Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Aspiring journalist who grew up on Deep Space 9

Answer: Jake Sisko

Jake and his father, Commander (later Captain) Benjamin Sisko moved to Deep Space 9 when the Cardassians left Bajor and abandoned their ore processing space station, Terok Nor. He grew up there, befriending a Ferengi teen - Nog - and helping him to learn to read. Instead of following his father's footsteps and joining Starfleet, he became a journalist covering the events at Deep Space 9.

Jake was played by Cirroc Lofton throughout the series "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and Tony Todd as an adult Jake in the episode "The Visitor". Tony Todd also appeared as Worf's younger brother Kurn in episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine"; also as the Alpha-Hirogen in "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Prey".
2. Bajoran Starfleet officer who died on undercover mission

Answer: Sito Jaxa

Cadet Sito Jaxa was a Bajoran member of Nova Squadron, an elite flight team at Starfleet Academy, along with four other cadets, including Wesley Crusher.

The five members of this squadron wanted to impress the audience at the graduation commencement by performing the Kolvoord Starburst, a dangerous and prohibited flight stunt. While attempting this at practice, the team crashed and one of the squad, Joshua Albert, died. The leader of the squadron, Nicholas Locarno, convinced the surviving members to lie about what they were attempting. However, the evidence was mounting that they were hiding the truth. After the board of inquiry simply revoked their flight privileges and gave them formal reprimands, Crusher admitted what they were really attempting. The academy was going to then expel the squadron members, until Locarno stepped up and took full responsibility for the squadron trying the Kolvoord Starburst. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The First Duty")

Once Sito graduated, she was assigned to USS Enterprise-D, under Captain Picard. Secretly, Picard wanted her to have an opportunity to prove herself as a capable Starfleet officer. But he did this antagonistically, hoping that she would stand up for herself. She initially did not, not understanding why she would get duty on the Enterprise-D if Picard didn't want her. But then Lt. Worf invited her to a gik'tal challenge, which was an unfair exercise. She complained this to Worf, which he then tied this unfairness to what Picard had chided her for earlier. This gave her the courage to return to Picard and argue that she'd already been punished for her actions at Starfleet Academy. This proved to Picard that she was ready for service. He then presented her with a volunteer mission: to escort a double-agent Cardassian back to Cardassian space, pretending to be his Bajoran prisoner in case he was intercepted. She was then to return to Federation space via an escape pod. But after waiting near the border, the Enterprise detected debris that was consistent with the remains of an escape pod. The Enterprise later intercepted a communique that an escape pod was detected and destroyed by the Cardassians. Picard noted that she was the finest example of a Starfleet officer and a young woman of remarkable courage and strength of character. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Lower Decks")

Sito Jaxa was portrayed by Shannon Fill in both appearances on "Star Trek: The Next Generation". She returned to provide Sito's voice in a flashback on "Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "Old Friends, New Planets".
3. Vulcan ambassador to the Federation Coucil (23rd-24th century)

Answer: Sarek

Sarek was the ambassador from Vulcan on the Federation Council. He served in this capacity in the 23rd and 24th centuries, until his medical condition with Bendii Syndrome incapacitated him. ("Star Trek" episode "Journey to Babel", "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episodes "Sarek", "Unification I")

He had three children: Sybok (with an unnamed Vulcan princess ("Star Trek V: The Final Frontier")); Spock (with was Amanda Grayson from Earth ("Star Trek" episode "Journey to Babel", movie "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home")); and Michael Burnham, whose parents were believed slaughtered by raiding Klingons and was then raised as a foster daughter with Amanda.

He had three wives through his lifetime: the unnamed Vulcan princess; Amanda Grayson; and Perrin, another Earth woman he married in the 24th century and who nursed him through his final days before dying of the effects of Bendii Syndrome.

Sarek was initially portrayed by veteran actor Mark Lenard in the TV productions "Star Trek", "Star Trek: The Animated Series", "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and in the movies "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock", "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", and "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country".

Sarek was portrayed by James Frain in the first two seasons of "Star Trek: Discovery".

