Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the pilot episode, Sam inherits Woodstone Estate from her great aunt and wants to open a B&B there. Her husband Jay is immediately on board and keen to start renovating straight away.

Answer: False

Jay immediately wants to sell the estate from the moment they learn about its existence. Despite Sam's enthusiasm for the B&B idea, he remains hesitant throughout most of the episode until Sam falls down the stairs and ends up in a coma. Jay then realises that he doesn't mind where they live, as long as he's with Sam.
2. In 'Hello!' (episode 2), how does Sam prove to Jay that she can see and hear the ghosts?

Answer: Instructs him on how to fix the boiler

Sam spends most of this episode trying to ignore the ghosts after Jay points out it's likely an ongoing side effect from her concussion. After visiting the hospital and speaking with a ghost doctor, Sam acknowledges the ghosts' existence and asks them what they want.

In order to convince Jay that she can interact with ghosts, she directs him on how to fix the boiler - something she'd not know how to do on her own - by relaying instructions provided by the ghosts who died of cholera and live in the basement.
3. In 'Viking Funeral' (episode 3), Sam and Jay disagree about whether to fix Woodstone Estate's roof or fountain first. Which argument is being made by Jay?

Answer: Fix the Roof

Sam argues that they should fix the fountain in front of the mansion as it's the first thing guests will see when they arrive. Jay on the other hand argues that they should focus on the bigger picture and fix the roof.

Although Sam wins the argument, the contractors uncover Thorfinn's bones as they prepare to install new pipes resulting in a further dilemma for Sam and Jay to consider: sell the bones to a museum or give Thorfinn a viking funeral.
4. In 'Dinner Party' (episode 4), Sam and Jay host their uptight neighbours Henry and Margaret Farnsby to a dinner party. What non-contact sport did Henry say they've recently gotten into, claiming that it's the fastest growing sport in America?

Answer: Pickleball

Combining elements of badminton, tennis, and ping-pong, pickleball involves batting a plastic ball (which has holes in it) back and forth across a net. In this episode, the ghosts learn that the Farnsbys demolished their carriage house in order to build a pickleball court in violation with the local Historical Preservation Board ordinances.

As Henry is the chair of this board, Sam uses this information to convince him to approve the permit for their B&B.
5. In 'Halloween' (episode 5), Thorfinn accidentally burns down the Woodstone Estate gazebo. Some of the ghosts are happy to lie to Sam and Jay and blame some local kids. Despite their often questionable morals, which of the following ghosts wanted to tell Sam and Jay the truth instead?

Answer: Trevor

At the time Thorfinn burns down the gazebo, Trevor, Alberta and Pete were watching 1984 film 'Ghostbusters'. Now that he's a ghost, it's a lot more disturbing than Trevor remembers (Alberta and Pete are similarly perturbed). When Pete wants to tell Sam and Jay what really happened to the gazebo, Trevor sides with him saying, "We spend our days complaining that Halloween makes us out to be evil and movies paint us to be the villains. But if we let some kids take the fall for something that we did, then aren't we exactly what they say we are? And don't we deserve to be busted?"

This speech changes Sasappis', Hetty's, and Isaac's minds and the ghosts do come clean to Sam and have to live with the consequences (no TV for a week).
6. In 'Pete's Wife' (episode 6), Sasappis' blood boils when he walks in on Thorfinn watching which fictional reality TV show without him?

Answer: It's Getting Hot In Here

Sam describes the show by saying, "they take 20 sexy singles and they put them in a really cold house so everybody has to stay bundled up and you can't see what anyone looks like - so that the singles can connect emotionally. And then each week, the thermostat gets set higher and higher until by the end, everybody is naked and ideally in love".

Both Sasappis and Thorfinn initially say that the idea of the show is stupid until they find themselves hooked.
7. In 'Flower's Article' (episode 7), Sam visits the Ulster County Review office to pitch article ideas as a freelance journalist. What are the names of the two ghosts she meets whilst there - a 12 year old boy and a Lenape woman?

Answer: Winky and Shiki

Winky introduces himself first and reveals that he was trampled by a horse. Shiki then introduces herself, says she's Lenape, and that she's been a ghost since the 1500s. Before Sam can tell her that she also knows a Lenape ghost (Sasappis), the editor walks in.

