Anton said:

... "Only two things kept me from turning this movie off. One was Amy Adams and the other was I knew how it ended and I wanted to see the cocky fatty fall on his face."

I know I will live to regret this, and surely it's this awful hour and the sub-zero temperature, but what on earth is a "cocky fatty?" And did he fall on his face? And was that a "feel good" moment for you?

I love Amy Adams, too, and she was adorable in "Junebug," another film I loved. I am definitely looking forward to watching Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence, (and Bradley Cooper -- are you seeing a pattern here? -- Jeremy Renner, and Christian Bale) in "American Hustle."

"I wanted to see the cocky fatty fall on his face..." -- nope, that line still has me baffled. Is this baseball slang I have somehow missed? If I see any "cocky fatties" coming at me, I'll be sure to either duck or grab my hockey stick. Guaranteed. It sounds like icing to me...

Blackdresss i think the reason why "The Call" with Halle Berry was so bad was it's made by the WWE & their movies are really bad except for "The Condemned" & "12 Rounds".

Very quick reply here,

Callie, I haven't seen either of those (Lovelace or ripd) but really did want to see Lovelace while it was out at the cinema. I'll have to catch it sometime. Had not heard of RIPD until you mentioned it but just looked it up at IMDB and it doesn't look inspiring although I do like Jeff Bridges so might give it a try.

I also wanted to see The Call, it was out in the states much earlier in the year and I think it got released over here late summer/September time probably due a good showing in the States. It looked better than the projects that WWE usually back and I still want to see it. Maybe WWE should concentrate on making their wrestling shows good again instead of funding movies... But that's another story.

And finally, isn't Anton referring to the player that gets offered the contract against Eastwood's characters better judgment who is embarrassed at he end? He could be described as 'fatty', and was certainly cocky.

The Butler (2013)

As Cecil Gaines serves eight presidents during his tenure as a butler at the White House, the civil rights movement, Vietnam, and other major events affect this man's life, family, and American society.

Starring
Forest Whitaker
Also starring
Oprah Winfrey
David Oyelowo
Cuba Gooding jr
Lenny Kravitz
Robin Williams
John Cusack
Liev Schrieber
Jane Fonda
Alan Rickman

Firstly I will not be addressing the social/political aspect that is central to this film and I don't want to see anyone hijacking this thread to argue about it. I will not talk about historical accuracy either so anyone that wants to try to spark any kind of controversial debate about any if that please take it elsewhere!

I quite enjoyed this film to a degree, I think much of the criticism is clouded by the point of view of the person watching. I think it helps me that not only am I a foreigner but I am also fairly ignorant of American history.

What I can comment on is the way the story is told and the performances involved. I liked the pace and the way the viewer is taken through the years. The central character is effectively neutral to everything that goes on around him. Some other reviews I read felt that this makes the audience feel less engaged in him as a character but considering the content and the storytelling bias the viewer is placed in the position of watching what he watches happen you don't need to.

At the heart of this movie is the relationship between Whitaker's father and Oyelowo's son. This story and the way the two interacted and played it proved to be what lifted this film for me. With a couple of electric scenes between the two and also touching scenes that are well played by both. In fact David Oyelowo is outstanding.

This is a ride full of ups and downs and was quite nicely played out but I just don't want to get into what I think about what this film is trying to say or achieve for the same reasons I have discouraged anyone from passing judgment in my opening. I guess that if you really want that from me you'll have to ask me via pm.

Monsters University (2013)

A look at the relationship between Mike and Sulley during their days at Monsters University -- when they weren't necessarily the best of friends.

Starring the voices of
Billy Crystal
John Goodman
Steve Buscemi
Helen Mirren

I really enjoyed Monsters Inc. and this was nearly as good. Simplistic underdog story with a little twist near the end. Great vocal talents from Goodman and Crystal.

A pretty good feel good animated showing!

The Shining (1980)

A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where an evil and spiritual presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from the past and of the future.

Starring
Jack Nicholson
Shelley Duvall

Directed by Stanley Kubrick

I suppose I'd better start by saying that this is far from my favourite genre... And that's probably an understatement.

I found this very dull. It's one of those iconic pieces of cinema and that picture of Nicholson peering through the door is a famous one. I'm not sure what I expected to see but I did not enjoy it or feel much for it whatever.

I should learn my lesson and stay away from horror no matter what the reputation of the film, the director or the writer if the source material I just don't enjoy it, find them dull, boring and all too often predictable.

On the upside, Duvall and Nicholson are good in this... Very small upside...

