When his wife, , died in a car accident, brain surgeon Dr. Brown left his career behind and moved from New York to Everwood, Colorado, with his children. Son, , was a talented pianist, while little was a baseball cap-wearing tomboy.

The town already had a doctor, named Abbott, who wasn't too happy that Dr. Brown was providing a free service. His daughter, , soon became friends with Dr. Brown's son, while her brother, the athletic but somewhat dim, was initially antagonistic towards him. We must not forget Dr. Abbott's wife, , who was also mayor of Everwood. Dr. Abbott's mother, , took a job with Dr. Brown, who set up his practice in the old train station.

Dr. Abbott's daughter hoped that Dr. Brown could be convinced to use his skill to operate on her boyfriend, Hart, who had been in a coma for months following an accident for which her brother blamed himself.

Other townspeople came and went during the first season, of course, but we have discussed here most of the main players.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Throughout the run of "Everwood" (2002-2006), Dr Andy Brown was portrayed by actor Treat Williams (1951-2023), whose acting career began in the 1970s and spanned movies and TV. During this first season, Andy was mostly concerned with settling his children in to their new life in the small Colorado town, that his wife had once mentioned having been storm-stayed in as a child. Having made a great deal of money in his previous medical life, he felt able to open a free practice there. It was not until later seasons that he became interested in romantic pursuits again.

Having passed away in the first episode, Julia Brown's appearances were few, occurring in flashbacks, or occasionally as figments of Andy's imagination (which gave his children some moments of concern). She was played by actress Brenda Strong, who is also known for being the narrator of "Desperate Housewives", Mary Alice Young, a character who also died in the first episode of her series.

Ephram Brown, played by Canadian actor Gregory Smith, was in his mid-teens when his mother died, on her way to watch him perform at a piano recital. For some time afterwards, Ephram stopped playing the piano, traumatised by both this and the sudden move from the big city to Everwood. Over the course of the series he picked up his music again, and it would play a big part in later seasons. Smith later starred in "Rookie Blue" (2010-2015).

Delia Brown was just a little girl of about ten years old at the beginning of the series, and during the first season was seen to worry about both her father and her brother, while making friends at her new school with some effort. Over the course of the series she matured to the point of celebrating her Bat Mitzvah in the final season. Vivien Cardone, who had previously appeared in the film "A Beautiful Mind" (2001) played Delia.

The fact that the train station, where Dr Brown had set up his practice, was across the street from his own, well-established practice was only one thing that annoyed Dr Harold Abbott. There was the matter of the parking spaces, as well, and the exodus of his patients to the free care offered by Dr Brown. Not only that, but Harold's father (also Harold) had been Everwood's doctor before him! Tom Amandes played Dr Harold Abbott as a somewhat straight-laced but ultimately kind-hearted man, devoted to his patients and his family. His relationship with Andy Brown grew more amicable over the course of the series. Amandes went on to play Abraham Lincoln in "Saving Lincoln" (2013).

Dr Abbott's daughter, Amy (Emily Van Camp), cultivated a relationship with Ephram Brown in the hope that he could influence his father to operate on her comatose boyfriend. In spite of this, she found herself having feelings for Ephram, as he did for her, but these were not to be fully acknowledged until later seasons. Van Camp, another Canadian in the cast, went on to be one of the stars of "The Resident" (2018-2023).

It is in the second season, during his high school graduation, that we learn that Bright Abbott's full name is "Harold Brighton Abbott III", meaning that it is in no way a comment on his intelligence, good or bad. Although Bright initially does not treat Ephram very well, he comes around and they eventually become friends. A good athlete, Bright struggles academically, which doesn't bode well for his college aspirations. He also blames himself for his friend Colin's accident, as he was driving the vehicle when it crashed. Chris Pratt played Bright, before going on to a stellar career in movies, such as "Guardians of the Galaxy" (several), "The Magnificent Seven" (2016), "Jurassic World", and "The Garfield Movie" (2024) - as Garfield!

Rose Abbott (Merrilyn Gann) might have had the hardest job in Everwood, as she not only had to run the town, but also keep her husband from having a meltdown over the new doctor, and deal with Amy's sadness over Colin and Bright's ability to get into minor scrapes, often. Her story was expanded in later seasons. Gann, yet another Canadian actress, has also appeared in "Marley & Me: The Puppy Years" (2011) and "Best in Show" (2000).

Another irritation to Dr Abbott was the fact that his mother, Edna Harper, took a job with Dr Brown as his practice nurse! She had been absent for much of his (and his sister's) childhood, serving in the armed forces, and still treated people as if they're all in the military, assigning ranks to all. She also rides a motorcycle, and, much to Harold's chagrin, married her current husband, Irv Harper (John Beasley) mere months after his father's passing. She's played by Debra Mooney, who has appeared in many television shows, including a recurring role in "Grey's Anatomy", as Dr Owen Hunt's mother, Evelyn.

Although he started the series in a coma, Mike Erwin did make a few appearances as Colin Hart in the first season of "Everwood", some in flashback, some in a hospital bed and eventually recovering after his first operation performed by Dr Brown. A second operation became necessary, and it wouldn't be until the first episode of the second season that its result would be revealed. Erwin has made guest appearances in a number of television programmes since "Everwood".
