The school's unique Muleriders nickname is derived from their early gridrion ssuad having to ride mules from the college to the nearest railway station, six miles away, when playing a road game. SAU are members of the NCAA Division II Great American Conference.

In 1986, their rodeo team won the first team national title in school history.