Nasty: The Call was a very good movie, IMO. I saw it earlier in the year. R.I.P.D. is different! Not the best movie but I really enjoyed Jeff Bridges in this movie! He was a hoot! It's worth watching. Cheers! :)

No Country For Old Men (2007)

Violence and mayhem ensue after a hunter stumbles upon a drug deal gone wrong and more than two million dollars in cash near the Rio Grande.

Starring
Tommy Lee Jones
Javier Bardem
Josh Brolin

Directed by the Coen brothers

Had never managed to see this until recently. On its original release the trailer failed to sell it to me so I didn't bother. Afterwards, when I realised others were raving about it I put it on my wish list but never caught it until it was on tv a few weeks ago.

This really is a good film, although not just in my opinion for the way it goes against cliche And expectation at practically every turn, it is well written, acted and directed. I say that because they tease a tremendous performance out of Tommy Lee Jones full of subtlety and nuance whilst distracting us with the violent antics of Bardems chilling character. Some of what we don't see on screen affects us as much as what is shown too.

Plenty if time is devoted to everything so that we have time to digest what's happened and really get into the minds of the characters. I loved this film.

Philomena

A world-weary political journalist picks up the story of a woman's search for her son, who was taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent.

Starring
Judi Dench
Steve Coogan

In moments I'd forgotten I was watching Judi Dench as she delivers an incredible performance. Steve Coogan impressed me with this understated turn too.

This is a fantastic film that I would recommend for anyone. Full of feeling and lovingly made, this is superb and in my top five for the year.

Don Jon (2013)

A New Jersey guy dedicated to his family, friends, and church, develops unrealistic expectations from watching porn and works to find happiness and intimacy with his potential true love.

Starring
Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Scarlett Johansson
Julianne Moore

Directorial debut from Gordon-Levitt.

This is a sharp, quick, energetic flick that hits all the notes that I expected from it given the trailer but also has a little more to it besides. I did not expect anything more than a shallow flick but it does have some thoughtful moments provided mainly by the excellent Julianne Moore.

The subject matter is interesting too, porn addiction is examined in a very entertaining manner but more importantly relationships are actually the focus and how they work.

Don't read too much into my analysis of course, this is still a very light hearted and comedic movie so anything it touches on is quite fundamental. I just didn't expect to be made to think by this film. Great debut for Gordon-Levitt who continually impresses me with everything he is in.

Just a quick note until I get caught up with all of these posts, but Callie, I didn't say "The Call" was a terrible movie! I said it was well done and it definitely had me in its grip in the first 30 seconds(or maybe 10 or 15 seconds.) The reason I would like to "un-see" it is because it scared the bahooties out of me, and while I love thrillers (but not horror films, other than a very small few -- "The Shining" is one I love,) I try not to intentionally scare myself, and that was one horrifically scary movie! I think it was on the same level as many, many episodes of "Dexter" over the years, before its awful final episode, having me and I'm sure millions of other fans wondering why they would waste my time and devotion over all those years, just to come up with a finale that felt and looked a lot like "And... I/we just ran out of ideas, so surprise! But not a good one! The End!"

I know this is a blog about movies, but TV series with horrible finales are always so disappointing, I just want to pull out my hair. "Seinfeld" went out with a whimper; so did "Dexter." And "Deadwood," one of the best TV series I have ever seen, just ended, abruptly, with no ending at all. I still can't believe the writers did that. "Deadwood" as a territory with no real "laws" until South Dakota became a State, was fascinating, that series was spot on with everything, right down to complex dialect, dirt under fingernails and skirts dragging in the mud when it rained and the dirt road turned to mud.

Oops... my short post just got long. Sorry! But I do love this thread and Nasty The Movie Critic!

Blackdress: When I mentioned "The Call", I was just commenting on the post Nasty made about wanting to see it but he hadn't yet. I was just telling him what I thought of the movie. I honestly didn't even see your post about the movie.

Really enjoying Deadwood, I'm watching it at the moment and am midway through season two. It's not the best for hooking the audience, you have to concentrate on what's going on. It doesn't really follow the standard rules of television storytelling but I love the grittyness and realistic feel. Also, Ian McShane is incredible as Al. I have the advantage of watching it years after the fact so I know it was cancelled abruptly and therefore will not be surprised to find no real ending. Doesn't really matter to me anyway.

Saving Mr. Banks was good, not that I had a choice about seeing it since Mary Poppins is my wife's childhood favourite (and adulthood come to mention it). Not so impressed with The Hobbit part 2, but I'll expand on that soon!
