The European Space Agency (ESA) operates a launching facility in the town of Kourou, French Guiana. French Guiana is an overseas territory of the nation of France, where the ESA is based. The Guiana Space Center is the primary launch site for the ESA's Ariane rocket family.

The Ariane 1 rocket was first launched on December 24, 1979. The first successful launch of the Ariane 5 occurred on October 21, 1998, following two failed attempts in 1996 and 1997. The Ariane series has so far only carried satellites into orbit. Perhaps a future Ariane rocket will one day carry humans as well.

Their targeted speed was 400 mph (644 kph). The Ack Attack had previously broken the motorcycle speed record in 2010 at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, achieving a max speed of 376 mph (605 kph). The attempt in Bolivia was unsuccessful, but the team has expressed their desire to try again in the future.

In 1984, Argentina opened the Embalse Nuclear Power Station near the city of Cordoba. Brazil is the only other country in South America to construct a nuclear power plant in the 20th century (Angra Nuclear Power Plant).

However, scientists have stated that due to the Earth's rotation, the planet bulges out at the equator. Because of this, Chimborazo has been declared the farthest point from the center of the Earth.

Houssay and Leloir had a working relationship at the University, with Houssay serving as sort of a mentor to Leloir.

The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation was established on May 25, 1900 as the Federal SeroTherapy Institute.

The desert location provides one of the best spots to observe the universe from within the Earth's atmosphere. The Paranal Observatory is one of several operated by the ESO (European Southern Observatory) in Chile. Paranal Observatory offers space available tours on the weekends, however tourists are required to provide their own transportation to the facility.