Sam later discovers that Shiki and Sasappis do know each other and their relationship involved unrequited love. This leads to Jay getting involved and helping Sasappis send messages to Shiki via Sam.
8. In 'D&D' (episode 8), Jay plays Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) with Sam and some of the ghosts after his character is killed off in the campaign already underway with his New York friends. Which of the ghosts is the biggest fan of this role-playing game (because it was really popular in the decade of their death)?

Answer: Pete

When Jay's friends "break up with him" (his words), Pete can relate because his character, Gelvin Monkspear, was killed by the Demogorgon in one of his own Dungeons and Dragons campaigns. Jay then has the idea to be Dungeon Master for a campaign with Sam translating for Pete. Alberta and Sasappis also participate and a great time is had by all except Sam who is bored.

When she learns that campaigns can go on for months or even years, she lies to Jay by saying that it was the ghosts who didn't want to play any more.
9. In 'Alberta's Fan' (episode 9), a man named Todd Pearlman comes to Woodstone Estate and is Sam and Jay's first unofficial guest. We learn that he's a big fan of Alberta's - he even has a museum dedicated to her in his mum's garage! What unusual item does he say is his most prized possession though?

Answer: Alberta's toenail

Todd says that he bought it online and hoped that one day he might be able to make his own Alberta using just a small piece of nail, comparing it to what the scientists did in the film 'Jurassic Park'.

Upon hearing that Todd's most prized possession was her toenail, Alberta's reaction is a loud "Oh, hell no!" followed by "What is wrong with you, Todd?"
10. In 'Possession' (episode 10), Hetty possesses Jay right before an important wedding planner comes to Woodstone Estate. She suggests a number of options for the wedding menu but which of her suggestions does Jay end up cooking for the sample dish?

Answer: Squab (pigeon)

Of course, none of the meat options suggested by Hetty are ingredients Sam and Jay have available and there aren't any nearby specialty stores that supply them. As Jay says, "people don't eat boiled calf's heads or beaver tails any more. We found better things".

Coincidentally, Sam and Jay have hired someone to come and remove the pigeons in their attic so Jay pivots and ends up cooking them instead. Since squab is just immature pigeon (generally under 4 weeks old), this is a pretty close match and the meal Jay eventually produces goes over well with the wedding planner.
11. In 'Sam's Mom' (episode 11), Sam visits the restaurant in Ohio where her mother died and we find out that she has become a ghost. Perhaps giving a clue to her final meal, what is Sam's mum's ghost power?

Answer: Shrimp breath

Sam's mum, Sheryl, died of an allergic reaction at Mojitown - a Mexican restaurant named after a Cuban cocktail featuring decor that includes a cheeseburger playing a (Hawaiin) ukulele. When Sam describes her accident and the role Trevor's power played in it, Sheryl says that her ghost power "sucks" and demonstrates that she can burp on a living and they will smell shrimp.
12. In 'Jay's Sister' (episode 12), Jay's sister comes to visit Woodstone after breaking up with her boyfriend. When she arrives, we learn that she's already met someone new via a dating app - Trevor! What common Jewish toast did Trevor include in his dating profile?

Answer: L'Chaim

Although all of the options are the equivalent of the English "cheers" in different languages, "L'Chaim" is Hebrew and is commonly used in Jewish families. It literally translates as "to life".

Trevor uses the photo from his online obituary (the only photo of him on the internet) and the text "L'chaim, ladies" as the entirety of his profile however it seems to have worked because he matched with Jay's sister, Bela. When Bela discovers that the person she's been messaging is dead, she initially thinks that Jay and/or Sam are responsible since it was their device that Trevor had been using.

Note: "Kanpai" is Japanese, "Yamas" is Greek, and "Prost" is German.
13. In 'The Vault' (episode 13), Sam and Jay's contractor finds a secret passage which leads to an impenetrable vault containing the ghost of Hetty's womanising husband, Elias. What happens to livings when Elias walks through them, i.e. his ghost power?

