Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 23rd-century con man

Answer: Harcourt Fenton Mudd

Harcourt Fenton "Harry" Mudd was a 23rd century con man, whose crimes ranged from selling patents he didn't own to selling beautiful brides to using androids to hijack command of a starship. ("Star Trek" episodes "Mudd's Women" and "I, Mudd")

While most of his schemes were harmless, early in his career he used time-travel technology to repeatedly attempt serious crimes, and if he failed, he'd then jump back in time to try again with his new knowledge. While going through time loops, he had free rein to be as reckless and heartless, often killing with no compunction. He tried one of these time-travel crimes to steal the USS Discovery. Unknown to him, engineer Commander Paul Stamets had been biologically altered in such a way that he was cognizant of the time loop. He was able to alert the other crew members (even though they couldn't remember the repeated time loop) and they managed to destroy Mudd's time-travel technology and get him escorted off the ship by his supposed love Stella and her father. ("Star Trek: Discovery" episode "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad")

Harry Mudd was portrayed/voiced by Roger C. Carmel in "Star Trek" and "Star Trek: The Animated Series"). He was portrayed by Rainn Wilson in "Star Trek: Discovery".
2. Captain of the USS Cerritos

Answer: Carol Freeman

Captain Carol Freeman was the commanding officer of the USS Cerritos. She was at times a bit officious and micro-managing, but was still a good captain. She was often distracted by her daughter and one of her officers - Ensign Beckett Mariner - who did things her own way instead of the official way. She was married to Admiral Alonzo Freeman. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks")

She was a bit insulted by the way that officers of support ships like the Cerritos were looked down upon. They weren't invited to command parties, and were usually given second-contact missions - where they would do all of the paperwork necessary for a new civilization to join the Federation.

Captain Carol Freeman was voiced by Dawnn Lewis.
3. Immortal Earthman

Answer: Flint

Flint was an immortal, a human born on Earth in the 39th century BCE. He discovered he was immortal when he was critically wounded in battle, but did not die. He lived various lives on Earth, sometimes living in obscurity, other times becoming relatively famous. According to his admissions to a landing party from the USS Enterprise, he had been Solomon, Alexander the Great, Lazarus, and Leonardo da Vinci, as well as knowing other historical figures like Galileo and Moses.

When he became disgruntled with the civilization on Earth, he bought planet Holberg 917G and moved there. Unknown to him, moving away from Earth ended his immortality, and he would eventually die. ("Star Trek" episode "Requiem for Methuselah")

Flint was portrayed by James Daly. He was the father of actors Tim Daly and Tyne Daly.
4. Collector of rare items

Answer: Kivas Fajo

Fajo was a collector of unique items, a member of the Collector's Guild. The items in his collection were extremely rare: the last of a species known as Laplings, a 20th-century baseball card of Roger Maris (that still smelled of bubble gum), rare Earth paintings, and (for a short time) Lieutenant Commander Data. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Most Toys")

Fajo was portrayed by Saul Rubinek. He was actually a last-minute replacement for the original Fajo actor David Rappaport, who attempted suicide halfway through filming the episode. Rappaport later tried again and succeeded in killing himself just five days before "The Most Toys" aired.
5. Flag officer in charge of NX Program

Answer: Maxwell Forrest

Admiral Maxwell Forrest was the flag officer in charge of the NX Project, which was to develop a warp 5 capable starship for Earth. He was also the officer who assigned Captain Jonathan Archer to be the commanding officer of the USS Enterprise (NX-01). ("Star Trek: Enterprise")

Admiral Maxwell Forrest was portrayed by Vaughn Armstrong. Armstrong has a deep involvement in "Star Trek" productions. He has played a dozen different characters of various species: human, Klingon, Romulan, Kreetassan, Hirogen, Vidiian, Cardassian, and a former Borg of Species 571.
6. Holodeck nightclub singer

Answer: Vic Fontaine

Vic Fontaine was an interactive hologram that was a part of a 1960s Las Vegas holosuite program in Quark's on Deep Space 9. His character owned Vic's Las Vegas Lounge. His program became quite popular on the station, owing to the great music and Vic's charm. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine")

He was self-aware that he was a hologram. He also gave out sage advice to the personnel who visited him. He even long-term hosted Ensign Nog when Nog was recovering physically and emotionally after losing his leg. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episodes "The Siege of AR-558" and "It's Only A Paper Moon")

The mirror universe counterpart of Vic Fontaine was an actual person, not a hologram. He was killed by mirror-Bashir during a firefight. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "The Emperor's New Cloak")

Vic Fontaine was portrayed by James Darren. Darren had starred with William Shatner in the police drama "T.J. Hooker".
7. Friend of Brad Boimler from Starfleet Academy

Answer: Fletcher

Ensign Fletcher was a command division officer on the USS Cerritos. He and Boimler were friends at the academy. Boimler said he was a natural peace negotiator because he'd convinced some Nausicaans to just spit in Boimler's face instead of eating his heart.

