Ha! Now that I think about it, isn't it the same as the first rule?
We should start up a fight club right here in FT land! :-)

Here's one that is pretty mind-blowing to think about that can't possibly have a correct answer. How many total characters did the Cartwrights, the Barkleys, the Rifleman and Matt Dillion kill? Can you imagine the death toll on that one? All of them killed people in practically every episode!

Just imagine how many people the Rifleman killed right in front of his kid - and the kid still turns out just as normal as can be. Yeah, right!

How about all those old westerns.
Bat Masterson
Cheyenne
Branded
Have Gun - Will Travel
Laramie
Laredo
The Virginian
The Lone Ranger
Wyatt Earp
and all the rest.

How did we ever come out of it all being normal? Maybe we didn't?

My favorite Westerns are more recent: Tombstone and Unforgiven

I enjoyed Unforgiven, with Little Bill and English Bob.

Yeah, as far as recent western movies go, Tombstone and Unforgiven are shining stars, but don't forget about both of the Young Guns films. How often is a sequel every bit as good as the original? In this particular case, in my opinion, both films were equally outstanding.

Of course, let's not forget about TV movies like Lonesome Dove and Open Range, and did any of you guys watch all of the Hell on Wheels series? This was a fictional show but based on real people and real events. Excellent series.

I wish they would come out with a western called "Bang! Bang! I Got You!" My life would be complete! :-p

I think that "Tombstone" was not a favorite of mine because that entire premise had been done so many times before. In my opinion nothing tops "Gunfight at the O.K.Corral" with Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas.
Young Guns was a bunch of young stars that were after my time, different generation.
I really enjoyed "Open Range" with Kevin Costner, Robert Duvall, and Annette Bening. I give it **** stars.

Actually, I did like the original Gunfight at the OK Corral. Besides Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas, that movie also starred DeForest Kelley (later famous for Dr. McCoy on Star Trek). But what made Tombstone for me was Val Kilmer's performance of the tubercular Doc Holliday.

"I'll be your huckleberry." Val Kilmer stole that movie.

Yeah, Justified was excellent. Didn't miss a single one of those. Ol' Raylan Givens and Boyd Crowder.

Talking about awesome westerns, do you guys remember Once Upon a Time in the West with Henry Fonda and Charles Bronson? One of my favorite western movies of all time and literally my favorite Sergio Leone film. I know the films he did with Clint Eastwood were probably a lot more popular, and I do enjoy those films very much, but West has just always been my favorite from that guy for some reason.

I have always been a little different than most people in that regard. It's just like my favorite John Wayne film. Most guys who are John Wayne fans would probably say their favorite was one of his great war films like The Green Berets or maybe The Fighting Seabees or The Alamo, or maybe one of his big bad lawmen roles like in True Grit or Cahill, U.S. Marshal, but of all the films that guy did, my favorite one is The Sons of Katie Elder. I don't know what it is about that film but it really is my favorite Duke movie.

The "Sons of Katie Elder" is in my Top 5 John Wayne movies, but so is "Rio Bravo," also his last The "Shootist."
I'd take a John Wayne and Clint Eastwood movie marathon any time.

Val Kilmer was outstanding in Tombstone. He has a casual way about him when acting, that I enjoy. I would like to see him attempt some of the roles Daniel Day Lewis has tackled, to see if it is acting ability, or the roles that Kilmer chooses.

Regarding Clint Eastwood, I have seen the spaghetti Westerns and do have an appreciation for his Man with No Name character, but, perhaps because I am too young to have been a movie watcher in the 1960s, I like his later work better. I think it is more subtle and nuanced. I had already mentioned Unforgiven. This movie benefits from what I consider an amazing turn by Gene Hackman as the villain.

But I also admire The Outlaw Josey Wales and Pale Rider. Clint's largely silent characters which gradually build up to a big, violent climax are fun to watch.