Answer: They momentarily become horny

Elias uses this power a number of times throughout the episode and one memorable occasion results in the cancellation of the wedding Woodstone Estate was hosting. This leaves Sam and Jay in some financial difficulty until they find an expensive watch on Elias' corpse which they can sell, tiding them over until the B&B gets off the ground.
14. In 'Ghostwriter' (episode 14), which ghost admits they might now be a feminist ("as long as it doesn't mean supporting women handling money or riding bicycles") and encourages Flower to stand up to Pete after he didn't want to watch basketball with her?

Answer: Hetty

Pete is upset that Jay enjoyed spending time bonding with his contractor Mark whilst watching basketball when this was a pastime he and Jay used to enjoy doing together (with Sam as the intermediary of course). Despite Flower offering to watch basketball with him a couple of times, Pete's too focused on Jay ditching him to realise he's done the same to Flower.

When Flower is feeling down about this, Hetty tells her to not just sit there and take being disrespected by a man, but rather get up and do something about it. Flower is shocked and responds with, "Damn Hetty! Are you a feminist now?"
15. In 'Thorapy' (episode 15), we learn that Thorfinn has been having nightmares about killing his best friend for the past 500+ years. Can you stop being a grouch and tell me Thorfinn's best friend's name?

Answer: Oskar

Not only did Thorfinn kill Oskar but he also ate him raw. Although everyone is initially horrified and disgusted by this revelation, Thorfinn then reveals that it was the depths of winter, they were starving, and importantly, that Oskar was a squirrel.
16. In 'Trevor's Pants' (episode 16), we learn more about Trevor's life, death and the 'bro code' he lived by. Which icy, alcoholic beverage was central to a recurring prank the friends pulled on each other?

Answer: Chekhov Chill

The prank involved someone hiding a Chekhov Chill and whoever finds it must immediately drop to one knee and drink the bottle in one go whilst the other 'bros' surround him chanting "chill!" with gusto.

Trevor had to do this on the night that he died and the alcohol, mixed with the drugs he took, likely contributed to his death.
17. In 'Attic Girl' (episode 17), Jay inadvertently wakes up a teenage ghost named Stephanie who lives in the attic. Dressed in a ruched, blue satin dress with full makeup and permed hair, what staple high school event was Stephanie on her way to when she was murdered along with her tuxedoed date?

Answer: Prom

Stephanie was the victim of a chainsaw murderer who'd escaped from a local mental facility in 1987. As a ghost, she sleeps for almost the entire year and only stays awake for approximately one day.
18. In 'Farnsby & B' (episode 18), Thorfinn reveals that he put a curse on Woodstone Estate to prevent the B&B from opening not long after Sam and Jay moved in. By the end of the episode, did Sam end up breaking the curse using the procedure outlined by Thor?

Answer: No

The procedure involves sourcing ingredients that were incredibly rare in Thorfinn's time: sugar and cinnamon. All Sam needs to do is pour them into boiling water whilst Thor speaks an incantation and the curse shall immediately be broken.

Alberta questions whether this will reverse all the negative effects caused by the curse and therefore cause Sam to lose the ability to see and interact with the ghosts. Thorfinn doesn't know (he's never had so much sugar before!) and after some moving speeches from each of the ghosts, Sam decides she can't go through with the procedure if there is even a small chance.
19. Throughout the season, American Revolutionary ghost Isaac has been harbouring secret feelings for which of the other ghosts who live on Woodstone Estate?

Answer: Nigel

Isaac finally admits to himself that he's developed feelings for Nigel in episode 15 ('Thorapy') after he tries to seduce Hetty and can't bring himself to even kiss her "comely nape" (as he put it). When apologising to her, he says that he was trying to prove something to himself and that it's Nigel who's caught his eye. She is shocked but understanding.
20. By the end of season 1, has one of the main cast of ghosts (Pete, Alberta, Hetty, Isaac, Thorfinn, Flower, and Sasappis) successfully left the Estate?

Answer: No

The only times we've seen ghost characters leave the estate is at the beginning of the pilot episode when Sam's great aunt dies and ascends to another realm, and when Hetty's ex-husband Elias descends to Hell in episode 13 ('The Vault').

In episode 10 ('Possession'), Hetty unsuccessfully tries to leave the estate whilst possessing Jay and in the same episode, we see Flower unable to leave the estate whilst chasing a butterfly.
