Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the "Harry Potter" stories, a fictional currency is used by the wizards. What is the name of the coin with the highest value?

Answer: Galleon

The three coin denominations used by the wizards in J.K. Rowling's books are the gold galleon, the silver sickle and the bronze knut. It takes 17 sickles to make one galleon, and 29 knuts to make one sickle.
2. The Small Isles are a group of islands located off the west coast of Scotland. What is the name of the largest island in this group?

Answer: Rum

The Isle of Rum is the largest of the Small Isles, which are part of the Inner Hebrides. The island is a National Nature Reserve, and is home to a variety of birds and animals, including a large population of red deer.
3. Which actor was a regular cast member of the TV series "21 Jump Street"?

Answer: Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp played Officer Tom Hanson on "21 Jump Street". The show was about a group of police officers who worked undercover in schools because of their youthful appearance. The show aired for five seasons, from 1987-1991, with Depp appearing in seasons 1-4.
4. Which group had a hit in the early 1980s with the song "Twilight Zone"?

Answer: Golden Earring

Founded by George Kooymans and Rinus Gerritsen in the early 1960s, Golden Earring scored several hits in the Netherlands before becoming known across Europe. Their first U.S. hit was "Radar Love" in 1974. "Twilight Zone" is from Golden Earring's album "Cut", and peaked on the U.S. charts in 1983 at number ten.
5. In one episode of "Seinfeld", Jerry unwittingly promised Kramer's girlfriend, Leslie (the low talker), that he would wear one of her designs for his appearance on the "Today" show. What did he say he would wear?

Answer: Puffy shirt

Jerry and Elaine were having dinner with Kramer and Leslie one evening when Kramer had to leave the table. Leslie was talking, but Elaine and Jerry couldn't hear her and didn't want to be rude, so they agreed with everything she said. Kramer later informed Jerry that he had agreed to wear Leslie's new design, a puffy shirt, for his appearance on the "Today" show. Jerry wore the shirt, but told Bryant Gumbel that it was a stupid shirt, ruining Leslie's career.
6. What word completes Matthew 7:3 as it appears in the New International Version of the bible: "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the _______ in your own eye?"

Answer: Plank

Verses four and five continue with "How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."
7. Which popular 1980s accessory was worn by lead singers Joe Elliott (Def Leppard), David Lee Roth (Van Halen) and especially Mike Reno (Loverboy) onstage?

Answer: Colorful bandanas

Colorful paisley bandanas were very popular during most of the 1980s. Joe Elliott and David Lee Roth wore their bandanas around the neck (cowboy style), while Mike Reno also added one as a headband. It was generally acceptable to tie them anywhere on your person, including around the knee, the arm or the wrist.
8. Humorum, Australe and Nectaris are the names of maria on the moon. What does maria mean?

Answer: Seas

Maria (latin for seas, and plural of mare) are the dark areas that we see on the moon. They were named seas by early astronomers who thought they were actual seas. These seas are actually basaltic flows formed after volcanic eruptions or large meteoric impacts. Perhaps the most well-known of these is Mare Tranquilitatis, or the Sea of Tranquility, the landing site of Apollo 11.
9. Which member of The Monkees sang lead vocals on "Daydream Believer"?

Answer: Davy Jones

Davy Jones, Peter Tork, Michael Nesmith and Micky Dolenz were originally hired to be a fictional pop group for the TV series "The Monkees". Due to the show's success, they became a real pop group. The TV show began airing in 1966, and ran for two seasons.

The Monkees originally disbanded in 1970, but have reunited several times. Although Davy Jones was portrayed as the lead singer on the TV series, all four members sang lead vocals on the group's albums.
10. The correct answers to questions 1-9 should bring a type of person to mind.

Answer: Pirate

Ahoy! Ye guessed right, didn't ye, matey? The stereotypical vision we have of the pirate originated with Robert Louis Stevenson's novel "Treasure Island". Your average pirate wore a PUFFY SHIRT, a GOLD EARRING and a colorful BANDANA tied around his head as he sailed the SEAS searching for GALLEONS to plunder. Like other pirates, Captain Jack Sparrow (played by JOHNNY DEPP in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl") just wanted to drink some RUM, try to sidestep any walking of the PLANK, and by all means avoid DAVY JONES' locker (the depths of the sea where men perished). Arrrgh!