Sarek was portrayed by Jonathan Simpson in a flashback scene in "Star Trek: The Final Frontier".
4. Cardassian spy on Chakotay's Maquis crew

Answer: Seska

Seska was a Cardassian spy who was disguised as a Bajoran and had infiltrated the Maquis. She became especially close to Chakotay. She was on Chakotay's ship, the Val Jean, when it was seized by the Caretaker and transported to the Delta Quadrant.

When the Val Jean was destroyed, its crew, including Seska, became a part of USS Voyager's crew. She functioned there as crewman. ("Star Trek: Voyager")

She began communicating with the Kazon, an aggressive Delta Quadrant race. She smuggled replicator technology to them, in violation of the Prime Directive. The Kazon's attempt to use it caused an explosion which killed the Kazon using it. As Voyager was investigating how the Kazon got the tech, Seska worked to hide her involvement with its acquisition. She got injured in the attempt, and the Doctor's examination of her revealed her true nature as a Cardassian. She managed to escape Voyager by transferring to a Kazon raider. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "State of Flux")

After she escaped, she became the consort of Maje Culluh of the Kazon-Nistrim. Her strong personality was at odds with the Kazon, a heavily patriarchal society. She helped plan attacks against USS Voyager, at one point gaining control of it and marooning its crew on a barely habitable planet, Hanon IV. But through actions by Tom Paris (who had left Voyager on a covert mission), the Doctor, and Lon Suder, Voyager returned to Hanon IV and recovered the crew. In the re-taking of Voyager, Seska is injured and dies. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episodes "Basics, Part I" and "Basics, Part II")

Although the real Seska is dead, she has a resurrection of sorts. When Voyager encounters a temporal distortion, it causes the ship to be shifted into different times of its existence: the Bridge is still in the time before the Caretaker seized them, Sick Bay is in a time before the Doctor got a mobile emitter, Stellar Cartography was decades in the future, and Engineering was in the time when the Kazon had seized the ship in "Basics". ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Shattered")

Seska was portrayed by Martha Hackett.
5. Spock's older half-brother

Answer: Sybok

Sybok was the eldest son of Sarek and a Vulcan princess (presumedly his first betrothed wife). Sybok was a revolutionary, one of the V'tosh ka'tur, who sought experience and knowledge that were forbidden by Vulcan beliefs. He embraced his emotions rather than suppress them. (movie "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier")

Sybok was portrayed by Tony Award-nominated actor Laurence Luckinbill.
6. Half-Vulcan/ half-Human first officer under Captain Kirk

Answer: Spock

Spock was the half-Vulcan/half-human son of Ambassador Sarek and wife Amanda Grayson.

Spock was killed off in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" because actor Leonard Nimoy wanted to move on from the role. But his enjoyment in making "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan" and the offer to let him direct the next two movies brought him back.

Spock was primarily portrayed by Leonard Nimoy in "Star Trek", "Star Trek: The Animated Series", "Star Trek: The Next Generation", the first six "Star Trek" movies, and the Kelvin-timeline movie "Star Trek".

Spock was portrayed by Zachary Quinto in the Kelvin-timeline "Star Trek" movies.

Spock was portrayed by Ethan Peck in "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds".

Young Spock was voiced by Billy Simpson in "Star Trek: The Animated Series" episode "Yesteryear".
7. Human who was assimilated by the Borg as a child

Answer: Seven of Nine

Seven of Nine was a human child named Annika Hansen. She was traveling with her parents, who were on an independent research mission to study the Borg. They eventually found a Borg cube and followed it through a transwarp conduit into the Delta Quadrant. They had developed a means to cloak themselves from notice by the Borg, allowing them to beam in and out of Borg ships to do their research.

However, they ran into a subspace particle storm that damaged their special shielding. The Borg saw them and determined that they were a threat. The family was then assimilated. Annika was placed in a maturation chamber for five years, with the mental anguish of being assimilated replaced with order.

When USS Voyager discovered the Borg were at war with a transdimensional species (only referred to as Species 8472), they teamed up with the Borg in developing a weapon to use against them. To aid in this, Seven was assigned to interact with Voyager. After an attack by 8472, the Borg cube that Voyager was traveling with was destroyed. Seven beamed Janeway, herself, and a few Borg to Voyager to escape and keep developing the weapon.

