The Canadian city of Thunder Bay in north-western Ontario is on the north shore of Lake Superior. It was formed in 1970 through the merger of the cities of Fort William and Port Arthur along with several townships. It takes its name after the bay of the same name on the northern shore of Lake Superior. The American city of Duluth, Minnesota is located at the western end of Lake Superior. Duluth - along with Superior, Wisconsin - forms a metropolitan area known as Twin Ports, one of the larger ports in the US. Duluth is 3,700 km (2,300 mi) from the Atlantic Ocean and one of the furthest inland ports accessible to ocean-going ships.
The Canadian city of Sarnia in the province of Ontario is the largest city on Lake Huron, located at its most southerly point. It is on the eastern bank of the St Clair River which forms part of the border between Canada and USA. The US city of Alpena, Michigan is the second-largest US city (after Port Huron) on Lake Huron. It is located at the head of Lake Huron's Thunder Bay. The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve lies offshore from Alpena. There are an estimated 116 shipwrecks within this area.
The US city of Cleveland, Ohio sits on the south shore of Lake Erie. It is the second most-populated city in the state after Columbus, the state capital. The St. Lawrence Seaway connects the city to the Atlantic Ocean. Two states further east in New York, the US city of Buffalo is also located on the shore of Lake Erie. It is at the eastern end of Lake Erie at the head of the Niagara River which forms part of the Canadian-USA border. Two other US states, Michigan and Pennsylvania, are bounded by Lake Erie.
The Canadian city of Hamilton in the province of Ontario is a port city at the western end of Lake Ontario. It is at the centre of the Golden Horseshoe, the most densely populated and industrialised region of Canada. The Golden Horseshoe starts at Niagara Falls and bends around the western end of Lake Ontario taking in Toronto, the capital city of the province (also bordering Lake Ontario), and ending in Clarington, Ontario. Also in the province is the Canadian city of Kingston at the eastern end of Lake Ontario. Kingston sits at the beginning of the St Lawrence River and at the mouth of the Cataraqui River, which forms the lower portion of the Rideau Canal. It is nicknamed "Limestone City' after the material used to construct many of what-are-now heritage buildings.
The US city of Chicago is the largest city in the US state of Illinois but not the state capital, which is Springfield. Chicago sits on the western shore of Lake Michigan and was founded near the historic portage route linking the Great Lakes with the Mississippi River. The US city of Milwaukee is north of Chicago on the western shore of Lake Michigan. Milwaukee is the largest city in the US state of Wisconsin (Madison is the capital) and sits at the confluence of the Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnickinnic rivers.
