Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After travelling to Norway in episode 11 ('Thorapy 2: Abandonment Issues'), Pete's plans to get home are disrupted by what unanticipated complication?

Answer: A public holiday

To try and help him move past the anger Thorfinn feels each time the anniversary of his abandonment comes around, Pete travels to Norway looking for a Viking ghost who can explain what happened that fateful day. He succeeds but when he needs to start heading home, he learns that the ferry he had planned to catch isn't operating due to it being a public holiday.

Introduced in 1992 and therefore after his death, Pete hadn't known about Sami National Day during his travel agent days and so has to find alternative travel arrangements to get back to Woodstone.
2. After Flower sabotages the opening night of Jay's restaurant in episode 12 ('It's The End of the World as We Know It and What Were We Talking About?'), which 2007 Pixar film inspires a solution that allows the launch to proceed as planned?

Answer: Ratatouille

The date of Jay's restaurant opening coincides with the date Flower's cult believed the world was going to end and so in an effort to save Sam and Jay, Flower rallies the basement ghosts to take the kitchen staff out of action.

Upon realising she has been duped by her cult leader, Flower manages to save the day though by suggesting Alberta, Sasappis and Pete (who've spent many hours in the restaurant kitchen and know the recipes inside and out) act like Remy in the Pixar family film "Ratatouille" and through Sam, help her, Mark and Bela fill in for the missing kitchen staff.
3. In episode 13 ('Ghostfellas'), what component of an Italian dish results in the local mafia chapter taking an unwelcome interest in Jay's restaurant?

Answer: A sauce

Pete teaches Jay how to make an arrabbiata sauce using a recipe that's been in Carol's family for years. The chef likes it so much that he incorporates it into his restaurant's menu and, to his delight the diners love it too. All is going well until one diner confronts Jay about stealing the recipe and Carol reveals that it's her cousin Anthony and that he's the head of the local mafia chapter.
4. Hold onto your feathers! Flashbacks in episode 14 reveal that Isaac caused a kerfuffle during the drafting of the Declaration of Independence due to which item of clothing?

Answer: Ruffle

Isaac is invited to attend a meeting to draft the Declaration of Independence and had reserved a ruffle at a haberdashery for the occasion. When going to pick it up though, the haberdasher reveals that the ruffle is no longer available much to Isaac's dismay.

He makes do but when he sees Alexander Hamilton at the aforementioned meeting wearing a ruffle of the style he'd reserved, he's convinced Hamilton (who he saw at the same haberdashery earlier that day) took the ruffle reserved for him. Isaac confronts Alexander and in the process accidentally damages the founding document they were about to sign.
5. The ghosts think a groom-to-be is cheating on his fiancée when he asks which of these questions to one of the bridesmaids in episode 15 ('The Bachelorette Party')?

Answer: "Are you down for a little night sugar?"

Alberta's great grand-niece Alicia holds her bachelorette party at Woodstone Estate and after stopping by to deliver his fiancée some roses, her beau makes secret plans to meet with one of the bridesmaids "for a little night sugar". Wanting to protect her family, Alberta - with Sasappis' help - meddles, causing the bride-to-be to wonder about the faithfulness of her man.

It's only after this that they learn that "Night Sugar" is the title of a TV show concerning a family's candy dynasty and that the bridesmaid in question is related to the groom.
6. Adopting a 'waste not, want not' mentality, what does Hetty say happened to her lamb chop's bone during lunch with Jay's cousin in episode 16 ('St Hetty's Day')?

Answer: She consumed it

Jay's cousin Sunil comes to visit Woodstone and shocks everyone when he acknowledges Hetty. The ghosts theorise that this may be because Hetty has recently embraced her Irish heritage and as a result has become visible to 'livings' like Jay and Sunil on St Patrick's Day.

Sunil and Hetty have lunch together and when the former notices that Hetty hasn't touched her food, she assures him that she ate one of the lamb chops while he was on his phone. At this point he questions where the bone is and she says that she consumed it - an excuse he incredibly buys!
7. In episode 17 ('His Girl Shiki'), Sasappis is introduced to Joan, a ghost from the 1940s who worked in the 'golden age' of what industry?

Answer: Cinema

The 'golden age' of cinema is widely considered to have existed in some capacity from the mid-1910s until the mid-1960s and Joan worked as a screenwriter in the middle of this period. She has a transatlantic accent, is quick-witted, and like Pete, is not bound by property lines. Pete thinks she'd be a good match for Sasappis so he brings her back to Woodstone so they can meet.
8. When confronted by a ghost gun in episode 18 ('Smooching and Smushing'), who takes cover behind Alberta (and her "ugly hat")?

