I won't add anything more to this news except a solemn 'rest in peace'.

Back to movies.

Christopher Nolans Dunkirk

Very good. Not assessing its historical accuracy because I don’t know but the film is very good.

Oliver Stones Platoon

Who wasn’t starring in this? It’s quite a cast. Wow, very good also.

War is scary. Truly, and that’s just from watching pictures on a box... thankful for those that have and those that continue to put their lives on the line for their countries.

Tron

Early 80’s flick where the characters wind up inside the computer games. Marvellous look and feel to it but it’s all a bit lightweight. I might have enjoyed it as a kid. Interesting premise.

Nice to see a young Bruce Boxleitner though, loved him in my favourite TV series Babylon 5 in the 90’s.

If you enjoyed "Platoon," try "Full Metal Jacket" on for size.

I’ve seen Full Metal Jacket, also very good. I thought I’d seen Platoon prior to the other night but when it started I realised that I hadn’t.

What is your major malfunction!

Full Metal Jacket was on TV the other night so I had chance to remind myself of it.

Watched Goodfellas the other night. Does it rival The Godfather? Possibly not, possibly but it sure is an easy to watch mob movie. I love Ray Liotta's turn here, nice

I'm watching The Irishman, it's so long I've had to break it into chunks which isn't ideal... last part tonight!

Ah, my man Ray Liotta! Obviously, his big break was in Goodfellas. (Loved Joe Pesci in that one "Do I amuse you? Am I a clown to you?), but I had actually spotted the genius of Ray Liotta a few years earlier in "Something Wild" (worth seeing if you ever get a chance - very, very intense, like Goodfellas.)

His work in "Identity" also impressed me years later.

But his greatest work, in my tongue-in-cheek opinion, was as the voice of Tommy Vercetti (the central (and playable) character in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City)

Ah, playing Vice City to 100% completion with no cheats, no busteds, and no wasteds. Those were the days.

I must be too old, I missed those days.

I've never played any Grand Theft Auto of any sort and I'm younger than most FT members (big assumption there but I'd wager that I'm right).

Thanks for the Liotta tips, I'll look into them.

As for The Irishman. Not bad... but way too long. Not enough energy about it, nothing dynamic. Nice nuanced performance from De Niro though.

I saw Downsizing a little while back. What an interesting concept but I don't think they went deep enough with it. Still, enjoyable enough.

I also watched 'The Irishman'. Nothing special about it, even though it was De Niro's best performance in some time.

'Parasite', on the other hand, was very good.

I enjoyed "A Bronx Tale," it showed a different side of DeNiro.

The Terminal

Drawn in by the charm of Tom Hanks and held there with a combination of Spielberg and John Williams. A neat little movie. Watch out for a young Diego Luna and Zoe Saldana.

The Fugitive

I may have mentioned this before, but it’s an outstanding movie of its type. Great pace, keeps you interested throughout and Tommy Lee Jones is eating up every scene he is in.

Groundhog Day

Apologies if mentioning this before too, can’t be bothered checking. Great, great movie. Bill Murray is just perfect for this. What would you do? How would you keep sane? Brilliant stuff.

Manchester by the sea

I thought this was very good. It’s an exploration of grief and loss. I was gripped throughout. Casey Affleck is very strong and so is his young costar Lucas Hedges.

Witness

Smouldering Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis! Liked this a lot too!

So yeah, I’ve been watching quite a few movies!

Wayne’s World
Did not catch this first time around. All I can say is that this has not aged well, shockingly bad in my opinion.

Aliens
From the ridiculous to the sublime. Amazing movie, loved it. This is how to make an action movie.

Lost City of Z
Slightly underwhelming. Interesting stuff, I think this would make a better documentary than a dramatic piece but there are some good bits in there as the film meanders it’s way to the conclusion.

Man on the moon
I didn’t know Kaufman, maybe this is why it didn’t connect. Or maybe there’s something else not quite right here. Either way there are very interesting and entertaining scenes along the way.

As far as Man on the Moon went, it was pretty accurate. I did know Andy Kaufman, both from his appearances on Saturday Night Live and his character on Taxi, and Jim Carrey's portrayal of him was pretty good. And the two R.E.M. songs in the soundtrack ("Man On The Moon" and "The Great Beyond" were excellent). Andy Kaufman often appeared to be interested in doing things that *he* found funny, not the audience. So he managed to annoy a great number of people, including Lorne Michaels, who eventually barred him from SNL. It got to the point that people really couldn't tell if Andy was serious about something or just making a sick joke, which may have contributed to his early death from a rare lung cancer.

Yeah, it was interesting but by the end of the movie I just didn’t really care and that’s why I say it’s a miss. Still worth a watch though.

Frozen II is great, I like it more than the first one despite some bizarre conveniences I love the story and some of the messages. The animation and music is truly extraordinarily good too.

Sticking with Disney,
Bolt is a good flick. Very solid story that works well.

Incredibles II
pretty average.

Ghost Town
Charming film starring Ricky Gervais playing an incredibly grumpy dentist who starts to be able to see ghosts. Gervais is perfect for this role and the interest is kept throughout as proceedings continue along nicely. I recommend this.

Road House
I don’t recommend this. Trashy 80’s flick, starring Patrick Swayze, who plays a bouncer for a bar. Numerous bar fights. Cliched dialogue. Very poor offering.

Good to see The Terminal mentioned on here Nasty. Not exactly a groundbreaking film but one that I have watched a few times over the years as a great way to kill a few hours.

Jumanji: welcome to the jungle

Total fun flick with Dwayne The Rock Johnson and Jack Black. The Rock poking fun at himself and Jack Black playing a teenage girl inside a middle aged mans body. This movie takes full advantage of being inside a video game. Enjoyed it far more than I ever thought I would.

The place beyond the pines

Very interesting film told in three distinct parts. Exploring some different themes including guilt, ptsd, corruption and more. I think it tries for too much and suffers for it. I also think that the style, while keeping things interesting, ultimately detracts.

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Possibly the best action adventure movie ever made? It’s got to be close. Not a moment wasted, the cinematography, score, direction, editing, choice of actors and non stop action of the story combine to create this masterpiece. My favourite car chase from any movie features as does one of my favourite film openings ever. Modern action films could learn a lot here, action shot without the need for all those quick cuts that they use nowadays.

Lost In Translation
Beautiful film that describes how two lonely people in a different country connect with each other. Lovingly shot and unrushed with long shots across scenes with the head actors and sometimes across the landscape of Japanese cities. Bill Murray is masterful with his understated subtlety and he and Scarlett Johannson share seemingly endless longing stares and furtive glances. Great film.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Oh my. I loved this as a kid but was so disappointed when I excitedly put it on after loving Raiders so much at the weekend. It’s so average. Long scenes, unfunny attempts at humour. In fact the entire film seems to be playing for laughs that aren’t there to be had. Parts of Williams score sound very similar to parts of his Empire Strikes Back score which was distracting me. It is endlessly silly in that they seemed to want to try to put Indy in one preposterous position after another. Poor effort.

Thanks Jonno, I think the ultimate would be to watch it whilst waiting in an airport! That would be fun.

Mars Attacks

A Tim Burton offering that was both shocking and funny....in a sick sort of way :) I really did like it. Cheesy!

Down Periscope

If you need to laugh, this movie is one to laugh at. Kelsey Grammer is funny in this movie.

If you're wondering why I even mentioned these movies, it's because they are what they are....brain candy. Nothing serious, no social issue, nothing to learn, just stupid fun.
