Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the game of "UNO", perhaps one of the most frustrating experiences is the "Skip" card, which if played immediately before your turn, prevents you from playing any cards. In older versions, the card had a giant "S" as the symbol for skip. What did subsequent versions use?

Answer: A circle with a line through the middle

The Reverse card is represented by two opposing arrows, but previously had an "R". While one might feel like frowning when one is skipped in the game, the Skip card is depicted with a circle with a line through the middle. The Draw Two card now has two cards in its depiction, where previously it was a "D".
2. "Go To Jail" is the version of turn-skipping in the game of "Monopoly" as you are not able to continue moving on the board until you escape the slammer. Which of the following methods is NOT a way to get out of jail?

Answer: Forfeiting property

While in jail, a player may not move around the board, but they may still complete transactions such as trading and collecting property fees. Forfeiting property is not a way in which one may get out of jail; however, one may mortgage a property and use the newly-obtained money to pay the $50 fine.
3. There are many ways to play the card game "President" (also known as "Scum"), but all of them include the basic premise of players playing cards in order of rank from lowest to highest. One of the most common variants skips the next player in succession when you complete what action?

Answer: Play a card(s) the same rank as the previous player

A game often played in universities, the winner of a round of "President" becomes the "president" and gets to exchange bad cards with the lowest player, often called the "scum". In many variants, if a player plays a card of the same value or rank as the previous player, the next player is denied a chance to play because they are skipped! Very frustrating!
4. When playing chess, it is possible to skip the opposing player's turn by a technical move known as "castling".

Answer: False

There is no possibility of skipping when playing chess. The players must always make a move every turn. This can result in what is known as "zugzwang", where a player is forced to move, even though it would put them at a disadvantage. This kind of movement typically happens near the end of the game when there are few pieces on the board.

"Castling" is a technical move in chess, though it does not involve skipping one's turn in any sense. When a player castles, they are moving their king and rook in one fell swoop. The king moves two spaces toward the rook, and the rook takes the place of the space which the king crossed. There are three conditions that must be met before one can castle:

1) Neither the king nor the rook can have been moved previous to the castle. (Therefore, one can only castle once per game!)

2) There cannot be any pieces in between the king and the rook.

3) The king cannot castle into a check.

I always have trouble remembering how to castle when playing, so generally I avoid the move. However, perhaps reading this info has helped you remember for the next time!
5. In newer editions of "Candy Land", Lord Licorice leaves his sticky licorice on various spaces for players to get stuck on and lose a turn. In the 1984 edition of the game, various environmental factors are the cause of one's woe. Which of the following did NOT cause one to lose a turn in the 1984 edition of "Candy Land"?

Answer: Visiting Gramma Nutt

Of course, one may feel as though they are stuck visiting their grandmother, but Gramma Nutt may argue otherwise. Being stuck in the Gooey Gumdrops forces you to draw another yellow card; getting lost in those Lollipop Woods requires you to draw a blue; sticking yourself in the Molasses Swamp so close to the end can be frustrating, but if you draw another red, you are free to move on.
6. In what four-player card game would one "go alone" with an exceptionally good hand, essentially forcing their partner to discard all their cards and skip playing the round?

Answer: Euchre

Somewhat rare while playing Euchre, "going alone" should only be done with an excellent hand filled with trump cards and often aces. Some aggressive players may try to go alone often, but such aggressive play isn't always to the player's advantage, as they forfeit the opportunity of a second player taking tricks.

"Going alone" is usually a happy event in Euchre for the player that is not allowed to play. It means their partner has a terrific hand! (Usually!)
7. When playing which board game would you lose a turn when you "Cram for exams", become "Lost!" and get a "Flat tire"?

Answer: The Game of LIFE

Losing a turn in "The Game of LIFE" does not really threaten one's fortunes much in the game as the winner is not the first to reach the end. It is little more than an annoyance in most players' minds.

Spaces which can hurt a player's fortunes more include having to pay fees, losing stocks, or being forced to switch salary cards with a player that has a lower salary.
8. When playing the children's game hopscotch, which of the following situations would successfully result in not having to skip the rest of one's turn?

Answer: Landing in a "safe" zone or "home" with two feet

When stepping in the home, a player can step with one foot or two, since it is a safe zone with no specific stepping rules. However, if one's marker lands on a line, one steps on a line or outside the lines, or if one misses a square which needed to be stepped in, then the remainder of their turn is lost and they must give way to the next player.
9. In the card game "Phase 10", one may choose to play a Skip card on any player, not just the next player in the succession.

Answer: True

When a player plays a Skip card, they may choose any other player to lose a turn, not just the next player in the order. Skip cards in "Phase 10" were originally colored blue, but this caused some confusion, especially when making "phases" in the game. Subsequent editions have changed the Skip card's color to black to avoid this confusion.
10. When playing the game of "Scrabble", one may choose to "skip" playing a word on the board and instead perform what action?

Answer: Exchange any number of tiles

One may choose not to play a word if their current tiles do not put them at an advantage when playing a word. The player can then exchange anywhere from one to seven (all) of their tiles.

When exchanging tiles, one does not return the existing tiles until after drawing new tiles. This prevents the player from receiving the same tiles they wish to replace.

This play is used extremely rarely in competitive play because it results in a loss of major points. A better strategy is often to play small words to prevent the other players from having the opportunity to play uninhibited twice in a row.
