Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with the king of children's movies, Walt Disney. Which of these films was not a Disney film?

Answer: The Grinch

The film is based on the book by Dr Seuss. 'Pirates of the Caribbean' is one of the rare Disney films that isn't animated.
'The Grinch' was directed by Ron Howard and played by Jim Carrey.
2. Name the book featuring the characters 'Long John Silver' and 'Jim Hawkins'.

Answer: Treasure Island

'Treasure Island' was writted by Robert Louis Stevenson. It has been made into a film called 'The Muppets Treasure Island' featuring - yes, you've guessed it - the Muppets! It is narrated by Jim and tells of his adventures to find the sinister Captain Flint's treasure.
3. Dumbledore is - in fact - a what?

Answer: a type of bee

A dumbledore is a type of bee - otherwise known as a bumblebee! It is only a wizard in the 'Harry Potter' series of books. In the 'Harry Potter' books, the wizard Dumbledore is the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
4. Which of these games features four mice, a cage and lump of cheese?

Answer: Mousetrap

The aim of Mousetrap is not to get caught under the cage at the end. Although one of the more exciting board games, Mousetrap needs some setting up. You need to build the trap first - set up the boot to kick the ball etc - and make sure you've got a die.
5. There is a character called Joyce-Ann in the book 'Bridge to Terabithia'.

Answer: true

Joyce-Ann is Jesse's youngest sister. But, because she's so young, she doesn't play much of a role. Maybelle seems to be the sister most commonly featured. 'Bridge to Terabithia' was written by Katherine Paterson and the film was directed by Gabor Csupo. It won the 1978 Newbery Medal Award (an award for books).
6. Who is the main character in Anthony Horowitz's book 'Stormbreaker'?

Answer: Alex Rider

'Stormbreaker' has been made into a film starring Alex Pettyfer as Alex. Alex is an orphan, brought up by his uncle. But when his uncle mysteriously dies in a "car crash", Alex discover MI6, the world of spies...
7. What does J.K. Rowling stand for?

Answer: Joanne Kathleen Rowling

J.K Rowling wrote 'Harry Potter' and is probably one of the most famous authors around! She was born on 31st July 1965. Suprisingly, Kathleen isn't actually part of her real name - she has no middle name! Her publishers told her that boys might not buy a book by a female author so told her to use initials instead. So she chose the name Kathleen from her paternal grandmother's side (her father's mother).

Information sourced from Wikipedia.
8. Which queen of England had a famously long reign during the 19th and early 20th centuries and married her cousin?

Answer: Queen Victoria

Queen Victoria reigned England for sixty-four years and was also Empress of India. She married her cousin, the German Prince Albert. Together, they had nine children. She died in 1901.
9. Which of these is not a mammal?

Answer: King Cobra

All of them are mammals except the King Cobra, which is a reptile. There are many differences between mammals and reptiles, to name a few:
Reptiles lay eggs; mammals give birth to live young.
Rebtiles are cold blooded whereas mammals have warm blood.
Reptiles tend to have scaly skin while mammals tend to have fur.

Of course there are exceptions. The duck-billed platypus, for instance, lays eggs, but that was not confirmed until 1884.
10. How many consonants are in the following sentence: "J.K. Rowling wrote 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets'."

Answer: 33

Consonants are all the letters of the alphabet except A, E, I, O and U, which are vowels. How many consonants are in your name, I wonder?

But, as kimbeaty pointed out, there is another vowel in that sentence that I have not included as it's quite an odd prospect - that Y is in fact a vowel.

"Y as a Vowel

Y is a vowel when it comes anywhere in a word other than the beginning.

As a vowel, y has no sound of its own. It borrows sounds from the vowels e and i:

y as a long e: candy, Polly
y as a long i: cry, type
y as a short i: gym, pyramid
y as an e and an i in the same word: dynasty, mystery"
