Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is a boxer ancestor?

Answer: Mastiff

Boxers are derived from mastiffs and bulldogs that were bred together. The Bullenbeiser is a descendant from the mastiff line. This was done in Germany in the late 19th century.
2. Why were boxer's tails originally docked (surgically shortened)?

Answer: To be more effective when used for hunting

The bulldog and mastiffs, ancestors of the boxer, were used for hunting. These dogs had their tail docked, and their ears cropped so that wild animals could not get hold of them. A docked tail and cropped ears made them a more efficient hunter and it also made it safer for them. This tradition was passed on to boxers.
3. Boxer's ears are naturally upright.

Answer: False

Boxers are born without upright ears and many people choose not to have the surgery done to make them stand upright. Many boxers that go on to become show dogs do have their ears cropped.
4. How did boxers get their names?

Answer: All of these

A boxer ancestor named BullenBeisser (nickname boxl) is said to be the origin of the boxer name. Boxer is just a corruption of the word "boxl". Some believe that the name represents the boxer's style of thrusting its front paws when fighting or playing. Regardless, all of these answers are ways that boxers have inherited their names.
5. Which of the following is NOT a coat color of a boxer?

Answer: Black

Brindle and fawn boxers are the most common. Fawn boxers tend to be tan, while brindle boxers are tan with black stripes. Some boxers however are born with excessive white markings. When this is the case they are called white boxers. Black boxers do not exist, but many boxers may seem to be black. When this happens it is normally called a reverse brindle or a very dark brindle.
6. Which of the following is NOT a common use for boxers?

Answer: Herding dogs

Although it may be possible to use a boxer as a herding dog, they are generally not the best type of dog suited for that activity. Since boxers are strong and alert dogs, they make great guard and police dogs. Their intelligence also makes them great guide and service dogs.
7. Besides the color, what is another difference of the white boxer?

Answer: They have more sensitive skin.

White boxers are not albino because they have pigment in their eyes, so this is not the cause of their white coat and therefore are not albino. Approximately 25 percent of boxers are born white making them quite common. All boxers have the same genealogy, white boxers are no different. Since they have a white coat, they are more receptive to sunlight and thus have more sensitive skin.
8. Boxers were used by the military.

Answer: True

Boxers were used by the United States during WWI as messenger dogs. They were also used as guard dogs and police dogs.
9. Which of the following is NOT common for boxers?

Answer: Poor eyesight

Hip dysplasia is a common problem for larger dogs. Heart conditions such as subaortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy are common problems for boxers and larger dogs as well. A sensitive stomach is a common issue with all boxers, therefore a proper diet is essential. Poor eyesight is something that is not common with boxers, but is more common with bulldogs.
10. Which of the following is true about boxers?

Answer: White boxers have white markings which exceed 1/3 of their entire coat

Boxers have been registered within the American Kennel Club (AKC) since 1904. The AKC does not mandate that all boxers must have cropped ears but for show dogs cropped ears are encouraged. Boxers have an underbite, not an overbite. A boxer is not considered brindle or fawn if they have white markings which exceed 1/3 of their entire coat. When this happens, the boxer is considered a white boxer.
