Cancun is in Southeastern Mexico, on the Yucatan Peninsula. There are those beautiful beaches, upscale hotels, and it's a mecca for spring breakers. If you like to party, Cancun is the place. Veracruz is an important port, the third largest in Mexico. The seawall (malecon) walk along the docks draws many Mexican tourists. Since 1923, Veracruz has celebrated "Carnaval", a pre-Lenten week-long party similar to New Orleans' Mardi Gras, with parades, costumes, extravagant floats, dancing and music, and enormous crowds. Veracruz' terrain ranges from beaches to the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains.
