The Italian Market is an open-air shopping area in South Philly where you can buy everything from produce to clothes. And if you're Rocky Balboa, someone is bound to toss you some fruit as you jog by.

"Schuylkill" is the name of a major river AND expressway through Philadelphia and yet even most native Philadelphians will struggle to spell it right. That's why I always gave directions using I-95, as it is far easier to spell.

America's oldest public library might not be in Philly, but you don't have to go far to find it. America's oldest public library, in continuous service since 1743, is in nearby Darby, PA.

There is no 14th street in Philadelphia. Broad Street is located between 13th and 15 streets. Oddly, you'd think they'd have superstitiously skipped 13th Street. The 1400 block of any east-west street starts at Broad Street and goes up to 15th Street.

On November 28, 1951, John F. O'Hara was annointed the fifth archbishop, of Philadelphia. He is the one for whom Cardinal O'Hara High School is named. John Joseph Krol followed him on March 22, 1961. The present spiritual leader for catholics is Cardinal Bevilacqua.

Wawa gets its unusual name from the dairy which intially supplied its products which is in the town of Wawa, Pennsylvania. Wawa is a native American name. AM-PM minimarkets have more outlets but (not counting gasoline) Wawa outsells them in volume.

"Joe's Beer" was the slogan for three generations of the family brewed Ortleib's beer until the label was sold in 1980 to Heileman's, which ended the last of Phily's 40-family run breweries. A descendent of the Ortlieb clan did open one of Philly's many and popular micro-breweries in the 1990s.

While older brother Frank had rose through the ranks to become police commissioner (before becoming mayor), Joe climbed a different ladder (literally) in the fire department.
