Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The United States established their first 'Tomb of the Unknown Soldier' in this location in 1921 with the unidentified remains of a soldier killed in France in the Great War. It was redone as seen in the photo in 1931 and now includes tombs for World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. In which National Cemetery, located in Virginia, can this be found?

Answer: Arlington

The sarcophagus Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery has three carved Greek figures representing Peace, Victory, and Valor (visible portion) and has an inscription on the opposite that reads, "Here rests in honored glory an American soldier known but to God".

Additional soldiers' remains were interred beneath white marble slabs flush with the plaza for unknown American combatants from World War II, Korea and Vietnam. The Vietnam soldier, however, was later identified through DNA testing and removed from the crypt. It has since remained empty with the inscription, "Honoring and Keeping Faith with America's Missing Servicemen, 1958-1975".

Antietam National Cemetery is located in Sharpsburg, Maryland.
Gettysburg National Cemetery is located in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
Woodlawn National Cemetery is located in Elmira, New York.
2. 'La Tomba del Milite Ignoto' was established in 1921 at the Altare della Patria (Alter of the Fatherland) centered below the statue of Victor Emmanuel II. Immediately above the tomb is another statue, representing which goddess that personifies the city of Rome?

Answer: Roma

The body of the Italian unknown soldier was chosen by Maria Bergamas, who lost her own son in battle without being recovered. Over a million people attended the burial ceremony on November 4th, 1921 - the three-year anniversary of the end of (Italy's participation in) World War I. Victor Emmanuel III wrote the epitaph that is inscribed on the door of the internal crypt, which translates as "Unknown the name - its spirit dazzles - wherever Italy is - with a voice of tears and pride - they say - innumerable mothers: - it is my son".

The statue of the goddess Roma in its position predates the inclusion of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, but it is fitting that the goddess that represents Rome (and the greater Roman state and civilization) should stand guard over those who fought and died for Italy.
3. 'O Monumento Nacional aos Mortos da Segunda Guerra Mundial' was established in 1960 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with the repatriation of the remains of 463 servicemen of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force, who are entombed in a mausoleum beneath the statue seen here. From which country were they repatriated?

Answer: Italy

The Brazilian Expeditionary Force was mobilized to help fight the Italian Campaign, with more than 25,000 troops engaging German forces in 1944 and 1945. 464 men were buried in what became known as the Pistoia Brazilian war cemetery, located in Tuscany.

In 1960, almost all of them were repatriated and interred at the newly-constructed mausoleum and memorial in Rio, but one more body was found after the fact. The Brazilian government elected to allow that body to remain at the site, where it now occupies a 'Tomb of the Unknown Soldier' along with a monument marking the sacrifice that Brazilians made to liberate Italy.
4. 'Grób Nieznanego Żołnierza' is housed in the only remaining part of the destroyed Saxon Palace in Warsaw, Poland. The unknown soldier occupying the tomb was chosen from amongst those who fell in the 'Defense of Lwów' in 1918/19. What is the name of the modern-day city and country where the battle took place?

Answer: Lviv, Ukraine

At the time of the battle, Lwów (as called by the Polish) was part of the province of Galicia within Austria, following the dissolution of the Austria-Hungary (due to World War I, crop failures and economic crisis). With the reestablishment of Poland and the declaration of independence by the West Ukrainian People's Republic, there was much unrest and chaos. Within Austria, the city was called Lemberg, but the majority of its population were Polish.

In November of 1918, the city was attacked by the West Ukrainian People's Republic, with the conflict lasting six months before they were repelled (with the help of the Polish Army).

The memorial in Warsaw was established in 1923 (when the Saxon Palace still stood) and the tomb was added in 1925. Since then the tomb has had a continuous honour guard, with the exception of the time under German occupation during World War II.
5. 'La Tombe du Soldat Inconnu' in Paris can be found beneath another structure that was originally constructed to honour those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Which structure?

Answer: The Arc de Triomphe

L'arc de triomphe de l'Étoile (Triumphal Arch of the Star) was commissioned in 1806 after Emperor Napoleon's victory at Austerlitz. It was not completed at the time of Napoleon's defeat, and would not be finished until the mid-1830s during the reign of King Louis-Philippe (the last king of France).

