Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From which Shakespearean play is The Little Mermaid's name, Ariel, taken?

Answer: The Tempest

Ariel is Prospero's servant. Prospero basically has his birthright stolen from him by his brother, Alonso, and is banished to an island. Prospero finds this fairy "imprisoned in a cloven pine," and frees him/her promising freedom on the condition that Ariel work for him (he's a sorcerer) for several years.
2. About how old were Pocahontas and John Smith when they met?

Answer: 12 and 37

Yes, it's true, and they were actually just close friends. I'll check, but I believe the dramatic scene where she saves him from being killed is also a fictional, although popular, myth.
*This is an approximation. I'm sure some accounts vary, which is why I didn't make the pairs too close.
3. Supposedly, upon which Shakespearean tragedy is "The Lion King" based?

Answer: Hamlet

I was quite shocked when our English teacher told us this. See, there's the two brothers (Mufasa/Old Hamlet & Scar/Claudius), one becomes king, the other is jealous and assassinates him, then tries to kill the son(Simba/Hamlet), who must flee but returns to fight. And then there's the oxymoronic role of the "wise fool" (Rafiki/Polonius), the two friends (Timon & Pumba/Rosencranz & Guildenstern), the girl (Nala/Ophelia), although in her case the role was only marginally like the original, and of course the ending is totally different.
4. Yes or No: Is "Beauty and the Beast" really a French fairy tale?

Answer: Yes

It's called "La Belle et la Bete" and there are several different traditional versions of it. My favorite movie was based on the tale by Madame LePrince de Beaumont and is in black-and-white, with French subtitles, and was directed by Jean Cocteau in 1946. I highly recommend it.
5. "The Aristocats" was the substitute for the cartoon version of what highly popular Broadway musical?

Answer: Cats

T.S. Eliot was approached by Disney, but refused to grant them the rights to his "Old Possom's Book of Practical Cats." His widow, however, did permit Andrew Lloyd Webber to make the musical on the condition that they not be turned into "pussy cats."
6. Who wrote the music for the waltz from "Sleeping Beauty," called "Once Upon a Dream"?

Answer: Tchaikowsky

It's from the ballet he wrote, "The Sleeping Beauty," comissioned in 1890 for the Kirov Ballet by Czar Nicolas II. The Rose Waltz is in Act I, during a celebration for Princess Aurora's 16th birthday.
7. In "Cinderella," the fairy tale, how many times does she go to the ball?

Answer: 3

There are three balls, one each night, one after the other. A gruesome tidbit about the original? The two sisters cut off their heels and toes to make the "glass" (fur, actually) slipper fit their feet, but the messenger was like, "Euuu--you cut off part of your foot--I can, like, see the blood oozing out...no, that doesn't count."
8. In the Greek myth of "Heracles", is Heracles a god?

Answer: No

His father was Zeus but his mother Alcmene was a mortal ... this makes Heracles a demi-god. Such was the case for many ancient heroes; their father was Zeus and their mother was the mortal-female-of-the-week.
9. According to "The 1001 Arabian Nights," what was the name of Aladdin's wife, the princess?

Answer: Badir al-Badur

Jasmine is the name in the Disney cartoon movie. Sheherezade is the name of the girl who tells all the stories in "The 1001 Arabian Nights," in order to delay her death. The princess is the Lady Badir al-Badur.
10. How many Lost Boys are there in the book, "Peter Pan and Wendy" (not including Peter)?

Answer: 5

Tootles, Curly, Slighty, and the twins. If you've ever seen "Hook," I thought it was funny and later ironic when Peter arrives at the camp and says, "What is this, 'Lord of the Flies' nursery school?" because there is also a pair of twins in that, named Sam and Eric. Later on in the book they become the literally inseperable "Samneric."