Answer: Thorfinn

Sam hires a repairman to fix their ghost trap and when he claims to sense ghosts in the mansion, he pulls out a ghost gun to destroy them. At this point, Sasappis jumps in front of Joan saying that it seemed like the "thing to do" but Thorfinn - who famously doesn't like Alberta's hat - ducks behind the 1920s jazz singer.

When she confronts him about his cowardice, he stammers through an excuse that he was protecting her backside from a potential laser beam ricochet.
9. Which 1984 music album helps Pete solve the murder of his girlfriend's husband in episode 19 ('Pinkus Returns')?

Answer: Purple Rain (Prince)

Before her death, Pete's girlfriend Donna was accused of her husband's murder in 1982 and, realising he can investigate due to his ghost power, Pete sets out to clear her name. He speaks with Donna's former neighbour who says he was already a ghost by then and saw Donna do it.

The Walkman-wearing neighbour also makes an unrelated comment that even Prince's album "Purple Rain" gets old after the millionth listen. It's this crucial comment that cracks the case because Jay knows that this album didn't come out until 1984 meaning the neighbour couldn't have been dead at the time of the murder and must be lying.
10. When keeping tabs on one of Jay's kitchen staff, which rule-following ghost unintentionally gets high in episode 20 ("I Know What You Did Thirty-Seven Summers Ago")?

Answer: Pete

Jay's restaurant is hosting a major event and so he asks Gabe (one of the kitchen staff) to refrain from doing any drugs so he can remain focused. The request goes unheeded and Gabe lights up in his car, unintentionally also sharing his high with boy scout troop leader, Pete.

Although Flower assures him that it's "groovy", Pete is dismayed saying that he's not the kind of guy who SMOKES grass but is instead the kind of guy who CUTS grass in his wife's gardening hat while drinking a lemonade.
11. In episode 21 ('Kyle'), Sasappis is nervous about consummating things with Joan. Whose advice is to initiate things by picking Joan up and throwing her onto the bed?

Answer: Thorfinn

Joan tells Sasappis that she'd like to sleep with him and considering he's a 500 year old virgin, he's nervous. He seeks advice from Trevor, Thorfinn and Flower on how to initiate things and this is where Thorfinn gives his suggestion before demonstrating what he means with Flower.

Sasappis gives it a try although things don't go quite to plan when he throws too hard and Joan ends up rolling out the side of the house and finds herself face down in a family of woodchucks!
12. In the season finale ('The Devil Went Down to Woodstone'), we get a chance to see many of the show's recurring characters make an appearance at Sam/Isaac's book launch party. Who of the following options was NOT in attendance?

Answer: Carol

Patience re-emerges from the dirt because she senses an evil presence and wants to "snuff it out". Nigel and his compatriot Jenkins attend the book launch party and are a little confused about their portrayal in the young adult, vampire version of the story. Elias also attends the book launch party but in human form, talking up Jay's restaurant to the literary guests present.

Other recurring characters who make an appearance in the finale include Jay's sister Bela, the basement ghosts, and Jay's contractor/business partner Mark, but Carol nor her fiancé Baxter are ever seen.
13. During season 4, Sasappis passes the time by sitting outside on a bench and waiting for what to happen?

Answer: A tree branch to fall

Sasappis introduces the pastime to Hetty in episode 4, saying that he's been waiting for the tree branch to fall for twenty-three years but that he felt like it would happen that day. He was wrong however because later in the season Sasappis is back on the bench, this time telling Joan that the branch is "one fat squirrel away" from coming down.

This pastime is great example of the ghosts finding entertainment in the smallest things with Hetty commenting that "nothing prepares one for the sheer boredom of endless purgatory".
14. For the first time in the series, we meet a ghost animal in season 4 and Hetty decides to name it 'the Escarghost'. What type of creature is it?

Answer: A snail

Thorfinn explains that animal ghosts are rare because most have hearts so pure that they immediately "go right up" with Alberta adding that they must have encountered a bad snail and wondering what it could have done. Even so, the group decide to keep the snail as a pet with Hetty naming him 'the Escarghost' - presumably because the French word for snail is 'escargot'.
15. A setting for many significant events in season 4, what did Jay decide to call his restaurant in the end?

Answer: Mahesh

When they visit at Christmas, Jay learns why his father is so sceptical about his endeavour to open a restaurant by eavesdropping on a conversation between his parents. He realises what he needs to say to his dad to help him get on board with the idea, and on Christmas morning reveals that he's named the restaurant after his father.

He goes on to explain that although opening a restaurant is a risk, he wants to celebrate the risks that make life exciting and honour the one his parents took in leaving India with little money and no contacts, just to try and make a better life for their family.
