Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Maison Margiela

Answer: Replica

Maison Margiela was founded in Paris in 1988 by the Belgian fashion designer Martin Margiela. Maison Margiela has several product lines including woman's clothing, men's clothing, fragrances, eyewear, jewellery, accessories and shoes.
As stated on the label, "Replica" is intended as a "Reproduction of familiar scents and moments of various locations and periods".
There are several "Replica" eau de toilettes available. Some are for both genders (for instance « Replica By the Fireplace", the smell of which is described as chestnut and burning wood), while others are reserved for men (e.g. "Replica at the Barber's", with shaving and leathery notes) or for women (for example "Replica Lipstick On", which would smell as night blush and rice powder).
Martin Margiela was born in 1957 and graduated from the Antwerp Fashion Academy in 1979.
2. Jack Black

Answer: Pit Boss

Jack Black is a family company based in Texas that aims at making superior skincare for men. The company is based in Texas and was founded around the turn of the millennium (the official website is quite vague). They sell shaving products (not only shaving gel and after shave, but also razors and a shaving brush), skincare (including sunscreen blockers and lip balm), deodorant, scrubbing soap, shampoo and hair conditioner, beard wax and so forth.

The "Pit Boss" is one of Jack Black's brands of deodorant.
3. Givenchy

Answer: Gentleman

Givenchy is a French fashion and perfume house founded in 1952 by the fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy (born 1927). The perfume collection has dozens of products for women as well as for men.
Givenchy was bought by the holding LVMH in 1988.
Fragrances for men include the "Gentlemen" line (including the original "Gentleman" in an old fashioned square bottle, and "Gentlemen Only" in at least four variants), but also "Xeryus" and "Pi".
Fragrances for women include "L'ange noir" ("Black Angel") and "Very Irrésistible".
One brand of fragrances is for both genders: "Les parfums mythiques" ("Mythical Perfumes").
4. Bvlgari

Answer: Aqva pour homme

Bulgari is an Italian company specialized in fragrances, jewellery and fashion accessories, and hotels. The company was founded by the Greek jeweller Sotirios Bulgaris (1857-1932) in 1884. The holding company LVMH acquired the majority in the company in 2011.
The fragrance products of Bulgari all mention the company name in the ancient Latin alphabet, so in capitals only and with a V instead of a U. The same style is also applied for the brand names for the three perfume lines for men ("BVLGARI MAN", "AQVA" and "BVLGARI POUR HOMME") and in the three lines for women ("GOLDEA", "SPLENDIDA BVLGARI" and "OMNIA").
"AQVA pour homme" exists in several variants: "Atlantique", "Marine", and the basic version.
5. Comme des Garçons

Answer: Play

Although the name is French, the fashion house Comme des Garçons is in fact a Japanese company, founded in 1973 by Rei Kawakubo (born 1942). Rei chose her own way of doing things: for instance she started the collection with this brand in 1969 and only founded a company with the same name in 1973. The motto of Comme des Garçons is (as quoted from the official website) "Design by not designing. // No design is design. // The prototype is strong. // Absence of concept is creation."
The fragrances created by Comme des Garçons are not the perfumes one can find in traditional perfume houses. For instance, the line "Olfactory Library" contains the eau de toilette "Garage", containing traces of kerosene mixed with vetiver and cedarwood.
The fragrance line "Play" comes in three variants: "Play Red" (including aromas of red Cherrywood and red mandarin), "Play Green" (with aromas of mint pus and lime, and others) and "Play Black" (containing various aromas such as black pepper and birch tar).
6. Acqua di Parma

Answer: Blu Mediterraneo

Acqua di Parma is an Italian company founded in 1916 (in Parma, of course). Count Carlo Magnani was the founder of the company, but oddly his name is not mentioned on the official website.
The company started with lightly perfumed eau de colognes, and gradually expanded to bathrobes, towels and leather ware. The company also bought an interest in two Italian spas, and developed aromatic home candles.
The fragrances are divided in three lines: the Colonia (at least eight eau de colognes, including the original product from 1916), a line of feminine fragrances (based upon flowers such as iris, rose or magnolia) and the line "Mediterraneo Blu", recreating typical scents of Mediterranean landscapes.
"Mediterraneo Blu" comes also in at least six variants, including "Mandorlo di Sicilia" (Sicilian almonds), "Fico di Amalfi" (Amalfian fig) and "Ginepro di Sardegna" (Sardinian juniper).
The "collezione Barbieri" includes shaving gels and after shave creams.
7. Ralph Lauren

Answer: Polo

Ralph Lauren was named after its founder (born Ralph Lifshitz in 1939). The company produces luxury clothing, houseware, jewellery and fragrances.
The products for men are usually indicated with the brand name Polo, after the sport in which Ralph Lifshitz was quite interested. The perfume line Ralph Lauren Polo exists in at least a dozen variants ("Ralph Lauren Polo Red", "Ralph Lauren Polo Black", "Ralph Lauren Polo Blue", to name just a few).
Although Ralph Lauren is not affiliated to a major fashion house, its perfumes are produced by L'Oreal as subcontractor.
8. Hermes

Answer: Un jardin

Hermès is a French fashion house founded in 1837 by Thierry Hermès (1801-1878). The company started with harnesses and saddlery for the coaches, and expanded to clothing and accessories. In 1937 they first sold the iconic scarves with which we still associate the brand name.

In 1951 the company started selling perfumes. The perfume line for women includes brands as "Calèche" (French for coach), "Amazone" and "Galop d'Hermès" - all referring to the original lines of saddlery. Fragrances for men include "Bel Ami" (French for beautiful friend) and "Equipage".

There are also unisex lines, such as the Cologne line (for instance "Eau d'Orange verte" and "Eau de pamplemousse rosée") and the Garden line. This latter consists of at least six brands, including "un jardin sur le toit" (a roof garden) and "un jardin sur le Nil" (a Nile garden).
9. Prada

Answer: Luna Rossa

Prada is an Italian fashion house founded in 1913 by Mario Prada and his brother Martino. It started with leather goods and expanded to handbags, shoes, perfumes and even mobile phones. The perfumes for women have the names Prada Amber, Prada Candy and La Femme Prada.

The perfumes for men include "L'homme Prada", "Amber pour Homme" and "Luna Rossa" - the latter meaning "red moon". "Luna Rossa" perfumes come in different variants, such as "Luna Rossa Sport" and "Luna Rossa Extreme". The "Luna Rossa" series is based upon lavender scents. Unisex perfumes include "Midnight Train" and "Dark Light".
10. Calvin Klein

Answer: CK2

Calvin Klein (born 1942) founded in 1968 the eponymous company, starting with coats and dresses for women. The company soon expanded with a full collection for women as well as for men, jeans (for both genders), and underwear. Perfumes were also added.
Calvin Klein's men's perfumes include the brands "Eternity", "Obsessed", "ck one" and "CK2". The same brands and "Euphoria" are also used for women's perfumes. The perfumes were originally subcontracted to a Unilever branch, but since 2005 the license for this subcontracting is held by Coty (a specialised perfume house).
Calvin Klein was sold to the investment company Phillips Van Heusen Corporation in 2002.
