Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This 'Dark Knight' often dons a black mask and a blue/black cape.

Answer: Batman

When the first Batman comics hit the shelves in 1939, the superhero had a grey costume with a blue/black, mask, cape, and boots. Over time, his outfit developed a little. By the 2008 film 'The Dark Knight', he no longer wore a skin-tight grey suit. Instead, Batman had an armoured costume that displayed very defined muscles. Tim Burton was one of the first to give the character an all-black, tougher-looking outfit in his series of films in the 1980s/'90s.
2. In a white mask with shifting, inky black patterns, this anti-hero was often seen in a brown trench coat.

Answer: Rorschach

Rorschach appeared in 1987 within the pages of 'Watchmen'. Like Batman, he preferred vigilante justice and didn't seem to have supernatural powers per se. He couldn't fly, so he didn't need a cape, but he was an exceptional fighter. It didn't matter who Rorschach was fighting, he would still wear his signature trench coat and fedora hat.
3. This swinging superhero has a red mask and red boots, but no cape.

Answer: Spider-Man

Spider-Man has had a few different costumes in the comics over the decades as Peter Parker wrestled with clones, symbiotes, and his own identity crisis. He first appeared in print in 1962 with a red mask and red boots. The red parts of his outfit had a black, web-like pattern on them.

He also had blue elements in his suit and a black spider on his chest. That costume is the iconic Spider-Man outfit, which was used in the 2002 film, 'Spider-Man'.
4. This superhero wore a black mask and boots with a red, skin-tight suit, just like the rest of her family.

Answer: Elastigirl (Mrs Incredible)

Elastigirl was a member of Disney Pixar's 'The Incredibles' (2004) and is sometimes referred to as Mrs Incredible. When she and her husband (Mr Incredible) worked as superheroes, they had individual costumes. When they came together to fight alongside their children, however, all five of them wore the same red outfit with black masks and black boots. Since the success of the original movie, the Incredibles have featured in a 2018 sequel, video games, and their own comic book.
5. The mask and boots are all part of a red and gold robotic suit that gives the wearer superhuman powers.

Answer: Iron Man

Iron Man first appeared in 1963 dressed head to toe in a silver suit. Tony Stark (the man inside the costume) soon developed his design and built the red and gold suit that audiences have become familiar with. The armoured suit evolved over time, but in the 2008 film 'Iron Man', its features included being bulletproof and allowing Stark to fly.
6. This superhero first appeared in comics and movies with a black cape and black boots. She didn't have a mask, but she did have iconic white hair.

Answer: Storm

As one of the X-Men, Storm first appeared in comics in 1975. Although her costume evolved over time, she started out in all-black outfit with a black cape. In some of the comics and 'X-Men: The Animated Series' (1992), Storm wore a white outfit, but she returned to black in her first movie, 'X-Men' (2000). Her iconic bright white hair has never changed.
7. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's a man in red boots, a flowing red cape, and a big letter on his chest.

Answer: Superman

Superman showed up in print in 1938 dressed in a blue suit with red undies on top. He also wore a red cape, but famously no mask to conceal his identity. His costume barely changed over the next 70 years, though the blueness of his suit did become darker in 2013's 'Man of Steel'.
8. With a metal headdress and red boots, this Amazonian princess was ready for action.

Answer: Wonder Woman

In 1941, Wonder Woman appeared in a comic wearing her iconic red top and a blue skirt with white stars. It wasn't long before her skirt became shorts (well, that is more practical for fighting), but from the end of the 1960s up until the 1990s, her shorts grew shorter and shorter until there was practically nothing covering her lower half. Luckily, she still had a pair of knee-length boots to protect her modesty.

In 2016, when Wonder Woman appeared on the silver screen in 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice', her costume was a lot darker than it had appeared before.

She looked more like the Greek warrior she was designed to be.
9. No mask, no cape, no boots. In fact, the only thing this superhero wears is a pair of ripped trousers.

Answer: The Hulk

When Bruce Banner got angry he transformed into the Hulk. He grew by a foot or two in height and gained about 600kg in weight. As a result, Bruce rarely got to keep the clothes he was wearing to begin with. Often in comics, the Hulk had torn, purple trousers on. In the movies, however, he was wearing whichever colour Bruce was wearing before the transformation.
10. She wears a black and gold helmet, but the wings on her back are her most distinctive feature.

Answer: Hawkgirl

In the comics, Hawgirl had a belt made of Nth metal that gave the wearer special abilities. When wearing the belt, she had superhuman strength and excellent vision. She appeared in comic-form in 1940 alongside Hawkman, who also had huge bird wings and similar supernatural abilities. Both were immortal, god-like people who had been cursed to die and reincarnate.

The character made a brief appearance on 'Smallville', where her body was entombed in a casket with her helmet and mace.
