I'd have to go with "Rear Window".

Rear Window, next on my list!

Tomorrow night hopefully!

Went to watch The Batman at the cinema last night. It’s good, I guess. But good in that, “good but I never want to watch it again” way.

I saw you mentioned "Sharpe's Rifles"--I'm quite a Sharpe fan myself. In a similar vein, I have to recommend A&E's "Hornblower" series.

I love Sharpe's series of films and also Bernard Cornwell's fantastic books. I recently did a rewatch of those from Rifles to Waterloo. You can find my thoughts on all of those on the site Letterboxd, my name on there is not nasty_liar though, it's Bernardpicard.

I've had Hornblower box set on my shelf for years but never got around to watching. A good friend of mine also loaned me Beat to Quarters book that I've never read yet! There's so many films to watch, series to watch and books to read and so little time!

Wednesday night a local cinema was showing Alien and Aliens, both director's cuts back to back for "Alien day".

I'd seen both movies before, once each, Alien in 2019 and Aliens in 2020. I had an appreciation for Alien, but I'd loved Aliens.

Watching Alien cinematically showed me that it is actually the better movie, in my opinion anyway, as it just longs to be watched in the dark on a big screen with all of the wide shots, slower artistic and atmospheric shots, sounds, score. The dialogue is less important but it provides this immense feel of dread for much of the runtime. It's a horror/sci fi. I'm holding it up in great esteem now.

Aliens, I enjoyed ever so slightly less this time. It's loud, faster paced, less subtle in approach but still very good. It's more of an action/sci if adventure. It does a great job, in a different way, of getting you well invested into the action and leads every character on some sort of arc or mini-arc. Tension is built and maintained all of the way through. Another great movie.

Anyone here watched "The Pianist", starring Adrien Brody? That is my favorite movie of all time. I even wrote a quiz about it.

Awesome Taltarzac, did you enjoy it?

I've seen The Pianist, great movie although very traumatic.

I watched it August 29th 2020. I thought the imagery could make you feel like you could have some understanding of what it was like to be there. The horror of the holocaust in all of its terror.

My complaint was how quickly the movie ran through szpilman's early life which, to me, wasn't well balanced with how long we spend alone with him later in the movie. But still, that's what got Brody the Oscar I guess.

Gripping and distressing.

Last movie I watched was Anna and the King from 1999.

Jodie Foster and Chow Yun-fat star. Chow Yun-fat is utterly brilliant in what I thought was a fairly bland story. The production is fantastic, I just wish they'd gone whole hog into trying to discuss some of the themes on offer like colonialism, modernisation versus traditionalism, race.

But it's fairly decent anyway and there are some fabulous scenes between the two stars.

I'll be looking out for other Chow Yun-fat movies now, think the only other film I've seen him in is Crouching Tiger...