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was added beneath the Arc de Triomphe on Armistice Day, 1920, honouring the fallen of World War I (and now also World War II). The 'eternal flame' established there was the first of the many that have been established around the world at similar memorials.
6. 'Могила невідомого солдата' (pronounced: 'Mohyla Nevidomoho Soldata') is a memorial within the Park of Eternal Glory. The tomb is at the foot of the monument with an accompanying eternal flame. Originally dedicated in 1957 to the memory of Red Army soldiers killed in World War II, it was rededicated in 1967 to the memory of fallen Ukrainian soldiers who gave their lives in the liberation of Ukraine. In which city, the Ukrainian capital, can it be found?

Answer: Kyiv

Unfortunately, this monument became a divisive element with the adoption of Ukrainian decommunization laws in 2015. Because the monument and tomb were originally dedicated to Red Army soldiers, it has been targeted for vandalism at times. On one occasion the memorial on the grave was destroyed, and at another time the eternal flame was snuffed with wet cement.
7. 'Μνημείο του Αγνώστου Στρατιώτη' (romanized: 'Mnimío tou Agnóstou Stratióti') is a cenotaph and sculpture memorializing the unknown soldiers who have died for Greece. Located in front of the Old Royal Palace in Athens, the empty tomb was originally dedicated for soldiers of the Peloponnesian War.

Answer: False

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Athens was actually established in 1932 for the fallen of World War I, as well as for the First and Second Balkan Wars (1912-13), the Russian Civil War (1917), and the Greco-Turkish War (1919-22). World War II names and locations were added later.

There are three Greek inscriptions around the sculpture translated here for you. Above the sculpture it says "To an unknown soldier", to the left is inscribed "There's one empty bier made up for the unidentified [fallen] ones", and to the right it says "The whole earth is the sepulchre of famous men". The two latter phrases are from Thucydides' "History of the Peloponnesian War".
8. 'Ang Libingan ng Hindi Kilalang Kawal' is the tomb shown in this picture found in the center of Libingan ng mga Bayani (The Heroes' Cemetery) in Manila, Philippines. The epitaph reads "Here lies a Filipino soldier whose name is known only to God". The cemetery and memorial were established in 1947 for Filipinos who were killed in which conflict?

Answer: World War II

The Heroes' Cemetery was established to provide a place of rest for the Filipino soldiers who died in the Philippine Campaign (1941-42) and the Allied Liberation of the Philippines (1944-45) during World War II. Originally named the Republic Memorial Cemetery, it was renamed by President Ramon Magsaysay in 1954 to the current 'Libingan ng mga Bayani'.

The three tall pillars behind the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier represent the three main island groups of the Philippines: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, and there are also a number of other, smaller pylons that have been added to memorialize later conflicts, including the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
9. 'Могила Неизвестного Солдата' (pronounced: 'Mogila Neizvestnogo Soldata') was unveiled in 1967 after the soldiers buried in a mass grave following the Battle of Moscow (1941) were moved to become part of this memorial. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier can be found in the Alexander Garden against the western wall of which Moscow landmark?

Answer: The Kremlin

The Shtyki Memorial, where the mass grave was located, can be found at the 40th km of the Leningrad highway at the city of Zelenograd. This was the closest that the Germans got to Moscow during 'The Great Patriotic War'. The remains were moved to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the battle by establishing a place of honour in Moscow proper.

Inscribed on the tomb and illuminated by the eternal flame are the words (translated from Russian): 'Your name is unknown, your deed is immortal'.
10. In my home country of Canada, the 'Canadian Tomb of the Unknown Soldier' was established in the year 2000, placed at the existing National War Memorial in Confederation Square in Ottawa. The unknown soldier was repatriated from France, where he had been interred near the site of Canada's 1917 'coming-of-age' battle during World War I. Which battle was it?

Answer: Vimy Ridge

The Battle of Vimy Ridge took place between April 9th and 12th, 1917, and involved the four divisions of the Canadian Corps deployed together for the first time. Where others had failed to capture the ridge in previous attempts, the Canadian contingent, under the command of General Arthur Currie, had a decisive victory over the German forces.

The original grave marker from France went to the Memorial Hall of the Canadian War Museum, where it was placed in such a way that on November 11th at 11 a.m., the light from the sun frames it perfectly.

The other three battles were from World War II
