Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Borg designated Third of Five

Answer: Hugh

Hugh was a Borg with the designation Third of Five whose scout ship crashed in the Argolis Cluster. All of the other drones on his ship died. Upon finding him as a survivor, Dr. Crusher beamed him up to the USS Enterprise-D, despite the protest of Captain Picard. He discovered that he was now disconnected from the collective hive mind of the Borg. He had never experienced individuality, but was guided through it by Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "I Borg")

Hugh was portrayed by Jonathan Del Arco. Del Arco also portrayed Fantome in the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "The Void".
2. Female Exocomp traitor

Answer: Peanut Hamper

Peanut Hamper was an Exocomp, a sentient industrial and utility robot. Since their first appearance ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Quality of Life"), Exocomps have developed a family structure. Peanut Hamper is the daughter from one Exocomp family. She wanted to irritate her father, Kevin, so she joined Starfleet. As an ensign, she was assigned to the USS Cerritos, with Ensign D'Vana Tendi as her liaison officer. Tendi asked her if she had a numeric designation, to which Peanut Hamper responded that she didn't want to sound robotic, and chose the name Peanut Hamper because it was "mathematically perfect."

She appeared to be clumsy at engineering tasks. But when brought to Sick Bay, she showed Dr. T'Ana some new micro-suturing techniques that were based on the doctor's journal articles.

Later, in the midst of an attack by a Pakled clumpship, it was deduced that the Cerritos could upload a computer virus to the attacker's systems. Unfortunately, it would have to be physically delivered. After going over their options, the crew determined that Peanut Hamper would be the ideal agent to fly over to the Pakled and deliver the virus. Instead, Peanut Hamper declined to become a "virus bomb", taunted the crew that she hoped they enjoyed having their guts spilled, then beamed herself off the ship.

Soon thereafter, the USS Titan under Captain William Riker arrived and drove off the Pakleds. As the Titan was leaving the scene of the battle, Peanut Hamper can be seen floating helplessly among the debris of the battle, crying, "Help." ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "No Small Parts")

Peanut Hamper was voiced by Kether Donohue. Donohue also voiced another Exocomp, Almond Basket, in "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy" episode "Beta Test".
3. Operations officer on USS Voyager

Answer: Harry Kim

Ensign (much later Admiral ["Star Trek: Starfleet Academy" memorial wall]) Harry Kim was the operations officer on the USS Voyager during its first mission, to find Tuvok, who had covertly infiltrated the Maquis. It was on this mission that Voyager was seized by the Caretaker and brought to the Delta Quadrant.

Kim notoriously remained an ensign for Voyager's entire 7-year trek back to the Alpha Quadrant. (In real life, navy officers usually only spend 18-24 months before being promoted to lieutenant junior grade.) Even his friend Tom Paris, who had been given a lieutenant j.g. field commission by Captain Janeway ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Caretaker"), then demoted as punishment ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "30 Days"), was promoted back to lieutenant j.g. while Kim was still an ensign. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Unimatrix Zero")

In "Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "Fissure Quest", the USS Anaximander rescued multiple Harry Kims from various quantum realities. All of them were still ensigns, except for the last one, who was a lieutenant. This surprised all of the Ensigns Kim.

Harry Kim was portrayed and voiced by Garrett Wang. He was also portrayed in a flashback to Harry's childhood by Kenny Yee ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Favorite Son"), and as an infant by Taylor Chong when Harry was transformed by The Clown ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "The Thaw").
4. Aenar engineer on USS Enterprise under Captain Pike

Answer: Hemmer

Lieutenant Hemmer was an Aenar (subspecies of Andorian) who served as chief engineer on the USS Enterprise under Captain Pike. Like other Aenar, he was blind, but had superior other senses that allowed him to navigate through life.

Hemmer sacrificed himself when he realized that he had been implanted with Gorn embryos. Just before he died, he gave Uhura the advice, "Open yourself. Make a home for yourself amongst others, and you will find joy more often than sadness." He then walked out of a cargo bay through a force field, reveled in the outdoor cold ("Just like Andoria"), then stepped off a ledge into a deep chasm.

