Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Grand Bahama is one of the two northernmost islands of the Bahamas. Which of these is the name of one of its major cities?

Answer: Freeport

Grand Bahama is the closest island in the Bahamas to the United States, with its western tip just over 60 mi (100 km) from Palm Beach, Florida. The largest city on Grand Bahama is Freeport, which has a population of over 25,000 people. At one time, Freeport was a popular tourist destination, but its popularity has diminished following the devastation caused by several hurricanes, most notably Hurricane Dorian in 2019.

As depicted in the photograph, Freeport was a popular stopping ground for cruise ships.
2. Which of these is the name of a town on Great Abaco Island, whose airport received a new terminal in 2014?

Answer: Marsh Harbour

Great Abaco Island lies directly to the east of Grand Bahama at the northern end of the archipelago. Leonard M. Thompson International Airport is located near the town of Marsh Harbour, which is located in the center of Great Abaco. The airport's sole runway was replaced in 2007 and a new terminal was completed in 2014, which allowed for more flights from the U.S. to the island. Treasure Cay Airport, which is also located on Great Abaco, used to see a significant amount of traffic from the U.S. as well, but it was heavily damaged by Hurricane Dorian.
3. The island in this satellite image is the largest of the Bahamas. What is the name of it?

Answer: Andros Island

Andros Island is located directly to the south of Grand Bahama. Andros Island is technically comprised of three large islands (North Andros, Mangrove Cay and South Andros) and several smaller ones. However, the Bahamian government treats them all as a single island. With an area of nearly 6,000 square km, Andros Island is larger than all other islands in the Bahamas archipelago combined.

Despite being the largest island in the Bahamas, it is not heavily populated.
4. What is the name of the island where you will find Nassau, capital city of the Bahamas?

Answer: New Providence

Nassau is located on the island of New Providence, which is located just east of Andros Island. New Providence has the highest population of all the islands in the Bahamas. Nassau, as well as the entire island of New Providence, used to be a popular spot for pirates such as Blackbeard and Calico Jack.

The building in the photograph is Atlantis, a popular vacation resort located on Paradise Island, a small island linked via bridge to the northeast of Nassau/New Providence.
5. Harbour Island is famous for its pink sand beaches. It lies just of the coast of what larger island in the Bahamas?

Answer: Eleuthera

The island of Eleuthera is located to the east of Nassau/New Providence. Harbour Island lies just off the shore of North Eleuthera, which is also where you will find the island's main airport. Harbour Island's famous pink sand comes from microscopic organisms that live within the nearby coral reefs. On the island of Eleuthera itself, tourists can tour the Hatchet Bay Cave, which is located near Alice Town.

The cave contains many stalagmites and stalactites which are made of limestone.
6. This structure is located on an island in the Bahamas that might make someone think it is a haven for cute animals. Which is it?

Answer: Cat Island

Cat Island is located directly to the southeast of Eleuthera. One of the most notable attractions on the island is The Hermitage (not to be confused with the one in Tennessee). It is a religious monastery that was built atop of Mount Alvernia, which is considered to be the highest point in the Bahamas.

Despite its name, Cat Island does not have a robust feline population. In fact, the island was not named after the animal. It is believed that the island was actually named after a pirate by the name of Arthur Catt.
7. On which Bahamian island will you find the city of George Town?

Answer: Great Exuma

Great Exuma is located to the south of both Eleuthera and Cat Island. The island of Great Exuma was the site of the infamous Fyre Festival in 2017, which had been advertised as a luxurious music festival in the Bahamas. The event was a complete bust, causing thousands of people to waste their time and money on a poorly organized event. Billy McFarland, the entrepreneur in charge of the festival, was later arrested and convicted of fraud.
8. The name of this island in the Bahamas might cause you to think that you somehow ended up in New York.

Answer: Long Island

Yes, the Bahamas has its own Long Island, albeit this one has better beaches and much less traffic. It is located to the southeast of Cat Island and to the east of Great Exuma. The Tropic of Cancer intersects the northern portion of Long Island, where the aptly named Tropic of Cancer Beach marks its approximate location. Tourists can travel to Long Island, Bahamas via a small airport near the town of Deadman's Cay.
9. If you are looking to stay sober in the Bahamas, then it may be best that you avoid which of these locations?

Answer: Rum Cay

Rum Cay is an island that can be found directly to the east of the northern tip of Long Island in the Bahamas. It is believed that Rum Cay received its name after an old unnamed cargo ship carrying rum sank near the island. It would not be the only noteworthy wreck in the small island's history. Later, in 1861, a British military transport vessel named the HMS Conqueror ran aground near Rum Cay, which left its crew of 1,400 stranded on it. All of the sailors were eventually rescued.
10. These white mounds are located on Great Inagua, the southernmost island in the Bahamas. What natural material are they made of?

Answer: salt

Great Inagua is located at the far southern end of the Bahamas archipelago. It is less than 70 mi (115 km) away from Haiti (which lies directly to the south) and Cuba (which lies to the southwest). While its population is pretty small, Great Inagua is a major contributor to the salt industry as the Morton Salt Company owns a major salt producing facility on the island.

The salt dunes can be found about 15 km north of Matthew Town, the island's largest residential area.
