Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Rise of the Silver Surfer" is the subtitle to which film sequel from 2007, based on a Marvel comic series?

Answer: Fantastic Four

The titular Silver Surfer begins wreaking havoc across Earth, creating huge craters. The team follow the Surfer across the globe whereupon they discover it is merely serving a greater entity, Galactus, and thanks to his "surfboard" emitting a cosmic signal, it is drawing Galactus towards Earth so it can feed off its energy. Sick of the constant planetary destruction that Galactus causes, in order to save the Earth from destruction, the Surfer sacrifices himself and destroys Galactus.

Each of the four main cast members reprised their roles from the previous film: Jessica Alba as the Invisible Woman, Michael Chiklis as the Thing, Ioan Gruffudd as Mister Fantastic, and Chris Evans as the Human Torch. Interestingly, Chris Evans later played the role of Captain America in "Captain America: The First Avenger", another film based on Marvel comics and characters.
2. "Silver Linings Playbook" won which actress her first Best Actress Oscar at the 2013 Academy Awards?

Answer: Jennifer Lawrence

"Silver Linings Playbook" centres around Pat Solatano Jr. (Bradley Cooper) as he tries to get his life back on track after eight months of treatment for his bipolar disorder. His attempts to win back his estranged wife are further compounded when he meets a young widow named Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence).

"Silver Linings Playbook" was a resounding success, nominated for the "Big Five" Academy Awards in 2013 (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay). Ultimately, Jennifer Lawrence walked away with the award for Best Actress.
3. "Nightmare in Silver" is an episode of British sci-fi programme "Doctor Who", first broadcast in 2013. Which of the Doctor's enemies served as the episode's primary antagonists?

Answer: Cybermen

The story is set at an abandoned theme park, where an army of newly-redesigned Cybermen (faster, stronger and, quite frankly, more dangerous than ever) seek to continue their task of killing or turning others into Cybermen. The Doctor also comes under the influence of the Cyber Planner and battles with it inside his own mind.

"Nightmare in Silver" is the penultimate episode of the seventh series of "Doctor Who", sandwiched between "The Crimson Horror" and "The Name of the Doctor". It is also the second episode for the Eleventh Doctor to be written by fantasy author (and legend in his own right) Neil Gaiman, his previous episode being Series 6's "The Doctor's Wife" in which the "soul" of the TARDIS is placed inside the body of a human.
4. Silver was the name of the horse belonging to the Lone Ranger in the 1950s US television series.

Answer: True

"The Lone Ranger" was a mainstay of American television in the 1950s, and featured Clayton Moore as the titular Lone Ranger (although John Hart did also play the Ranger for some episodes due to contractual disagreements between Moore and the production company). To take the "silver" connection further, Tonto, the Lone Ranger's partner, was played by Jay Silverheels.

The Lone Ranger, his horse Silver, and Tonto roamed the Wild West in efforts to combat injustice and help those in need.
5. Long John Silver is the bad guy in which classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel?

Answer: Treasure Island

Long John Silver is the infamous one-legged antagonist of the classic 1883 novel. Despite this, for the initial part of it, Silver is friendly and often father-like in his ways towards the protagonist, Jim Hawkins. Silver is often accompanied by his faithful parrot, Captain Flint, whose utterances include the now-famous "Pieces of eight".

It's most likely this particular representation of a pirate that has had an influence on many fictional pirates in all sorts of media.
6. From which series of fantasy novels does "The Silver Chair" come?

Answer: C. S. Lewis' "The Chronicles of Narnia"

None of the original Pevensie children feature in "The Silver Chair"; instead, Eustace Scrubb, cousin of the Pevensies and last seen in "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader", takes centre stage along with his friend, Jill Pole. They team up with a Marsh-wiggle named Puddleglum to find the lost Prince Rilian, son of King Caspian X, who has been taken by the Lady of the Green Kirtle. The titular silver chair, rather appropriately, refers to a silver chair that supposedly stops a young servant of the Lady (later revealed to be Rilian himself) from becoming a serpent and killing everything in sight during his manic fits each night.

"The Silver Chair" was the fourth book in the series to be published, but within the series' chronology, is immediately followed by the seventh book, "The Last Battle".
7. "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" was a song in 1969 for which group?

Answer: The Beatles

"Maxwell's Silver Hammer" was written by Paul McCartney (though John Lennon also received a writing credit on the album, "Abbey Road"). The titular Maxwell Edison commits three murders throughout the song with his silver hammer, as each repetition of the chorus indicates: "Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer / Came down upon [her/his] head / Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer / Made sure that [she/he] was dead". According to Ringo Starr, "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" was "the worst track [they] ever had to record", citing protracted recording sessions in order for it to sound right.
8. Silverchair was a band that hailed from which southern-hemispheric country?

Answer: Australia

The Newcastle-based alternative band was one of the country's most popular musical acts prior to their disbandment in 2011. They won numerous ARIA awards during their nineteen-year career, including their 2007 Album of the Year-winning "Young Modern", which featured the Single of the Year-winning song "Straight Lines".

Incidentally, Silverchair's name comes from the "Narnia" novel, "The Silver Chair".
9. "Pokemon Silver" was remade in 2009 as "Pokemon SoulSilver" for which Nintendo system?

Answer: Nintendo DS

"SoulSilver" retained the basic "Silver" experience whilst also expanding upon it, utilising the power of the technologically-superior Nintendo DS. Within the game, players are tasked with exploring the Johto region in search of Pokemon to capture and train and other Pokemon Trainers to do battle with.

Both "SoulSilver" and "HeartGold", falling within Generation IV, are remakes of their respective Generation II "Pokemon" games, "Silver" and "Gold". This marked the second time that games in the series had been remade, following the Generation III games "FireRed" and "LeafGreen", remakes of the original "Red" and "Blue"/"Green" (dependent on the region; "Blue" was more common outside Japan).
10. Silver is a character that first appeared in the "Sonic" series in 2006. Like Sonic himself, what type of animal is Silver?

Answer: Hedgehog

Silver's debut appearance in the "Sonic" universe was, unfortunately, in the critically-panned 2006 game "Sonic the Hedgehog". Within the game, Silver's storyline involves him travelling back from an apocalyptic distant future to kill Sonic. Along with Sonic and Shadow (also a hedgehog), the three team up against the god Solaris.

The 2006 "Sonic the Hedgehog" is best forgotten amongst fans of the "Sonic" series. Because of its numerous numbers of bugs, glitches, very long loading times, and difficult-to-master controls, it is considered by many to not only be the worst game in the series one of the worst video games to have ever been produced. In their defence, the developers attributed many of the game's issues to the challenge of having to develop the game in time for the launch of the then-brand new consoles (the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360).
