Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This famous pirate had an alias of "Jack of the Baltic". He was from Copenhagen, Denmark. Do you know who this pirate was?

Answer: John Derdrake

John Derdrake had the alias of "Jack of the Baltic". When his parents died he was left a small fortune and built a sailing brig. He traded wood between Norway and London but grew impatient with the very small profits. Peter the Great ended up buying John Derdrake's ship and appointed Derdrake as the master shipwright of the royal dockyards. Well, Derdrake being a man of violent temper, slew one of his superiors with an axe and rushed onto his ship and set sail with the cargo which he sold in London. He was a man on the run. In his adventures he defeated a Russian ship, renaming the ship Sudden Death. It was well-armed and he used this ship in ambushes against English and Russian ships which were carrying goods to Peter the Great. He and his band of pirates stole many valuable things which he sold in Sweden. When he had prisoners, he drowned them. In other words, "Dead men tell no tales." He actually did make his victims "walk the plank".
General Shevelling of St. Petersburg, heard of these horrors and offered a reward for the head of Derdrake. Derdrake's pirates heard of this as they took a Russian ship that was headed for Cronstadt. On this ship was the sister of General Shevelling and she was stabbed to death by Derdrake. Eventually the Governor heard this terrible news and that the guilty pirates could be found in Strothing, Sweden.
The Sudden Death was found anchored and a battle erupted with two well-armed ships sent by Governor Shevelling against the Sudden Death. The Sudden Death lost and was sunk.
Derdrake was on shore at the time of the battle and escaped, but most of his crew were killed. Derdrake, with his wealth from piracy sales, bought an estate near Stralsund, Germany and lived there for fourteen years until he decided to travel to Stockholm, Sweden. He was recognized by the captain of a ship from Sweden, was arrested, tried and hanged.

Question by cyberhen.
3. In 1985, Garfield the cat starred in "Garfield's Halloween Adventure". Did Garfield and Odie dress up as pirates for Halloween?

Answer: Yes

Although Garfield and Odie sorted through numerous different costumes in Jon's attic, the duo settled on two pirate costumes. Garfield's, a unique ensemble, included a sword and a peg leg while his first mate, Odie, initially had a costume with four peg legs. Garfield, who changed his name to Orangebeard for the occasion, knocked them off before they left to go trick-or-treating.
When the duo came to a dock in town, they took a boat upriver to a spooky old house on an island where they were told by an old man that pirates would be returning on that night, 100 years from the night they left, to retrieve their forgotten treasure. Garfield and Odie were forced to stay, and were shocked to discover real pirate ghosts on Halloween night.

"Garfield's Halloween Adventure", also known as "Garfield in Disguise" first aired in 1985, and it won the Emmy for Best Animated Program in 1986. It was also released in a book adaptation shortly thereafter.

4. On which famous pirate ship would you have expected to find Captain Flint?

Answer: The Hispaniola

Question by helenat.
5. Bill Johnson, a renegade Canadian in the early 19th century was a celebrated pirate on what waters?

Answer: St. Lawrence River around the Thousand Islands

Bill Johnson pillaged farms, stole and burned British ships, shot off men's fingers, and got his booty. He was born in Trois Rivieres, Quebec, raised near Kingston Ontario, but sympathized with the Yankees during the War of 1812. During his years of pillaging and piracy, he easily evaded capture in the Thousand Islands of the St. Lawrence River he knew so well, and when he was captured, he often managed to escape. Even while in prison in the US in 1939, he was seen at a play in his honour, "Bill Johnson, The Hero of the Lakes". Two novels from the 1850s romanticize his piracy in the St. Lawrence, and the Ontario government erected a plaque in his honour 120 years after he hijacked and burned the British passenger steamer, the Sir Robert Peel.

Question by Cher40.
6. In the "Asterix" and "Obelix" comic books, what notably happened every time the pirates encounter a ship with Aterix and Obelix onboard?

Answer: The pirates' ship was destroyed by Obelix, and they are left to sink.

The "Asterix" and "Obelix" books are French comic books written by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo about a village of ancient Gauls who managed to resist Roman occupation. This was because their druid, Getafix, had brewed a special potion which gave them superhuman strength. Obelix fell into the cauldron of potion when he was a boy, and this became a running joke throughout the books, as he was never allowed any extra potion.
Of course the pirates wouldn't have been able to force Asterix and Obelix to walk the plank, and they wouldn't have been able to kidnap Asterix. Whilst Obelix' favourite food was roasted wild boar - he would much rather have sunk the pirate ship.

7. In the video game "Kingdom Hearts 2", you must travel to a world involving pirates. During the second part, you must capture "Nobodies" because they have stolen what?

Answer: Aztec Gold

You first land in Port Royal in this level. Port Royal is from the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean". The first part of the level, you try to save Jack Sparrow's ship, The Black Pearl. You must defeat Barbossa to win the Black Pearl back. Also, by defeating Barbossa, you are able to fix the curse of the Aztec gold. However, during the second part, Nobodies steal the gold, and you must re-take the gold to reverse the curse again. The Nobodies you capture are scattered throughout the level, so you must travel everywhere to find them. Once you find all four pieces of gold they have stolen, you come across a very difficult boss that you must fight. The boss constantly steals gold, making him impossible to beat, so you must continue to use magic on him to make him drop the gold. You have to pick up the gold and put it back in the chest. Once all 800 pieces are in the chest, you can attack the creature and try to defeat him.

15. What was the preferred or most common method of execution/punishment among pirates in the 17th and 18th centuries?

Answer: Lashing

Sorry to disappoint you, but walking the plank was not a method commonly used by pirates. There is no historical evidence suggesting that this method was used, other than rarely and usually only to obtain information from someone. It is largely a Hollywood myth.
If an offending pirate was lucky, his captain would have him executed by gunshot, but more often he would receive 39 lashes of the whip, which would deeply split the skin. After the lashing, salt water would be poured over the the wounds, which often led to gangrene and finally death. It was a very slow, painful way to die.
Keelhauling was seldom used, but it was a very cruel punishment. A pirate would be thrown overboard, looped to the bottom of the ship and dragged under the ship's keel. This would result in lacerations from barnacles and other marine growth.
Another common method of execution was simply to throw the offender overboard. These practices were not exclusively used by pirates, but also by the navies of various countries.
