Bible Miscellany I Trivia Quiz

There are six questions from the Old Testament and four from the New. The questions are straight-forward, but while the majority are obvious a couple are obscure. I used the King James version for all references.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was so hungry he traded his family inheritance for a meal of lentils?

Answer: Esau

Genesis 25: 27-34 describe Jacob taking advantage of his elder brother (by a few minutes) as Esau returns starving from a hunting trip. As you can imagine, this created a family feud that lasted for many years. The twin brothers finally reconcile in chapters 32 and 33.
2. When Moses and Aaron appeared before Pharaoh and asked him to let the Israelites go, Pharoah demanded a miracle (in effect asking them to provide credentials). What did Moses and Aaron do?

Answer: Aaron threw down his rod and it became a snake.

The story is in Exodus 7. Pharoah's magicians threw down their rods, and they became snakes as well. But then Aaron's snake went around and swallowed all of the other snakes. The boils and lice came later, during the plagues.
3. After helping them escape from Egypt, God gave the Children of Israel the famous Ten Commandments. However, the ten commandments are described slightly differently in Exodus 20 and in Deuteronomy 5. Which reason is the one Deuteronomy gives to keep every seventh day Sabbath?

Answer: to remember that God brought you out of Egypt "with a mighty hand."

Deuteronomy 5. Had the question referred to the Exodus 20 version, the 'rested from creating the world' answer would have been correct.
4. Who tied burning torches to the tails of foxes and loosed them in his enemies' fields?

Answer: Samson

Judges 15. Samson is angry because his wife's father won't let him be with her because he had earlier repudiated her for giving away his secrets to his enemies.
5. When paring his army down to an elite force, how did Gideon choose his final three hundred?

Answer: Those who drank from their hand on the run rather than stopping to drink.

Judges 7. The elite three hundred eventually defeated a force "like the grasshoppers for number."
6. Who threatened to cut a baby in half as a way of testing the truthfulness of its mother?

Answer: King Solomon

The story is told in 1 Kings 3. Two women were fighting over custody of an infant; by pretending to solve the dilemma by giving each woman half a child and noting their reactions, Solomon figured out who the real mother was. This was the incident that gave Solomon the reputation of being the wisest man who ever lived.
7. In Luke's version of the Christmas story, a decree to tax all the world caused Mary and Joseph to travel to Bethlehem. Who made that decree?

Answer: Caesar Augustus

Luke 2. The King James version refers to taxing; other translations refer to a census.
8. What, according to John, was the occasion of first miracle of Jesus?

Answer: a wedding

John 2. The miracle was turning water into wine when the wedding host ran out of the wine he had purchased. The guests thought the miraculous wine was better tasting.
9. Which action did Christ NOT do when he appeared to his disciples after the resurrection?

Answer: Foretold the destruction of the temple

Christ foretold the destruction of the temple before he was crucified, and it was one of the many things that made the leaders furious with him. After the resurrection, the disciples interpreted the prophecy as referring to Christ's own body (temple), and so the prophecy was typically considered fulfilled.

The fish breakfast is described in John 21:4-14; the unrecognized 'walked and talked' is in Luke 24: 13-35; the invitation to Thomas is in John 20: 24-29.
10. Who was chosen the twelfth apostle (replacing Judas) after Christ's ascension?

Answer: Matthias

Acts 1. When they heard that Judas had committed suicide, the other apostles chose two highly regarded disciples and cast lots between them. Matthias was the winner.
