Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the episode "Blink", we got to see the first appearance of a very stony faced enemy called "The Weeping ___?" - What is the missing name?

Answer: Angels

The episode written by Stephen Moffat, was first aired in the UK on 9 June 2007 and centered mainly around the life and actions of Sally Sparrow and her best friend's brother, Larry Nightingale. Sally was attempting to understand the meaning of the DVD Easter egg, left for her in 15 different titles by the Doctor, who along with Martha was trapped in the past.

The angels were portrayed by actresses and the filmed images were frozen by digital effects to give the 'statuesque' appearance.

The Doctor, when explaining what the Angels were, described them as "The only psychopaths in the universe to kill you nicely".

Question by english_gent
2. What was the name of the Seventh Doctor's companion, whose name began with the letter "A", and was portrayed on screen by Sophie Aldred?

Answer: Ace

Ace frequently referred to the Seventh Doctor as "Professor" and became his companion when Melanie Bush (played by Bonnie Langford) decided to stay with Glitz in the episode "Dragonfire".

Question by Daddy19
3. Airing on November 23rd, 1963, what was the title of the very first episode and serial of "Doctor Who"?

Answer: An Unearthly Child

"An Unearthly Child" referred to the Doctor's granddaughter Susan Foreman. Exiled from their own people (the Time Lords, as it is learned MUCH later), the Doctor and Susan were living on Earth for a time. Her unexplained knowledge gaps drew the attention of her teachers, Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright, who followed her to the TARDIS and became the Doctor's first HUMAN companions.

"The Abominable Snowmen" was a Patrick Troughton (second Doctor) story that aired in 1967. It was the 38th serial since the beginning, occurring during the 5th season.

"Arc of Infinity" was the 123rd serial and the first of the 20th season, with Peter Davison as the (Fifth) Doctor.

"Attack of the Cybermen" aired two years later to kick off the 22nd season. It was the 137th serial since the beginning, and only the second to feature Colin Baker as the new sixth Doctor.

4. The Autons were first seen during Jon Pertwee's era of "Doctor Who" and were also seen in the very first episode of Christopher Eccleston's portrayal of the role, where he also met up with the character played by Billie Piper. What was this episode called?

Answer: Rose

The Autons were first seen surrounding Rose in the basement of her workplace (Henrik's), who was rescued by the Doctor. The end of the episode saw the controlling entity of the Autons (the Nestene Consciousness) being destroyed by a vial of 'anti-plastic'.

Both the Autons and the Nestene Consciousness were first seen in 'Spearhead from Space' back in 1970, and the Autons reappeared in 'Terror of the Autons' in 1971, both when Jon Pertwee was the Doctor.

"Rose" marked the first episode of the revived "Doctor Who" programme and also saw the first mention of the Shadow Proclamation.

Question by english_gent
5. What alien, seen in 2006's second series episode "Love & Monsters" with tenth Doctor David Tennant, was created as a result of a children's "Design a Doctor Who Monster" contest?

Answer: The Abzorbaloff

Abzorbaloff was an alien that could absorb people into his body through direct touch. Nine-year-old William Grantham came up with the design. Through the storyline, we learn that the Abzorbaloff is a relation to the Slitheen of Raxacoricofallapatorius, although not a friendly one. Abzorbaloff is not the name of the species itself - that is not learned - but was the descriptive name given to the creature by the point-of-view main character Elton Pope.

Question by reedy
6. The first two-part episode of the Christopher Eccleston era was entitled "Aliens of London". What species were the aliens concerned?

Answer: Slitheen

The question as to whether humanity was alone in the universe was answered as an alien spaceship crashed into the River Thames, but nothing's as easy as that in "Doctor Who". The ship was launched from Earth with no aliens aboard - but were they already amongst us?

Question by Daddy19
7. Aggedor was a monster seen during Jon Pertwee's era on two separate occasions. In which story did we first see him?

Answer: The Curse of Peladon

The episode saw the Doctor and his companion Jo making a test flight in the previously Earth-Bound TARDIS. They arrived on Peladon, where the Doctor was mistaken for the chairman of the upcoming committee meeting to determine the suitability of Peladon's application to join the Galactic Federation.

