Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Swansea City were founded in 1912 under what name?

Answer: Swansea Town

Swansea was a town in south Wales when the football club were formed in 1912, so they took the name of Swansea Town. Swansea was granted city status in 1969, to mark Prince Charles' investiture as Prince of Wales, and the football team changed their name from Town to City the following year.
2. Which league were Swansea City members of from their formation in 1912 until being elected into the Football League in 1920?

Answer: Southern League

The Southern League was the strongest league outside the Football League prior to World War I, and Swansea's early opponents in it included Southampton, West Ham United and Crystal Palace. When the Football League decided to add a third division of clubs in 1920, Swansea were among those invited to form it, and they finished the 1920-21 season in a creditable 5th position.
3. What was the name of the stadium where Swansea City played their home games from 1912 until 2005?

Answer: Vetch Field

Swansea City moved into the Vetch Field upon their formation in 1912. A vetch is a flowering plant that is part of the legume family, and these were growing on the piece of ground where the stadium was built. A record crowd of 32,796 attended a game against Arsenal in 1968, with modern safety standards reducing the capacity to around 12,000 by the early 21st century.

In 2005, the club moved into the brand-new Liberty Stadium (later renamed the Swansea.com Stadium), which they shared with the local rugby union team, Neath-Swansea Ospreys.
4. What has been the first-choice colour of shirts worn by Swansea City throughout their existence?

Answer: White

Swansea City have always worn white shirts. A tangerine trim was introduced in the 1960s, but this was replaced by a black trim in the early 70s. Shorts are normally white, with black ones worn in the occasional season.
5. In season 1924-25, Swansea were promoted to Division Two for the first time, then, a year later, went on an amazing F.A. Cup run that was only ended in the semi-finals. Which team ended their dream of a Wembley final?

Answer: Bolton Wanderers

In season 1925-26, Swansea's F.A. Cup adventure saw them eliminate Exeter City, Watford, Blackpool, Stoke City, Millwall and Arsenal. Their run came to an end in the semi-finals when Bolton Wanderers defeated them 3-0 at White Hart Lane. Bolton would go on to lift the trophy, beating Manchester City in the final.
6. Swansea City used to take part in the Welsh Cup until rules excluding "English League-based clubs" (teams playing in England) were enforced in the early 21st century. Swansea's 1961 triumph in this tournament meant they became the first Welsh team to play in the European Cup-Winners Cup the following season. It was a short participation. Which German team knocking them out in the preliminary round?

Answer: Motor Jena

Swansea City made their European debut in October, 1961, with a game against East German team Motor Jena (later known as Carl Zeiss Jena). Brayley Reynolds had the honour of scoring their first-ever European goal in a 2-2 draw. The game took place in neutral Linz, Austria, due to travel/political issues of the time.

The second leg, in East Germany, saw Swansea thrashed 5-1. Swansea would eventually play a European game on home soil in 1966, against Slavia Sofia of Bulgaria.
7. Swansea City went on an amazing run between 1978 and 1981, winning promotion from Division 4 to Division 1 in just four seasons. Which former Welsh international player was the manager at the helm during this era?

Answer: John Toshack

John Toshack was a former Liverpool striker who was appointed as player-manager of Swansea City in March, 1978. He led them to promotion from Division 4 that season, followed by another promotion, from Division 3, the following year. After finishing mid-table in Division 2 in season 1979-80, Swansea were promoted to the top tier for the first time in their history the following season.

They finished sixth in their debut season at the highest level, but then came an amazing collapse, and the club were back in the fourth tier by 1986. Toshack had left the club in 1984 to take over at Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon.
8. Which Welsh striker set a club record by scoring 164 league goals for Swansea City during two spells with the club, from 1947 to 1958 and then from 1965 to 1968?

Answer: Ivor Allchurch

Ivor Allchurch, from Swansea, signed for his hometown club in 1947 and score 124 league goals for them during his first spell there. He moved to Newcastle United in 1958 and then to Cardiff City in 1962 before returning to Swansea in 1965. He bagged another 40 league goals for the club before moving on to non-league football in 1968. He was capped 68 times by Wales, scoring 23 times.
9. Swansea City won their first major trophy in the English football system in 2012-13, lifting the League Cup. Which team, who were in the fourth tier at the time, did they defeat in the final?

Answer: Bradford City

2012-13 was definitely a season for the underdogs in the League Cup. Although Swansea were in the Premier League at the time, they weren't regarded as one of the favourites to win the trophy. They upset Liverpool at Anfield in the fourth round and Chelsea in the semi-finals on their way to Wembley. Bradford City's cup run was even more unexpected given their league status. They ousted Arsenal on penalties in the quarter finals and Aston Villa in a two-legged semi-final.

The final itself was an anti-climax as Swansea cruised to a 5-0 victory to take the trophy to Wales for the first time. Bradford did have some consolation later in the season when they returned to Wembley for the fourth tier play-off final and clinched promotion by defeating Northampton Town 3-0.
10. Swansea City set a new club record for their largest victory in 1982, in a European Cup-Winners Cup tie. Which team were the victims of this 12-0 thrashing?

Answer: Sliema Wanderers (Malta)

After winning a preliminary round tie against Portuguese club Braga in the 1982-83 European Cup-Winners Cup, Swansea City were drawn against Maltese minnows Sliema Wanderers in the first round. On 15th September 1982, at the Vetch Field, Swansea scored 12 goals, with Ian Walsh grabbing a hat-trick. Swansea didn't show Sliema much sympathy in the second leg in Malta either, winning 5-0 for an overall 17-0 aggregate victory. Swansea's run in the tournament ended in the next round at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.
