Estimated time: 3 mins.
Lela was the first host of the Dax symbiont. She was born in 2112, and joined with Dax in the Earth year 2160. She was a famous legislator and one of the first female council members of the Trill government. She had a son named Ahjess.
She had a habit of holding her hands behind her back because male colleagues teased her about her expressive gestures. This habit was picked up by both Jadzia and Ezri.
She died at the age of 114. The Dax symbiont was then joined with Tobin.
During Jadzia Dax's zhian'tara (where Jadzia met Dax's former hosts by them inhabiting her friends), Lela was embodied into Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor).
("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episodes "Facets", "Equilibrium", "You Are Cordially Invited", "Rejoined", "Once More Unto the Breach")
2. Tobin
Tobin was the second host of the Dax symbiont. He had several children, one of whom - Raifi - caused him difficulties over the years. Tobin was not a good disciplinarian of his offspring.
Tobin was a vegetarian and was a nail-biter. He was an engineer who had intimate knowledge of phase coil inverters.
During Jadzia Dax's zhian'tara, Tobin was embodied into Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney). During Curzon's zhian'tara, Curzon got Tobin drunk for the first time in his life.
("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episodes "Facets", "The Siege", "Invasive Procedures", "Explorers", "Nor the Battle to the Strong", "Afterimage", "The Wire", "The Siege of AR-558")
3. Emony
Emony was the third host of the Dax symbiont. She was a mother of at least one child.
She was an Olympic gymnast in the 23rd century. She found that her concentration and physical coordination improved after she was joined with Dax. In the 2240s, she was a gymnastics competition judge at the University of Mississippi, where she met Leonard McCoy. She felt he would become a great doctor, because as she said, "[McCoy] had the hands of a surgeon".
During Jadzia Dax's zhian'tara, Emony was embodied into Leeta (Chase Masterson). Emony remarked that Leeta's body was in excellent shape because she could easily perform gymnastic moves.
After Ezri was joined to Dax, she once thought she was being over-emotional because of "the Emony" in her.
("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episodes "Facets", "The Nagus", "Rejoined", "Afterimage", "Take Me out to the Holosuite", "Trials and Tribble-ations", "Shadows and Symbols")
4. Audrid
Audrid was the fourth host of the Dax symbiont. She was the head of the Trill Symbiosis Commission and had two children: Neema and Gran.
When Neema was six, she was hospitalized for two weeks with Rugalan fever. Audrid spent the entire time by her bedside, reading seventeen volumes of "Down the River Light" to her, even though she was unconscious. Sadly, fifteen years later, the two of them were not on speaking terms and ended up not seeing each other for eight years.
Audrid died in 2284.
During Jadzia Dax's zhian'tara, Audrid was embodied into Quark (Armin Shimerman). Jadzia neglected to tell him that he would be embodying a female.
("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episodes "Facets", "Prodigal Daughter", "Nor the Battle to the Strong")
5. Torias
Torias was the fifth host of the Dax symbiont. He was a pilot in the 23rd century. He was married to another joined Trill, Nilani Kahn.
Before he had been joined for a year, he was killed in a shuttlecraft accident in 2285. Later, host Ezri said, "I still remember the last few seconds before the crash." She credits this memory for why she always got spacesick.
During Jadzia Dax's zhian'tara, Torias was embodied into Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig). Torias indulged a bit too much on fattening food while in Julian, so Jadzia cautioned him to be more respectful of Julian's body.
("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episodes "Facets", "Rejoined", "Equilibrium", "Afterimage", "Shadows and Symbols")
6. Joran
Joran was the sixth host of the Dax symbiont, though he was once rejected from the program. He was a musician, but sadly had a volatile temperament and a cold personality. Once joined, he also became a murderer, killing the doctor who first recommended his removal from the program. He killed two others in addition to the doctor.
Because of the unfortunate events with Joran, Dax was removed from Joran, which killed him. Dax was then implanted into Curzon, with a memory block to protect him and future hosts from memories of Joran. Records of his joining were purged, and the events of Torias' death were changed to state that he was in a coma for six months before dying in 2286.
