Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which company holds the annual "Roll up the Rim to Win" contest?

Answer: Tim Hortons

Tim Hortons is a Canadian institution, founded in Hamilton, Ontario in 1964. It was founded by, and named after, former NHL player Tim Horton and his partner Ron Joyce. After the chain received explosive success across Canada, it expanded in the United States. Tim Hortons commands approximately 62% percent of the Canadian coffee market, compared to Starbucks (in the number two position) at 7%.
2. When is the contest held each year?

Answer: March - May

This timing is key - it is the climax of the NHL season. March is the generally the last leg of regular season and the Stanley Cup playoffs start in April. By advertising in hockey rinks and on television during the games, this ensures that many more people than usual will be exposed to the contest.

However, it doesn't always start exactly on March 1 - it usually staged so that it starts on a Monday. For example, this year (2007) the first day of the contest was February 26.
3. What year did "Roll up the Rim" start?

Answer: 1987

This actually surprised me. The contest is as old as I am! But according to the company's website, 2007 is the 21st year that this contest has happened.
4. In Canada, which size of Tim Hortons cup does not apply to the contest?

Answer: small

This is because the small-sized cup is not manufactured in the special "Roll up the Rim" format. Tim Hortons locations in the United States do not have the Canadian small cup. If you order a small coffee in the US, you will get the equivalent of a Canadian medium, therefore in America, the "Roll up the Rim" contest applies to small, medium and large cups.
5. If you win a free coffee, you may substitute for a free hot chocolate or cappuccino.

Answer: True

The contest was originally intended to boost coffee sales, but was expanded to cover all hot beverages. This makes sense, because all the hot beverages come in the same kind of cup. So if it was a hot chocolate that you originally bought, you would get the same cup as if you would've ordered coffee. This is why "Roll up the Rim" does not apply to Iced Capps - they don't come in the usual cardboard cup.
Similarly a "win a donut" winner can be substituted for a muffin or a cookie.
6. No purchase is required to win in this contest.

Answer: True

I would've thought this was false, because obviously you need to buy a beverage to win, right? Nope. You can write to Tim Hortons headquarters in New Brunswick, or Maine in the US, and they will send you a contest cup, free of charge. But frankly, that seems more trouble than it's worth. Why not just go to your local Timmy's and spend a dollar or two on a coffee? Most people do every day anyways!
7. Which region receives the most of the cups manufactured for this contest?

Answer: Ontario

From the contest Rules and Regulations 2007 - A total of 270,237 cases of cups were produced for the "Roll up the Rim" contest (with 1000 cups in a case). It is estimated that Ontario will receive 152,402 cases; British Columbia will receive 18,164 cases; the Atlantic Provinces(minus Labrador, but including a little bit of Quebec) receives 38,259 cases; and the United States(divided among 10 states) will receive 11,359 cases.
8. To claim a prize, you must be a resident of Canada or the United States - one of 47 states. Which is not a state excluded from the contest?

Answer: Kentucky

Alright, I guess Hawaii and Alaska make sense - they're often excluded from such contests. But I have no idea why Florida isn't included, and neither is Vermont. Kentucky is one of the 10 states that shares the 11,000+ cases of "Roll up the Rim" cups distributed in the US.
9. According to the official "Roll up the Rim to Win" website, which is not a standard method for rolling up the rim?

Answer: The Pull Up

Instructions are as follows:
The Squeeze and Roll - Hold the cup with both hands, push the cup in at the top and roll the rim with both hands.
The Firm, Steady, Roll! - Use your hands to hold the cup firmly on both sides and roll up the rim with both thumbs.
The One-Thumber - Hold the cup with your dominant hand, and use the thumb of your other hand to to roll.

I'm a "Squeeze and Roll" kinda girl myself!
10. In 2006, two families engaged in a battle for one of the top prizes, when a young girl found a discarded cup in the trash, and asked an older girl for help rolling up the rim. What was the prize they both wanted?

Answer: an SUV

These were all prizes in the 2006 contest, but the Toyota RAV4 SUV was the top prize. This little controversy occurred in Saint-Jerome, Quebec, at an elementary school. The Tim Hortons company originally said they would not intervene, but it became more of a disaster when a man so far unrelated to the dispute stepped forward and claimed it was his cup that he had thrown out and wanted a DNA test to prove it. Eventually, the corporation decided to award the car to the family of the girl who found the cup.