Captain Janeway soon discovered that the Borg were the initial aggressors in their war with Species 8472. She enacted a contingency plan to sever Seven from the collective. With her being disconnected, her human physiology started to re-activate. She spent the next three years on Voyager as they headed back to Earth. ("Star Trek: Voyager")

In later years, she worked with the Fenris Rangers, a peacekeeping force that worked near the Romulan Neutral Zone. She worked with a woman, Bjayzl, who betrayed her. She was actually a dealer in black market Borg machinery. She learned of the other Borg that had returned with Voyager, Icheb. He was a lieutenant on the USS Coleman. Bjayzl lured Lieutenant Icheb into a trap, where he was strapped down and his remaining Born implants were forcibly removed. Seven came to rescue him, but she was too late. Icheb was in unbearable pain, and he begged Seven to kill him. Crying and cradling him, she shot him with her phaser. ("Star Trek: Picard")

Seven of Nine was portrayed by Jeri Ryan from the third season finale through seasons four through seven of "Star Trek: Voyager" and in "Star Trek: Picard".
8. Captain of USS Titan-A; held grudge against Picard (as Locutus)

Answer: Liam Shaw

Captain Liam Shaw was the captain of the USS Titan-A. Early in his career, he was an engineering ensign aboard the USS Constance. The Constance was engaged in the Battle of Wolf 359. Shaw was the last of only ten survivors to get aboard a life pod and escape with their lives. He, like other survivors of that battle, blamed Picard - who had been assimilated by the Borg and named Locutus - for the defeat of the Federation fleet that had engaged the Borg. He said of Locutus, "[he's] the only Borg so deadly, they gave him a goddamn name". ("Star Trek: Picard" episode "No Win Scenario")

Captain Liam Shaw was portrayed by Todd Stashwick.
9. Junior officer on USS Discovery

Answer: Sylvia Tilly

Sylvia Tilly was a cadet who was assigned to the USS Discovery in the mid-23rd century. She was aboard when the Federation-Klingon war ignited. In recognition for her role in ending the conflict, she was awarded the Starfleet Medal of Honor and an ensign's commission. ("Star Trek: Discovery" episode "Will You Take My Hand?")

Ensign Tilly was part of the Discovery crew when they chose to time-travel to the far future so that information on their computers could never be accessed by Section 31's artificial intelligence threat assessment system. ("Star Trek: Discovery" episode "Such Sweet Sorrow" part 2)

Sylvia Tilly was portrayed by Mary Wiseman.
10. Section 31 agent

Answer: Luther Sloan

Luther Sloan was an agent of Section 31, a top-secret division of Starfleet Intelligence. Section 31's actions were morally questionable, though they believed they were necessary for the protection of the Federation.

Sloan approached Dr. Julian Bashir, believing that with Bashir's augmented genetics, he would be an asset to Section 31. He tested Bashir's loyalty by surreptitiously beaming him into a holodeck and challenging his character. Bashir eventually discovered he was in a holodeck program. Sloan then revealed his true purpose and the existence of Section 31, and offered Bashir a position within it. Bashir declined, then later explained what he knew to Captain Sisko. Sisko realized the danger of such an organization within Starfleet. He ordered Bashir to accept Sloan's invitation if he ever made contact with him again. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Inquisition")

Sloan was portrayed by William Sadler. Sadler is known for his movie roles: Haywood in "The Shawshank Redemption", the Grim Reaper in "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey", and Colonel Stuart in "Die Hard 2".
11. Engineering chief on the USS Enterprise under Captain Kirk

Answer: Montgomery Scott

Montgomery Scott, nicknamed "Scotty", was the masterful chief engineer of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) under Captain James Kirk. He secretly overestimated any repair projects, so when he finished early, people would think of him as a miracle worker.

Montgomery Scott was portrayed by James Doohan in "Star Trek", "Star Trek: The Animated Series", "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Relics", and the first seven "Star Trek" movies.

Scott was portrayed by Simon Pegg in the Kelvin timeline "Star Trek" movies.

