Argus is one of the most generic choices for the Midlane role, as he is visually a very generic dwarven alchemist with ranged magic powers. Nothing much more to be said for him.
Countess, while uniquely not a ranged character, can move around a lane blindingly fast and has an Ability in Eventide which hits like a truck and is indeed ranged. Though she is technically a melee character, she checks off all the boxes needed to be a successful Midlaner.
Gadget is another straightforward choice for the role, with a kit featuring two throwables and a third ranged Ability which all do Magic damage. Though not literally a 'mage' in the strictest sense, Gadget does Magic damage just like mages do, and is classified by the game as a mage.
Gideon is basically Argus with a different colored hood. He is probably what non-"Predecessor" players would think of if you asked a random person to picture a mage, a wizard or such in their head.
Howitzer is, as the name implies, a ranged damage dealing machine. He's very similar to Gadget in that he wouldn't be considered a 'mage' as per what society likely envisions a 'mage' to be. But, he does plenty of ranged Magic damage so, pedantic or not, he's a mage per the game's standards.
Iggy & Scorch are an interesting case. They deal ranged Magic damage like you'd expect from a Midlaner, but they are also highly trap/defense oriented and are more bent on zoning out an area rather than slinging spells or explosives at someone. They can absolutely do exactly that with Molotov Cocktails, but are likelier to be seen playing defense with their Flame Turrets.
Lt. Belica, like Gadget and Howitzer, wields ranged weapons which are more like firearms than spells, magic or the such. Belica deals almost entirely Magic damage, ranged at that, and suits the Midlane as a mage all the same.
Morigesh is a hag specializing in ranged Magic damage. Though the way she dishes out this damage is unique and thematically exclusive to herself, she doesn't do anything structurally special that her peers do not. To the midlane Morigesh goes.
Neon is unique as a Midlaner for outputting lots of True damage. This can make her a bit difficult for Tanks, as no amount of Magic armor in the world will help against True damage, which ignores armor completely. Neon's opening damage output is a touch underwhelming, which is where her weakness lays: she is susceptible to simply getting out-DPSed by most other Midlaners. Her advantage is in beating up tanks and slower playstyles, but she gets out-bursted by just about anybody.
Renna is a slow starting mage, the single weakest in the game early on, who aims to take the game over late due to her Echoes of the Damned passive. To be effective, Renna must hold down the fort, bide her time, and accumulate Souls to become stronger.
The Fey is on the complete opposite end of Renna's spectrum, in that she is arguably the single mightiest Midlaner in the early going, who has a tendency to very slightly fall off later in the game.
Wraith is unique as the first Midlaner who was also formally recommended for the Carry role. Other Carry characters, like Sparrow and Twinblast, are used to a high extent in the Midlane, but they are not formally recommended for the role like Wraith is. Wraith is the absolute king of annoying the hell out of his enemy, as he has the longest effective range in the game with his signature 'Knock, Knock!' Ability. Combined with his Mystic Marksman augment that makes this Ability deal Magic damage, and Wraith is set to succeed as a Midlaner.
Generally, Midlaners need to deal ranged damage, and this ranged damage needs to be Ability-focused and typically Magical damage. Melee heroes, those who deal damage through Basic Attacks or those who deal Physical damage are usually excluded by default.
Adele, Boris, Grux, Kallari, Rampage, Serath and Wukong are melee characters which do Physical damage. They are remarkably poor fits for the Midlane.
Akeron, Aurora, Kwang, Mourn, Riktor, Sevarog and Steel may do mainly Magic damage, but they are also all melee heroes. As such, they are certain to get outpoked and spend all laning phase getting harassed at a distance by an actual Midlaner.
Eden, Grim.exe, Kira, Murdock and Revenant do lots of ranged damage, but they are all Basic Attack focused and, with the exception of Grim, they do Physical damage. Basic Attack builds are not optimal in the Midlane, because Midlaners will level up more quickly and thus, their Abilities will become stronger, faster than any other role. Ability focused builds dominate this lane, and will overpower Basic Attack builds in an even fight.
Dekker, Phase and Zinx indeed deal ranged damage, the ranged damage is Magical, and it's also largely based off of their Abilities. However, these are Support characters, so their damage scalings are quite poor. As such, they will simply be easily outgunned by actual Midlaners.
