The Big Short (2015)

Interesting movie that depicts the financial crisis of the late 00's.

It's too run of the mill to be a great film but it's interesting nonetheless. Nice performance from Steve Carell as Mark Baum.

I thought "The Big Short" was completely disturbing.

But "When The Levee Breaks" by Led Zeppelin at the end was a great choice.

"When the levee breaks
Mama, you got to move"

I don't know if it's been reviewed yet, but "Interstellar" has been on quite a bit lately. I find the passage of time as shown, to be very interesting.

Oh, "Interstellar" is one of my favorite movies. I watch for it all the time. Thanks for the heads up, Mark. I just searched for it, and I can watch it right now! Or anytime this month, it looks like. And it's almost 3 hours? I didn't realize that.

Mark, Interstellar is reply #159. No apologies made for absolutely loving it but I have a definite thing for Christopher Nolan films. If any of you do too you might like to look up Honest Trailers on YouTube, they did one called 'every Christopher Nolan movie'.

The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017)

The world's top bodyguard gets a new client, a hit man who must testify at the International Criminal Court. They must put their differences aside and work together to make it to the trial on time.

Samuel L. Jackson
Ryan Reynolds
Salma Hayek, Gary Oldman plus a Richard E Grant cameo

Generic buddy movie. Nice chemistry between Reynolds and Jackson is the only reason this plays off quite well. It held my attention for the full run time. It past some time, I'll never watch it again... not sure why I bothered with it in the first place! But what's with all the big names in this thing!

One comment on watching Samuel L Jackson in an action flick like this... I don't find him believable running around shooting and fighting etc. He looks ridiculous! Someone writing this script also had serious fantasies about hearing him deliver one of his trademark (swearing/cursing) lines repeatedly!

Give it a miss unless you want to just chill out and watch something requiring low levels of concentration.

Sorry I missed that previous reply.

Speaking of hitman movies, what about "Columbiana?" That fits that genre, and I found it delightful and believable. Produced by Luc Besson. You might recognize a future Star Trekker.

Yeah I never saw Columbiana but I know it has what’s her name in it. I didn’t think it looked like much to be honest! But I might try it based on your recommendation.

Speaking of Christopher Nolan films, Nasty, have you watched "Memento?" I don't know if that was his first film, but I do think it's the film that launched his career.

That's one I watched all the way through. Then I sat there for a few minutes. And then I started the DVD again, and watched it all the way through a second time. And then I sat there for a few minutes. And then I watched it all the way through a third time, but this time, I took notes as I watched it, and ended up with, I think, 25 questions.

I used to ask people those 25 questions after they had watched the film once, to see if they caught all of what I caught. I have those notes somewhere. "Memento" is an amazing film. But whatever you do, do NOT watch it backwards! It will ruin the film for you, and with a DVD, you do have that option.

I've only watched a movie back-to-back-to-back one other time. The other film I did that with is called "Bliss" with Craig Sheffer, Terence Stamp and Sheryl Lee, and I took notes the third time when I watched that one, too.

I highly recommend both films.

I haven't seen memento yet, really want to.

I have seen The Prestige, Batman trilogy, Inception and Interstellar.

I have never to my recollection watched a movie for the first time and then watched it again immediately after. I've watched different movies back to back but never the same one.

Try back-to-back-to-back. I watched "Memento" three times, in a row, back-to-back-to-back.

I can't recommend it enough. It plays out backwards. His short-term memory is shot, so he can't remember anything longer than right around 15 minutes. And he's trying to solve the murder of his wife.

This is why you do NOT want to watch it backwards on DVD, which is honestly an option. Don't do it!

If you watch the film, I'll post my 20 or 25 questions from the film to see if you can answer them! As I recall, I'm not certain of the answer to all the questions, and I was really, really looking.

I've got this list packed away with everything else, but I'm sure it's in my office, and I could find it.

Pulp Fiction (1994)

Caught it from the start on tv last night and unfortunately that ended my other planned evening chores. Couldn't resist watching it again. Great movie, one of my favourites. It's not deep and meaningful, it's a few short stories linked together, but it is 3 hours (can't quite believe it's that long) that flies by watching fantastic scenes with great dialogue. How insanely referenced by popular culture is this movie? It is iconic.

On a smaller level, Travolta is brilliant in this movie.

All three of the aforementioned films are too violent for my old man brain. Give me the old films where they suggest that something very bad is going to happen to somebody and then apparently it does, but without showing it actually happening. We get to use our imagination,. which is a powerful thinking tool.

Isn't that what books are for? :) that's a little joke.

I do agree with you to some extent, but! I think that if filmmakers years ago had been able to they would have shot the stuff more explicitly. They were more heavily censored and there were taboos in terms of what could be shown. These were eventually broken down.

I think filmmakers could use more of a balance though yes. Having said that I just don't mind.

Caught Moneyball on tv last night, been wanting to see that for some time but unfortunately it started at 10pm and I was tired, I did not see all of it.

If I have read the book, then seen the movie, most of the time, the movie will pale in comparison to the book.

Absolutely, I’m the same.

Sometimes movies or tv do live up to the books though. Game of Thrones was a good example of where I was happy with the series. Even then, though, I suppose enjoyed the books more.

Watched "Moneyball" after I read the book, that was my mistake.
