Xmen: First Class (2011)

In 1962, the United States government enlists the help of Mutants with superhuman abilities to stop a malicious dictator who is determined to start World War III.

James Mcavoy
Michael Fassbender

Possibly the best Xmen movie? Really solid work, great interplay (and separate work) between McAvoy and Fassbender. I really enjoyed this movie even if it still managed to have that last third drag that superhero movies seem to have. You know, the bit where the action needs to take centre stage and it lives or dies on the set up.

I loved the prequel/reboot aspect here. Fresh performances of the same characters. Interesting story and some emotion.

Wish I'd watched it before Days of Future Past, but I think I'd be giving that movie too much credit by saying that. This one is my preferred watch anyway, although both are decent outings.

I liked X-men: First Class, also. One of the strengths of that film was the presence of the ubiquitous Kevin Bacon as the villain, Sebastian Shaw. (I think there should be a law requiring anyone who mentions Kevin Bacon in a movie to refer to him as *ubiquitous*.)

Of course, the whole science fiction time travel and alternate universe alternate timeline premise is intrinsically fascinating, but that's just me.

I grew up a DC comics kid, not a Marvel comics kid. Having said that, I will concede that, on balance with some individual exceptions, the Marvel comics movie adaptations have been superior to the DC comics movie adaptations. It's a shame, really. Green Lantern could've been a great movie character if in the right hands. The reboot of X-men has been managed well, I think, though I prefer Rebecca Romijn to Jennifer Laurence as Mystique.

Sorry, Jennifer Lawrence. Misspelling a person's name is grossly disrespectful, even when unintended.

Yes you are right about Kevin Bacon, I had intended but forgot to mention the ubiquitous Bacon.

Do you, or does anyone, plan to see Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem in the new Darren Aronofsky film, "Mother"? It's supposed to be terrifying.

I didn't like "Black Swan" the first time I watched it, so I watched it again. I'm still not sure I liked it, but it was creepily intense, I guess. Although I have no clue what that ending was about. At all.

Yeah… I can’t stand it when I’m trying to listen to what’s being said, and the music swells over the voice. I sit there and think, “If I wanted to hear music I’d watch a music video.”

Don’t see many movies these days anyway as I live on my own… have one DVD from years ago I didn’t even watch yet…

But, oh, that reminds me, my friend is a Buffy fan… so she brought the DVD and we watched some of those.

Prior to that, films I remember are “Prom Night” and “Secret Window” (only remember titles)

Have seen “The Perfect Storm” also (in one of those imax theaters).

Used to watch a lot of Disney movies on VHS… from Descriptive Video Service (which has an added bonus annoyance: talking over dialogue to describe something).

Nasty, you just have to come back in here and talk to us about movies!

Were you missing me on Christmas Day Elle?

I’ve watched some kids movies over Christmas.

“Up” was very enjoyable whilst tugging on my heartstrings due to the main character having lost his wife and is being pressured to take up residence in a home (this is a kids movie? You’re asking, well that’s really the background for the character and not the focus of the action but when your three year old is repeatedly asking, “but where has his lady gone?”, it was getting to me!

My wife got our daughter “the Little Mermaid” for Christmas. I thought that one was utter drivel. The plot involves the princess mermaid having three days to get the prince on land to kiss her, pathetic! Luckily daughter number one may be a chip off the old block and didn’t like it either.

“Brave” was also watched but I found this one more difficult to explain to a three year old. It’s set in the old highlands of Scotland involving clans and such. The leaders daughter is expected to marry the son of another clan but she likes to use bows and arrows, sword fight, go exploring and wants to choose her own destiny. Nice idea maybe but badly executed in my opinion.

I’ve watched a number of the Harry Potter movies over Christmas, they are mildly entertaining. I think the Goblet of Fire is my favourite, the plot builds up quite nicely to the finale.

I also saw one of my favourite movies, A Few Good Men. Not sure whether I’ve talked about that before without scrolling back. “You can’t handle the truth!”

Nasty, I was missing you terribly on Christmas Day!

I'm trying to remember the last Disney movie I watched. I haven't liked them in awhile. I'm a "Sleeping Beauty" fan, though. And I liked "Beauty And The Beast," both on film and on stage. That stage production is amazing.

Disney has been making so many movies lately that look kind of wonky just in the trailers, but that may just be me. I remember my friend taking her little girl to see "Frozen" in the theater, and it scared the heck out of her!

Tell us more, tell us more!

Well we have Frozen, my girls have already watched that about a million times and therefore so have I. I do actually like it a lot and I really like the songs on that one.

I never watched much Disney as a kid. I saw Jungle Book and liked that one, I saw Beauty and the Beast and from what I recall I enjoyed it.

Home Alone was just on, that's lame...

Not a big fan of Disney, myself, but will echo your sentiments on A Few Good Men. An excellent movie, made even better by the presence of Jack Nicholson. Certainly "You can't handle the truth!" is one of the most famous lines in cinematic history. I love Nicholson's lines.

"Here's Johnny!" - The Shining

"This town needs an en*** " - Batman

A Few Good Men is one of the few films that I will deliberately take out the DVD and rewatch it at least once a year probably more. It is almost perfect to me from first scene to last. As you say, Nicholson really puts the cherry on the icing on the cake.

I'm pretty sure "You can't handle the truth!" and "Hereeeee's Johnny!" were both ad-libbed by Nicholson, making them even better!

Imagine how terrifying that must have been for poor Shelly Duval and how shocking for Tom Cruise and Demi Moore! And everyone else...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

First thoughts... pretty good. Liked everything involving Luke, Rey and Kylo. Some aspects reminded me of the expanded universe novels (pre-Disney), which is nice. On the downside I think 155 minutes is just too long for a StarWars movie, don't they bother editing anymore? More is not always better.

Liked it though, looking forward to the next one!

"A Few Good Men" now a classic, right up there with "12 Angry Men" for courtroom dramas. I love a good movie, just found this thread.

Also saw The Last Jedi. Thought it was a little better than The Force Awakens. Seeing Laura Dern (who I remember best for her role as Dr. Sadler the paleobotanist in the original Jurassic Park) with purple hair was a bit unnerving for me. Never really understood who Supreme Leader Snoke was and how he got in the position he had. Seemed a pale imitation of Emperor Palpatine to me without much of a backstory. But I thought the "Force Astral Projection" was an interesting new twist. The Casino was nice. Wonder what their closest thing to blackjack would be like.

Sorry, Dr. Sattler. The original Twelve Angry Men with Henry Fonda is indeed a classic. I have seen it, of course, but it came out originally long before I was born. I think I've learned a lot by watching old movies from the 30s, 40s, and 50s. Many of them far exceeded the quality of today's movies, which are too devoted to snappy one-liners and special effects and not enough to characterization.

I refrain from any criticism of Snoke's backstory. If you watch the original trilogy there is very little exposition to cover Emperor Palpatine's backstory either but it still works. That's not to say I was enamoured with Snoke but I won't yes that particular criticism.

Part of me really wanted to see Ewan Mcgregor appear to Luke as Obi-Wan's force ghost and then Luke say, "who the hell are you?". *snicker snicker*