Lieutenant Hemmer was portrayed by Bruce Horak. Just like Hemmer, Horak is blind (90%), losing his sight to cancer when he was a child. He also portrayed the Klingon Garkog in "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "Subspace Rhapsody".
5. Main navigator on USS Enterprise under Captain Kirk

Answer: Hikaru Sulu

Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu served as the helmsman on the USS Enterprise under Captain Kirk. Later in his career, he became the captain of the USS Excelsior (NCC-2000).

Sulu was also a weapons specialist. He trained in fencing and once terrorized the crew of the Enterprise by chasing them through the corridors shirtless with his foil. ("Star Trek" episode "The Naked Time")

Sulu was portrayed/voiced in various "Star Trek" productions by George Takei. His birth name was Hosato. But his father was an anglophile, and called him George, after King George VI of the United Kingdom, who was coronated shortly before Takai's birth. He and his family were among thousands of Japanese-Americans who were unjustly interred during World War II.

The character Sulu wasn't given the first name Hikaru until the "Star Trek" novel "The Entropy Effect". This name became canon when he used the name in "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country".
6. Operations officer on USS Athena

Answer: Hayden Thriss

Lieutenant Hayden Thriss was an operations officer on the USS Athena under Captain Ake. He was on the bridge of the Athena on its maiden voyage to Earth. ("Star Trek: Starfleet Academy" episode "Kids These Days")

Hayden Thriss was portrayed by Ken Barnett.
7. Communications officer on USS Enterprise (NX-01) under Captain Archer

Answer: Hoshi Sato

Ensign Hoshi Sato was the communications officer aboard the USS Enterprise (NX-01). She was asked by Captain Archer to join his crew as the Enterprise was headed to parts of the galaxy previously unexplored, and she had an uncanny knack for understanding new languages with minimal input.

Hoshi Sato's mirror-universe counterpart was also a communications officer, this time aboard the ISS Enterprise. She had originally been the lover of Commander Archer, but became Captain Maximilian Forrest's woman (their term, not mine) when Forrest was promoted. When Archer took command, she then gravitated back to him. After they were successful in stealing the USS Defiant - a ship from the prime universe and a century more advanced - she seduced Archer's personal guard, Travis Mayweather, into poisoning Archer and assuming command of the Defiant. As they entered orbit of Earth, she ordered Admiral Gardner to surrender, proclaiming herself as "Empress Sato".

Both versions of Hoshi Sato were portrayed by Linda Park.
8. 23rd century con artist and smuggler

Answer: Harry Mudd

Harcourt Fenton "Harry" Mudd was a con artist and smuggler in the mid-23rd century, or as James Kirk described him: "Harcourt Fenton Mudd. Thief... Swindler and con man... Liar and rogue."

Harry Mudd was portrayed by two actors: three times by Roger C. Carmel in "Star Trek" episodes "Mudd's Women" and "I, Mudd" and "Star Trek: The Animated Series" episode "Mudd's Passion", and by Rainn Wilson in "Star Trek: Discovery" episodes "Choose Your Pain" and "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad".
9. First captain of the USS Enterprise-B

Answer: John Harriman

Captain John Harriman was the captain of the USS Enterprise-B on its maiden voyage out of drydock. On this voyage were three officers from the USS Enterprise (no A, B, C, or D): Kirk, Chekov, and Scott. While they were out, they got a distress call from two ships that were carrying El-Aurian refugees. They were trapped in a phenomenon called The Nexus. Unfortunately, Harriman stated that items such as photon torpedoes, tractor beam, or a medical staff were not on board, which would have helped in the rescue efforts; they wouldn't be delivered until the following Tuesday. Nonetheless, they did their best to rescue the refugees. They rescued one ship's passengers, but the other was destroyed. In doing this, the Enterprise-B also became trapped. Scott devised a way to alter the deflector to help them escape. Kirk went below decks to make the necessary changes. Their modifications worked, except that a last tendril of energy hit the Enterprise-B right where Kirk was in deflector control. He was believed to be killed. ("Star Trek: Generations")

Captain John Harriman was played by Alan Ruck. Ruck is known for playing Cameron Frye in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and Stuart Mondek in "Spin City".
10. Exobiologist who confirmed the existence of the Borg

Answer: Magnus Hansen

Magnus Hansen was an exobiologist who, with his wife Erin, set out to find and research a then-rumored cybernetic species, the Borg. They petitioned the Federation Council on Exobiology to support a research mission to search for this species. They were approved and were given the USS Raven for their mission.

