Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In order for her to go to the funfair, what condition does Shauna's mum set down first?

Answer: She has to take little brother Humphrey

Shauna has to take her toddler half-brother Humphrey along with her, even though she's afraid that people are going to think that he's her son and call her 'pram face' (for non-Northern English people, that's an unpleasant name for underage working class mothers). Probably not a credible fear as Shauna is only 12.
Shauna is the brains of the group so she probably does her homework anyway. Dan has a soft spot for his partner's daughter so would probably be up for taking her, but Shauna's a teenager now, so no. As for the dog, well, read on...
2. What does Mildred blow twelve quid trying to win at the funfair?

Answer: The Magic Pencil

Kiss the Strongman? Boys are EWWW. (She is only 12, after all.) The Hillbilly Simulator currently only exists in the mind of one of the carneys, which is probably for the best. Mildred has been brought up in a strict vegan household so gets palpitations at the very thought of chocolate, but beyond even that, it's the magic pencil that has drawn (ahem) her eye. How is it magic? We'll find out later.
3. Back in the classroom next day, what animal does Mildred draw with the enchanted pencil, hoping to summon up a new pet?

Answer: Dog

Shauna and Lottie both draw something that looks a bit like a dog and Mildred draws a dog head; this will have consequences later, have no doubt.
4. What is the name of the troglodyte who is bullying Jack?

Answer: Benny Lynch

Benny Lynch...older, heavier, stupider and uglier than Jack. Nice to see a bully going for a hard target for a change. No reason is given for his antipathy to Jack, but the Lynches of this world don't usually need one.
Jack's sister Laura doesn't like the situation. If anyone bullies Jack, it's going to be her.
5. While putting out the recycling one night, Mildred encounters a dog. Something doggish at the very least. After a while, Neil and Glenys, her parents, agree to let Mildred take him (?) in. What name is he given?

Answer: Archibald

Looking remarkably like the picture of a dog that Mildred drew with the magic pencil, his name is Archibald, or Archie for short. Doesn't look much like a dog, no snout for starters, and we later find that Glenys found him drinking from a cup, sat up like a person, so we can probably add opposed thumbs to the mix.

It isn't a surprise when Glenys gives Archie away, but at least it's to Dan, Shauna's mum's partner, so at least he hasn't gone far.
6. We find out early in the story that something has been taking toddlers from around Tackleford, and Linton has decided it's probably Archie, despite a lot of evidence to the contrary. In the end, the kids decided to set up a trap for the predator. What do they use as bait?

Answer: A dummy disguised as Sonny's little sister

Of course they don't use Sonny's toddler sister! They aren't savages!
They do use some of her clothes in a baby shaped dummy though, which, while they watch in the woods, attracts a hairy beast that consumes the dummy entirely, leaving only a few biodegradable scraps.
They didn't leave birdseed because they're not Wile E Coyote, nor a tethered guinea pig because they're just not that sort of children. Linton's dislike of Archie is hard to understand, especially when he saves Linton from drowning when Linton falls in the river during the kids' search for the beast.
7. Pictures of the 'Tackleford Beast' bring a South African big game hunter to the school to give a talk on animal hunting and conservation . What is this gentleman's name?

Answer: Jesper Bloem

Jesper Bloem, who makes the salient point that if animals go extinct, he can't hunt them down any more. A bit of a mixed message there, I think.
Bloem keeps a private animal collection close to Tackleford and at the assembly correctly identifies the Tackleford Beast as a Cheroonear, an Australian Outback predator, and tells the assembled school that he's going to track it down.
After the presentation, Shauna shows him a picture of Archie on her mobile phone. Despite Bloem's claims, that is not 'bombus bombus, the common dog'.
8. Archie is stolen from Dan's van while Shauna sleeps! Joining the dots, she and Lottie decide to infiltrate Bloem's private zoo and set him free. Which one of the two presses the emergency door release marked 'Maximum Danger! Opens all cages!'?

Answer: Lottie

As if you needed to ask.
Bloem's zoo seems to have collected all the world's dangerous cryptids, including a chicken-headed predator that I found proper nightmare fuel. Hijinks ensue but Archie makes his escape. This is unfortunately more than we can say for the girls...
9. The girls are trapped against a high wall by the Cheroonear! What saves them in the nick of time?

Answer: A giant Japanese robot dog head

It was a giant, floating, Japanese-speaking robot bulldog head, as drawn with the magic pencil by Mildred, that zapped the Cheroonear. Seems like the pencil really was magic after all.
Bloem is too busy having fun recapturing his collection, and Dan obviously wasn't there.
Archie is found sat against the wall, taking care of Lottie's pet dog, Pepper. He's a good boy.
10. Finally, after the adventure, it's all out in the open - Archie is NOT a dog. What is he?

Answer: A juvenile Wendigo

He was a Wendigo all along, as we find out when an animal expert from the RSPCA called. Regular readers of the 'Tackleverse' stories will remember another, far less cute, member of the Wendigo family appearing when the last generation of kids went on a school trip in France (See 'Scarygoround', 'The Bell').
Shauna's description of Wendigos from her essay:
'Archie was actually a Wendigo. That is a sort of mad Canadian wolf-boy. They grow eight feet tall with teeth like pins so we could not keep him. He had been imported illegally. Wendigos are very rare! I was very sad when we had to say goodbye to him but he is better off in his natural habitat...the Canadian tundra. There he can hunt yaks and live with his own kind'.