Aggedor was misused by the High Priest Hepesh to assist Arcturus' plans to sabotage the meeting, as he was led to believe the Federation would exploit Pelodon's mineral riches. When their duplicity was revealed, Arcturus was killed whilst Hepesh ran off to the tunnels where Aggedor was kept. He attempted to get the creature to kill the Doctor, who managed to tame the beast by singing a Venusian lullaby.

The story was symbolistic of the UK accession into the Common Market which was a highly topical subject at the time of airing in 1972.

8. The character of Astrid Peth appeared in the 2007 Christmas special edition of "Doctor Who" entitled "Voyage of the Damned". What was the name of the pop superstar who played her?

After a couple of small roles, Kylie Minogue's acting career took off when she joined the cast of the Australian soap opera "Neighbours". However, she is better known for her music career, where she has multiple number one hits in the UK with worldwide record sales in excess of 67 million.

Astrid Peth worked as a waitress aboard the starship "Titanic" who sacrificed herself to save the Tenth Doctor. "Astrid" is an anagram of "TARDIS" - coincidence?

Question by Daddy19
9. The 2010 Christmas special was entitled "A Christmas Carol" and starred (amongst others) Katherine Jenkins. What was the name of her character?

Answer: Abigail

Abigail had been offered to elderly miser Kazran Sardick (Michael Gambon - who also played Professor Dumbledore in the later "Harry Potter" films) as security for monies owed to him and Sardick placed her in Cryogenic stasis.

The Doctor needed Sardick's help to allow a transport carrying Amy, Rory and 4,000 others to land safely, but Sardick refused so the Doctor went back in time to enlist Abigail's help to try and change his mind.

Question by Daddy19
10. Which Doctor encountered (and fought against) the Animus, an alien that could take over the bodies of people who came into contact with gold?

Answer: The First Doctor

The Animus was an alien from the Pre-Universe, who had crossed over into our universe. It was part of a race called the Lloigors, also known as the Great Old Ones. The Animus made its appearance in "The Web Planet" - the fifth story of the second series of "Doctor Who".

11. Which of these "Doctor Who" companions is mismatched with their planet of origin?

Answer: Ace from Anathema

Ace, whose real name was Dorothy, was from Earth - London to be exact - although the when the (seventh) Doctor first encountered her, she was working as a waitress on the planet Svartos, far into the future. She got there by getting swept up in a time storm.

Adric was companion to both the fourth and fifth Doctors, Adam Mitchell briefly travelled with the ninth Doctor, and Amelia (Amy) Pond was companion to the eleventh Doctor.

Question by reedy
12. Complete the title of the first episode of Matt Smith's second season: "The Impossible ___"

Answer: Astronaut

Right at the beginning of "The Impossible Astronaut", the Doctor is seen being killed by someone in a space suit on the bank of Lake Silencio. As Rory, Amy and River Song were coming to terms with this in a cafe, the Doctor miraculously came out of the restroom.

The circumstances concerning this event were played out over the story arc that lasted the whole of Matt Smith's second season as The Doctor.

Question by Daddy19
13. What was the name of the actor who played one of the Eleventh Doctor's companions, Rory Williams?

Answer: Arthur Darvill

Thomas Arthur Darvill was born on June 17th, 1982, and he played the part of Rory Williams (later known as Rory Pond), making his first and last appearances at the same time as fellow Companion (and wife) Amelia (Amy) Pond (played by Karen Gillan). They were companions only to the Eleventh Doctor, beginning at the same time as Matt Smith.

In the series, Rory was a nurse by profession, and also spent time as an Auton, when his consciousness was preserved after his death. He spent two millenia watching over the Pandorica, with Amy locked within.

14. Russell Tovey played the role of Midshipman Frame in the episodes "Voyage Of The Damned" and "The End of Time". What was his first name?

Answer: Alonso

Midshipman Alonso Frame's first posting was on the starship Titanic and helped prevent the ship from crashing into Earth by locking himself on the bridge and following the Doctor's instructions.

The Tenth Doctor had often used the phrase "Allons-y" (French for "Let's go") and had hoped to meet someone called Alonso. He was therefore quite pleased to hear Frame's first name as it gave him the opportunity to give the instruction "Allons-y, Alonso!"

Question by Daddy19