The memory block started to erode in 2371. At first, it manifested in Jadzia suddenly knowing how to play piano, even though none of her previous hosts had musical talent. But slowly, the memories started to be traumatic to Jadzia. The block was removed so that Jadzia could reconcile the memories of Joran. Joran's joining was still kept a secret from the public, because it proved that being joined was possible more widely than previously believed. This would make the symbionts a commodity rather than an honor.
During Jadzia Dax's zhian'tara, Joran was embodied into Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks). Because of the dangers of Joran, the ritual was performed in a holding cell.
After Ezri was joined to Dax, a murderer was terrorizing Deep Space 9. Ezri performed the Rite of Emergence in order to communicate with Joran, in order to help her solve the murders. Once she did, she took Joran back into her deep memories, with the caution that now Joran was just as much a part of her as the other hosts.
("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episodes "Equilibrium", "Field of Fire", "Facets")
7. Curzon
Curzon was the seventh host of the Dax symbiont. He was the host for 81 years, and the past host that "Star Trek" viewers knew the most about.
He was a top ambassador of the Federation in the 23rd century. At the Korvat negotiations, Curzon became friends with three Klingon warriors: Kang, Kor, and Koloth. Kang's firstborn son was named Dax, and Curzon was his godfather. Later, the three warriors were part of a mission to apprehend a criminal - The Albino - who was raiding Klingon colonies. The three were successful in breaking up The Albino's power base, but he himself escaped custody. As revenge, the Albino managed to infect the three warriors' firstborn sons with a genetic virus that slowly killed the children, including Kang's son Dax. These three, along with Curzon, swore a blood oath to track down and kill The Albino.
The Albino managed to keep ahead of the Klingons' pursuit for decades. After Dax is passed on to Jadzia, Kang found The Albino. He gathered Kor and Koloth on Deep Space 9 to enlist them in completing their blood oath. Although initially hesitant, Jadzia Dax asked to accompany them, as she still felt the hurt of losing a godson. After some debate, Kang accepted Jadzia to come with them.
In infiltrating The Albino's current compound, Koloth is killed, and The Albino mortally wounds Kang. As he turns away, he finds Jadzia holding a bat'leth at his throat. She informs him that she is now Dax, but he smirks and claims that she doesn't have the resolve to actually kill him. She hesitates, which gave the wounded Kang the opportunity to stab The Albino to death. Kang thanks Jadzia for letting him be the one to kill The Albino. He then dies.
Curzon died while performing jamaharon on Risa, with a Risian named Arandis.
During Jadzia Dax's zhian'tara, Curzon was embodied by Odo (Rene Auberjonois). This embodiment was unique, being with a Changeling. Curzon-Odo used Odo's shapeshifting to actually look Trill, and used the opportunity to reunite with his friend and mentee Benjamin Sisko. He wanted to stay separate from the symbiont, living his life again through Odo. But after talking with Jadzia, Curzon-Odo admitted his love for Jadzia, which was part of the reason he initially rejected Jadzia from the symbiosis program. He then returned to the symbiont Dax.
("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episodes "Facets", "The Emissary", "Blood Oath", "Let He Who Is Without Sin...")
8. Jadzia
Jadzia was the eighth host of the Dax symbiont. Before applying to be a host, Jadzia attended and graduated from Starfleet Academy, with premier distinctions in astrophysics, exoarchaeology, exobiology and zoology.
She was initially rejected for joining by none other than field docent Curzon Dax, who said the reason was that Jadzia lacked purpose. Jadzia re-applied that same year and was accepted by a different woman docent. Her initial rejection haunted her, and is why she didn't have positive feelings about returning to Trill. It wasn't until her zhian'tara that she learned that Curzon had fallen in love with her.
After being joined to Dax, Jadzia's training and experiences made the adjustment to having seven different lifetimes of memories and experiences relatively easy. The once shy, hardworking, and dedicated Jadzia became a lively, confident, and outgoing person with a passion for life.
