Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which smash hit for Louie Armstrong did Engelbert record on his 1968 album "A Man Without Love"?

Answer: What a Wonderful World

"What a Wonderful World" indisputably belongs to Louie Armstrong. Still, Engelbert's version is lovely and, I think, unfairly overlooked. As well as the "A Man without Love" album, it also appears on "Take My Heart" (1978).

Satchmo had a hit with "Hello Dolly" in 1964, when Engelbert was still using the name Gerry Dorsey. "A Kiss to Build a Dream On" is a ballad recorded by Louie in 1951, a couple of years before the young Gerry Dorsey decided to put down his saxophone and try singing. "High Society" is a song recorded by Louie in 1933, three years before the child who would grow up to be Engelbert Humperdink was born. The song was updated for the 1956 movie musical "High Society, starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra, in which Satchmo had a small but important part.
2. Which 1939 song, immortalized by Judy Garland, did Engelbert record on his 2009 "Legacy of Love" album?

Answer: Over the Rainbow

"The Rainbow connection" is the song sung by Kermit the Frog at the beginning of "The Muppet Movie" (1979). "Look to the Rainbow" is from the 1947 Broadway musical and 1968 movie musical "Finian's Rainbow". "Make Me Rainbows" is the love theme from the 1967 movie "Fitzwilly". To my knowledge, it has been recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, Maurine McGovern and Jack Jones, but not by Engelbert.
3. Which two Glenn Campbell hits did Engelbert record in the late '60s?

Answer: "Gentle on my Mind" and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix"

"By the Time I Get to Phoenix" is on the 1968 album "A Man without Love". "Gentle on My Mind" is on the 1969 album simply titled "Engelbert Humperdink".
4. Which Doris Day song did Engelbert record on his 1995 album, "Love Unchained?"

Answer: Secret Love

"Up, Up and Away" is on the 1968 album "A Man Without Love." "Aquarius / Let the Sunshine In" is on the 1969 album simply titled "Engelbert Humperdink" and on the 1978 album "Take My Heart."

Engelbert's record of "Up, Up and Away is featured in Season Five, Episode Two, "Between a Yuk and a Hard Place," of the U.S. romantic detective series "Moonlighting," starring Cybil Shepherd and Bruce Willis. The episode first aired in the U.S. on December 13, 1988.

9. Which Dean Martin song did Engelbert record?

Answer: Volare

Engelbert recorded "Volare" on the album "Definition of Love". The album was released in 2003.
10. Which song, originally recorded by Roy Orbison but also closely associated with Linda Ronstadt, did Engelbert record?

Answer: Blue Bayou

"Blue Bayou" is on the 1991 album "Magic Night," reissued on CD in 2007 as "Coming Home".

Having grown up in the 1970s, I associate "Blue Bayou" with Linda Ronstadt. Recently, though, I learned that it was originally recorded by Roy Orbison in 1963.