When they set out from Deep Space 4 station with their young daughter Annika in tow, they deviated from their flight plan, ignored orders to return, and crossed into Romulan space. About eight months later, they found a Borg cube and followed it into a transwarp conduit, ending up in the Delta Quadrant.

They developed technologies that effectively cloaked them from the Borg, which allowed them to beam onto cubes, as well as beam regenerating drones to the Raven for study. But then disaster struck. Their ship's adaptive shielding failed for just 13.2 seconds, allowing the Borg to detect them and assess them as a threat. The Borg caught the Raven and assimilated all three of them. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "The Raven"). After maturing, Annika became Seven of Nine.

After Seven regained her humanity on USS Voyager, she was forced to choose between returning to the Borg or watching as Voyager's crew was assimilated. Once there with the Borg, the Borg Queen tried to entice her to rejoin the collective by showing her Magnus, who was now a drone on her ship. Voyager was able to rescue her from the queen's ship, while also destroying it. It is unknown if Magnus-drone was still on board that ship when it was destroyed. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Dark Frontier")

Magnus Hansen was portrayed by two actors: David Anthony Marshall in flashback scenes in "The Raven" and by Kirk Baily in "Dark Frontier".
11. Silicon-based life form, mother of her race

Answer: Horta

The Horta was the last of her silicon-based species which lived on Janus VI, a class-F planet. Janus VI was found to be rich in minerals, and so a Federation mining colony was established underground. The Horta was content to share the planet with the humans, until they reached a lower level of the planet that housed a chamber which held eggs of the next generation of her species. Since the eggs just looked like silicon sphere, the miners took no care in whether they damaged them. This angered the Horta.

She began attacking miners who were in the lower level, in hopes of scaring the humans away from her eggs. This wasn't working, so she attacked and killed a guard at the colony's nuclear reactor. She then took a circulating pump from the reactor, which would make it go critical and irradiate the colony.

Security parties from the USS Enterprise were searching the mines for whatever had been killing colonists. Kirk and Spock managed to find the Horta, which they were able to wound with their superior phasers. They pursued and were eventually caught up with her. In her injured state, Spock was able to approach her and briefly mind-meld with her. After this, she absorbed enough information to be able to write, "NO KILL I", on some nearby rocks. Spock they re-melded with her, and found out the true situation, that the miners were destroying her species' eggs. They relayed this to the miners, and they agreed to stay away from the Horta's eggs. She also led Kirk to the stolen pump, and Dr. McCoy was able to patch up her phaser wound with silicon cement. ("Star Trek" episode "Devil in the Dark")

The Horta was performed by stuntman and monster costume maker János Prohászka. Prohászka also designed the Horta costume. When he presented the costume to episode writer Gene Coon and assistant director and producer Robert Justman, Coon was unimpressed. He asked Justman when Prohászka left to put the costume on, "Bob, why are you wasting time with this?" But then Prohászka came back in costume and skittered around the room. He then made some up-and-down movements, grunted, then skittered away - leaving behind a large white sphere. He basically acted out the Horta laying an egg. "Great!" Coon exclaimed, "It's perfect! Just what we need." He then went back to his office and finished writing the script for "Devil in the Dark".
12. Former Maquis, became crewman on USS Voyager

Answer: Hogan

Hogan had been a crewmember on Chakotay's Maquis ship, the Val Jean, when it was taken to the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker. Upon being stranded there, he and the other Maquis became crew on USS Voyager. He served as an engineer.

Hogan was initially critical of Captain Janeway's leadership. He unwittingly became an asset to Jonas, who was in contact with Seska after she was revealed to be a Cardassian spy and gone over to the Kazon-Nistrim.