Fletcher tended to get flustered, especially when Captain Freeman instituted her micro-managed temporal edicts on how much time was allowed to do specific tasks on the ship.

He tried to reprogram isolinear cores by connecting his brain to them. This instead gave a form of life to the equipment, as well as seriously corrupting his brain. When his meddling with the cores actually ended up saving the ship, he was promoted and transferred to the USS Titan. But once there, his incompetence became apparent and he was then transferred to Starbase 80. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "Terminal Provocations")

Ensign Fletcher was voiced by Tim Robinson in the one episode where Fletcher had dialogue. His other six appearances were just as a background character.
8. Command division officer under Captain Kirk

Answer: John Farrell

Lieutenant John Farrell was a command division officer who served under Captain Kirk on the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701). ("Star Trek")

On one occasion, when Harry Mudd and his three female companions were on board after their ship was destroyed, they needed a communicator to contact some dilithium miners on Rigel XII. Mudd sent Magda to flirt with Farrell, who gave her a communicator and supplied the frequency needed to call the Rigel XII miners. ("Star Trek" episode "Mudd's Women")

Farrell was portrayed by Jim Goodwin.
9. Beverly Crusher's grandmother

Answer: Felisa Howard

Felisa Howard was a healer (not an accredited doctor) who lived on the Caldos colony. She adopted Beverly Crusher when Beverly's parents were killed.

She was possessed by an anaphasic lifeform known as Ronin, which could live with the women of the Howard family. After she died, Ronin tried to transfer over to Beverly, but she destroyed the candle that had been Ronin's receptacle when he wasn't with a Howard woman. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Sub Rosa")

Felisa Howard was portrayed by Ellen Albertini Dow.
10. Officer who tried to frame Kirk for his murder

Answer: Benjamin Finney

Benjamin Finney and James Kirk had been friends since their Starfleet Academy days, Finney being a young instructor and Kirk a midshipman. They became such good friends that Finney named his daughter Jame after Kirk.

They were both assigned to the USS Republic, working in Engineering. During a shift change, Kirk discovered a circuit had been left open on an atomic matter pile, which would've destroyed the ship. He dutifully logged the incident, not knowing that it was his friend Finney who had forgotten to close the circuit. Because of this, Finney was moved to the bottom of the promotions list. This basically allowed the younger Kirk to bypass Finney in rank, and created a rift between the two men.

After Kirk became captain of the USS Enterprise, Finney was assigned to the Enterprise as records officer. He was still a lieutenant commander. This embittered him more, and he planned to sabotage Kirk's career.

While working in an ion pod during an ion storm that the Enterprise was investigating, he left the pod before the alert status went from yellow to red. (At red alert, the pod would have to be jettisoned.) Nobody realized this, so when red alert was raised, Kirk had to jettison the pod he believed still had Finney in it. While the Enterprise went to Starbase 11 for repairs after the storm, Finney used his experience as records officer to modify the computer records, making it look like Kirk had jettisoned the pod before the red alert. Commodore Stone, investigating the death of Finney, saw this doctored evidence and called for the court-martial of Kirk.

While the evidence was damning, Spock did his own investigation of the computer system. He found that he could beat the computer at chess (several times), a near-impossibility. He then surmised that the computer programming had been tampered with, which put doubt in the veracity of the computer records.

Kirk's lawyer, Samuel Cogley, had a change of venue approved so that they could prove that Finney was still alive. The Enterprise's crew was ordered off the ship, so only the court personnel, the transporter operator, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy were left aboard. Spock then played the sound of every person's heartbeat as picked up by internal sensors. McCoy then used a device to mask out everyone's heartbeat one-by-one. After everyone was accounted for, there was still one unaccounted-for heartbeat: Finney.

"Officers and gentlemen... captains all! Except for Finney, and his one mistake." - Ben Finney

Finney was portrayed by Richard Webb.
