Natural cats are those that have developed without human intervention. Landrace cats are a subset of these and have a connection to a particular geographical region, adapting to the conditions found there. The Turkish Van is one such landrace breed. The founding stock came from various Turkish cities although the breed was developed in Britain, initially from two kittens donated in 1955. The breed gets its name from its colouring, ideally being chalk-white apart from head and tail markings and is not to be confused with the Van cat which comes from around Lake Van in Turkey and is typically all-white.
The Korat is a natural breed that has been stable for centuries. It comes from Phimai in Thailand. It is a short-haired breed of silver-tipped blue-grey colouring with large green eyes, a heart-shaped head and unusual vocals. They first came to Britain as Blue Siamese towards the end of the 19th century, and to the US in the 1950s.
Recently renamed from Wichien Maat (Thai for 'diamond gold'), the Thai cat is an old natural breed. An alternative name, Applehead, is a reference to the shape of its head. Sharing its ancestry with the Siamese, both breeds were developed after the Second World War with the stylised modern Siamese having a longer, slimmer body with large ears on a wedge-shaped head. The Thai is closer to the traditional, ancient type of Siamese.
One of the few spotted breeds, the Egyptian Mau has tabby markings on its forehead, likened to a scarab design. It is also the fastest domestic cat, with long hind legs and flaps of skin from the back knees which allow for an extended stride. Unlike regular cat breeds with a gestation period of 64-67 days, the Egyptian Mau's is around 73 days.
The Bengal cat is a hybrid, bred initially by cross-breeding the Asian leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) with domestic cats such as the Egyptian Mau. Any offspring is then further cross-bred with a domestic cat to give the next generation a friendlier disposition. The objective of this hybridisation is a spotted coat. This may take the form of spots, rosettes, arrowheads or marbling, for example.
A French cat with a reputation for being a good hunter, the Chartreux has a blue/silver-grey short-haired double coat, a muscular build and relatively-short limbs. Being a French pedigree breed, the initial letter of the cat's official name indicates its year of birth. The code uses 20 letters from the alphabet and changes each year in rotation.
More formally called the Siberian Forest cat, the Siberian is a landrace breed that has been evolving in the Russian wilds for centuries. A long-haired cat, it is not related to similar breeds like the Maine Coon, however the harsh conditions found in Siberia has led to the co-evolution of this trait. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and related political changes led to breeding programmes in the West. The Neva Masquerade is a variant or sister breed with the colourpoint gene.
A dominant genetic mutation is behind the Scottish fold breed. The mutation affects cartilage and bones, causing the characteristic ears which fold forwards and down to the front of the head. The mutation also causes various health problems including degenerative joint diseases. As a result, a number of countries prohibit the breeding of these cats. Some cat registries decline to recognise the breed.
Another mutation has given rise to the Cornish Rex breed. Most cats have three types of hair in their coats: very fine 'down hair' against the skin, the 'awn hair' in the middle, and 'guard hair' as the outer fur. The Cornish Rex only has down hair, which is naturally curly on this breed. The breed is best suited for the warmth and dry conditions of indoor living. The breed stems from a male kitten born to a litter on a farm in Cornwall, UK in the 1950s.
The Manx cat from the Isle of Man is best known for being a tail-less cat. Many Manx cats do in fact have a small stub of a tail. A genetic mutation is the cause but it is not clear where the founding tail-less cat came from. A ship-wrecked cat is one theory. They have been known to be on the island from at least the early 19th century. A small feline population and geographic isolation led to the tail-less variety becoming established. The Cymric cat from Canada is a long-haired variant and is considered by some as a separate breed.
The cat breeds in this quiz were hiding amongst various dog breeds with the six dog breeds providing the wrong answers.