In 2369, she was assigned to Deep Space 9 as science officer. It was here that her memories as Curzon Dax helped re-ignite her friendship with Benjamin Sisko, who immediately accepted her friendship by referring to Jadzia as "Old Man", his nickname for Curzon. (He later called Ezri Dax "Old Man" as well.)
Jadzia held her zhian'tara on the station, enlisting her new friends to embody her past hosts. The zhian'tara is performed by Trill's with symbionts so that they could understand their past selves better.
Jadzia met, fell in love with, and married Worf. Her memories of Curzon's love of Klingon culture most likely drew her to Worf. After consulting Dr. Bashir, he administered ovarian resequencing enzymes which would allow her to conceive with her husband. In gratitude, she went to the station's Bajoran Temple to thank the Prophets. But while there, a Pah-wraith-possessed Dukat appeared to destroy the Orb that was kept in the temple. He attacked and killed her with powers given to him by the Pah-wraiths.
In 2375, Worf dedicated a mission to her to destroy the Dominion shipyards at Monac IV. This was to ease her entrance into Sto-Vo-Kor.

9. Verad
Verad was a Trill communications clerk who had been rejected by the Symbiosis Commission. He still had the desire to be joined, and bitterly resented his rejection. He met and fell in love with a Tyran woman - Mareel - who helped him plan to steal Dax from Jadzia and escape to the Gamma Quadrant via the Bajoran wormhole.
With the hired muscle of two Klingon mercenaries, Verad tricked Quark into getting him onto Deep Space 9 when it had been mostly evacuated due to a plasma storm. By threat, they had Odo put himself in an escape-proof container. Then, by threatening to kill the crew still on the station, Verad extorted Jadzia to give up Dax and have it implanted in him.
Now calling himself Verad Dax, he became more confident and intelligent. He also felt distant from Mareel, and planned to go to the Gamma Quadrant without her. He tried to become friends with Sisko, using Curzon's memories. After some commiseration, Sisko asked Verad to give Dax back to Jadzia, as she would soon die without him. Verad refused, so Sisko terminated their friendship.
After Dr. Bashir and Quark were able to distract and knock out one of the Klingon muscles, the crew was able to re-take the station and to have Dax returned back to Jadzia. The removal of the symbiont was traumatic to Verad, making him feel strange and empty. Mareel assured Verad that he wasn't alone, that she would always be with him. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Invasive Procedures")
Verad was not considered one of Dax's official hosts. It was implied that Verad survived the removal of Dax because it was only in him for a few hours. Jadzia said after the symbiont's return to her, "Everything he thought... everything he did... and it's so... sad. I guess he'll always be with me now..."
Verad was portrayed by John Glover. Glover is known for his many roles: Daniel Clamp in "Gremlins 2: The New Batch" and Lionel Luthor in the series "Smallville".
10. Ezri
Ezri was the ninth host of the Dax symbiont. She was not enrolled in the symbiosis program. She was joined with Dax when the symbiont was in distress on its way back to Trill aboard the USS Destiny after Jadzia was murdered. Ezri was the only Trill on board. So after a 15-minute lecture from the ship's surgeon, Dax was implanted in her. She awoke to be a completely different person, or "eight different people" as she told Ben Sisko.
Ensign Ezri Tegan had trained to be a ship's counselor. Once she became Ezri Dax, she continued this path, but chose to be the new counselor on Deep Space 9. This initially was very uncomfortable for Worf, Jadzia Dax's widower. He was cold to her, considering Ezri an affront to the memory of Jadzia. But he soon realized that his actions were more offensive, and his relationship with her thawed.
("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episodes "Image in the Sand", "Shadows and Symbols", "Afterimage")
11. Illa
Professor Illa Dax was a Cardassian-Trill hybrid, who taught the Confronting the Unexplainable advanced seminar at Starfleet Academy in the 32nd century. It's unknown how many hosts there were between Ezri and Illa, only that it's been eight centuries between the two hosts.
Illa Dax was portrayed by Tawny Newsome. Newsome is best known as the voice/portrayer of Ensign/Lieutenant j.g. Beckett Mariner in "Star Trek: Lower Decks" and "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "Those Old Scientists".