When the Kazon-Nistrim were successful in hijacking Voyager and stranding its crew on Hanon IV, Hogan and Neelix were assigned to look for materials needed for survival. He noted a system of caves that seemed artificial to Neelix. Neelix then saw a collection of animal bones near the mouth of the cave, and suggested to Hogan to gather them. Hogan reluctantly started to gather them. But moments later, he was attacked by a large land eel, dragged deeper into the cave, and killed, only leaving behind a piece of his uniform. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Basics, Part II")

Years later, a Voth scientist, Forra Gegen, found Hogan's remains. He found genetic similarities between Hogan's DNA and Voth DNA, supporting his hypothesis that the Voth were not native to the Delta Quadrant, but from a distant world. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Distant Origin")

Hogan was portrayed by Simon Billig. Billig had unsuccessfully auditioned for a role as a Klingon on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine". However, he was called back to audition for "Star Trek: Voyager" and got the recurring part of Hogan, which he played for 8 episodes.
13. Off-shift helmsman/navigator on USS Enterprise under Captain Kirk

Answer: Hadley

Lieutenant Hadley was a helmsman/navigator who served on the USS Enterprise under Captain Kirk.

Hadley was portrayed by William Blackburn. Blackburn appeared 64 times (uncredited) on "Star Trek" and once on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Trials and Tribble-ations" in archive footage. He also appeared as: a Starbase 11 orderly ("Star Trek" episode "The Menagerie, Part I"), the White Rabbit ("Star Trek" episode "Shore Leave"), the Gorn captain ("Star Trek" episode "Arena"), an Organian villager ("Star Trek" episode "Errand of Mercy"), a Feeder of Vaal ("Star Trek" episode "The Apple"), Hadley's mirror-universe doppelgänger ("Star Trek" episode "Mirror, Mirror"), a Tellarite aide ("Star Trek" episode "Journey to Babel"), a McKinley Rocket Base technician ("Star Trek" episode "Assignment: Earth"), and a Gideon native ("Star Trek" episode "The Mark of Gideon").
14. First captain of the USS Columbia (NX-02)

Answer: Erika Hernandez

Captain Erika Hernandez was assigned to captain the second warp-5 capable ship, the USS Columbia (NX-02). She had been romantically linked to Jonathan Archer, but he ended the relationship when he was promoted to captain.

Erika Hernandez was portrayed by Ada Maris.
15. 20th century computer tech businessman

Answer: Henry Starling

Henry Starling was a man in the right place at the right time. He was camping in the High Sierras in 1967 when he witnessed the crash of the Federation timeship Aeon, which originated in the 29th century. Its pilot, Captain Braxton, had used emergency transport to evacuate his ship before it crashed. Starling took possession of the Aeon and analyzed its 29th-century technology. He used the knowledge he gained to start the technology boom of the late 20th century.

Henry Starling created a company, Chronowerx, and used the Aeon's equipment to introduce more and more advancements in technology. But by 1996, he had run out of innovations he could "invent", and instead decided to use the Aeon to travel to the 29th century to get more technology, then bring it back to the 20th century to profit from it. However, he didn't know how to properly fly the ship, so his attempt to take the Aeon to the future destroyed Earth's solar system.

It was this disaster that prompted Captain Braxton to go back in time and stop the disaster. However, he had analyzed the debris of the solar system and found evidence that USS Voyager was somehow involved, so he decided to destroy Voyager in the 24th century. Voyager fought back and caused both the Aeon and Voyager to fall back into the time vortex. Braxton's ship went back to 1967, but Voyager only went as far back as 1996, both arriving near Earth. Voyager sent an away team down to try and locate the timeship. Their investigations led them to discover Henry Starling's exploitation of the Aeon and his plans to travel to the future. They also find Captain Braxton, now 29 years older and living as a homeless man. He explains his mistake and how it created a self-causal time loop. Knowing that Starling can't be allowed to try and travel to the 29th century, Voyager stops Starling just before he entered a time vortex by torpedoing the Aeon, killing him.

Shortly after this, a younger version of Braxton appeared, who had no knowledge of crashing on 20th-century Earth or living there for three decades. He had come to the 20th century because the Temporal Integrity Commission of the 29th century detected Voyager in the 20th century. He is there to bring Voyager back to the 24th century, but unfortunately, to the Delta Quadrant, where they'd been before. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episodes "Future's End, Part I" and "Future's End, Part II")

Henry Starling was portrayed by Ed Begley, Jr. Begley is known for his roles as Dr. Ehrlich on "St. Elsewhere" and Dr. Grant Linkletter on "Young Sheldon".
