Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Prior to the 2024 rebrand, the map of the London Overground looked like a plate of spaghetti, with all the lines consisting of which colour?

Answer: Orange

Prior to 2006, various companies had overground services in Greater London, but these were merged into a new unitary network called London Overground. The colour orange was used on the map as none of the underground lines used that colour with the exception of the East London line, which was itself absorbed into the overground.

The resulting transport map became a sea of orange which did indeed look like a plate of spaghetti. The 2024 rebrand did away with this mess.
2. What was the new name in 2024 of the overground line in east London between Romford and Upminster?

Answer: Liberty Line

The name of the Liberty Line was derived from the ancient name of the "Royal Liberty of Havering", and old moniker of the Borough of Havering. The residents were historically regarded as independent of the neighbouring colossus of London.

The Liberty Line is coloured grey on the map.
3. The Lioness Line, which runs from Euston to Watford, was named after players in what sport?

Answer: Football (Soccer)

The Lioness Line was renamed in 2024 after the England women's football team which won the European Championships in 2022. The line serves Wembley, where the final of that tournament took place, and is coloured yellow on the map.
4. The Mildmay Line connects Richmond and Clapham in southwest London to Stratford in east London. It is named after what type of institution?

Answer: Hospital

The Mildmay Line was renamed in 2024 after the Mildmay Mission Hospital. Located in Bethnal Green in East London, this hospital was founded in 1877, and, in the late 20th century, was the only hospital in the UK to specialize in the care and treatment of patients suffering from AIDS and other HIV-related diseases.

The Mildmay Line is coloured blue on the map.
5. The Gospel Oak to Barking line was renamed in 2024 with which "political" name?

Answer: Suffragette Line

The UK Suffragette movement of the early 20th century campaigned for votes for women. Votes were eventually granted to women over 30 in 1918, and then to women over 21, the same as men at the time, in 1928. East London was a major centre of this movement, and one of these women was Annie Hugget from Barking, the last-living suffragette, who died aged 104 in 1996.

The Suffragette Line is coloured green on the map.
6. What industry gives its name to the line between Liverpool Street and Chingford and Cheshunt, via the Lea Valley?

Answer: Weaving

The Weaver Line runs through east and north London, with its southern terminus at Liverpool Street. The weaving/textile industry was a major employer in much of the east end of London in the 19th/early 20th centuries.

The Weaver Line is coloured maroon on the map.
7. The Windrush Line was named in 2024 after which type of transportation?

Answer: Ship

The Windrush Line serves mainly south London. It was named after the "Empire Windrush", a ship which arrived at Tilbury in 1948 carrying over 1,000 immigrants, mostly from the West Indies. They moved to the area to fill gaps in the labour market caused by World War 2, although their arrival wasn't approved of by the government of the time.

The Windrush Line is coloured red on the map.
8. Given that some of the newly named lines share colours with existing underground lines, how are they depicted on a London Transport map?

Answer: Two parallel lines

To avoid confusion with underground lines that are of a solid colour, the lines of the new overground lines all consist of two parallel lines. The existing Docklands Light Railway (turquoise), Elizabeth Line/Crossrail (purple) and Tramlink (lime green) were already depicted in this way.
9. Some stations on the London Overground network are actually located outside Greater London, in which of these counties?

Answer: Hertfordshire

The Lioness Line has four stations in Hertfordshire - Carpenders Park, Bushey, Watford High Street and Watford Junction. The Weaver Line has two stations in Hertfordshire - Theobalds Grove and Cheshunt.

The underground does have a few stations in Buckinghamshire, but the overground doesn't extend to there.
10. Which station on the London Overground network is known as a skeleton station, with only a couple of trains serving it each day?

Answer: Battersea Park

Battersea Park is a station on the Windrush Line in south London, situated on a spur line between Clapham Junction and Wandsworth Road. It is only served by two trains a day on this line, but is also part of the national rail network where services are much more frequent.