Scott was portrayed by Martin Quinn in "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds".
12. Andorian commander who called humans "pink skins"

Answer: Thy'lek Shran

Thy'lek Shran was an Andorian commander who had several encounters with the USS Enterprise (NX-01). Initially suspicious and adversarial, he slowly began to respect Captain Archer and humans in general. ("Star Trek: Enterprise")

Thy'lek Shran was played by the excellent actor Jeffrey Combs. Combs is well-known for portraying nearly a dozen characters in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", "Star Trek: Voyager", "Star Trek: Enterprise", and "Star Trek: Lower Decks".
13. Communications officer on USS Enterprise (NX-01)

Answer: Hoshi Sato

Ensign Hoshi Sato was the communications officer aboard the USS Enterprise (NX-01). She was asked by Captain Archer to join his crew, as the Enterprise was headed to parts of the galaxy previously unexplored, and she had an uncanny knack for understanding new languages with minimal input.

Hoshi Sato's mirror-universe counterpart was also a communications officer, this time aboard the ISS Enterprise. She had originally been the lover of Commander Archer, but became Captain Maximilian Forrest's woman (their term, not mine) when Forrest was promoted. When Archer took command, she then gravitated back to him. After they were successful in stealing the USS Defiant - a ship from the prime universe and a century more advanced - she seduced Archer's personal guard Travis Mayweather into poisoning Archer and assuming command of the Defiant. As they entered orbit of Earth, she ordered Admiral Gardner to surrender, proclaiming herself as "Empress Sato".

Both versions of Hoshi Sato were portrayed by Linda Park.
14. Bajoran security chief on USS Cerritos

Answer: Shaxs

Lieutenant Shaxs was a Bajoran security chief aboard the USS Cerritos. He was a resistance fighter during the Cardassian occupation of Bajor, teaming up with Kira Nerys on many missions.

He actually died on a mission to disable an attacking Pakled ship, where he saved Ensign Rutherford at his own expense. Not to worry, he came back from the dead, as a running joke. (Re: Spock in "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" and Dr. Hugh Culber in "Star Trek: Discovery".) Other Starfleet officers come back to life, and the writers thought they'd add onto the trope as a joke.

His go-to suggestion for tactical action is to eject the ship's warp core. This actually was the ideal action in one instance, when three Texas-class AI-driven ships were pursuing the Cerritos. By ejecting it, it acted as a mine, taking out two of the three ships chasing them and dropping them out of warp. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "The Stars At Night")

Shaxs is voiced by Fred Tatasciore, who also voices dozens of other incidental characters in "Star Trek: Lower Decks" and "Star Trek: Prodigy".
15. Cheery engineering officer with cybernetic implant

Answer: Samanthan Rutherford

Ensign (later lieutenant j.g.) Samanthan Rutherford was an engineering officer aboard the USS Cerritos. His closest friends were Brad Boimler, Beckett Mariner, and D'Vana Tendi.

He had a cybernetic implant installed on his head which was initially said to be a voluntary procedure he had done. However, it was slowly discovered that it was attached to him to help hide his memories. He had been aiding Les Buenamigo, working on the engines for Buenamigo's top-secret project: the Texas-class AI-driven starships. He had also been working on the AI programs for the new starships.

After he had the implant installed, he was re-assigned to the USS Cerritos. There he worked on a side project, developing a holographic training program which was designed to help with any Starfleet training. As part of the program, he created a character named Badgey (which was an anthropomorphic Starfleet badge) to interact with the user. While using this program with Tendi, he discovered that if safety protocols were off or disabled, Badgey became evil and would try to kill whatever user he saw. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "Terminal Provocations")

It was later discovered that the AI code that Rutherford wrote to create Badgey was nearly identical to the code he had written for the Texas-class project. So when Buenamigo turned the USS Aledo against the Cerritos, he gave it full autonomy. This was basically like turning off the safety protocols. After gaining autonomy, the Aledo turned against Buenamigo, shooting at his office on Douglas Station, killing him. It then activated its sister ships - USS Dallas and USS Corpus Christi - and then started pursuing the Cerritos. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "The Stars and Night")

Samanthan Rutherford was voiced by Eugene Cordero. Eugene Cordero performs voices for several incidental characters in "Star Trek: Lower Decks". He also guest starred on "The Good Place" as Jason Mendoza's friend Pillboi.
