Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Though it's not apples, the fertile Red Mountain in southern Washington state produces some of the country's best what?

Answer: red wine

Red Mountain is a part of Yakima Valley, an area famous for its apples. Red Mountain is an American Viticultural Area on which grapes have been grown since the 1970s. The grapes and the wines produced from them gives Red Mountain its acclaim. The actual name Red Mountain comes from neither the grapes grown there nor the apples in the region; it comes from the drooping brome grass which grows there and turns the mountain red during the spring.
2. California's densely populated, tourism-heavy Orange County is home to which of these tourist attractions?

Answer: Disneyland

Located in Anaheim, Orange County, California, Disneyland opened its doors on July 17, 1955. It was the first Disney theme park to be built and the only one built under the supervision of Walt Disney. Though there were many issues, 28,000 people attended Disneyland on its first day. Today, Disneyland gets millions of visitors per year, and numerous Disney theme parks have been built around the world.
3. The world's first national park, Yellowstone borrows its name from what nearby geographical object?

Answer: river

In what is now northwest Wyoming, French trappers named a river the Roche Jaune; this was accurately translated to its modern name, Yellowstone. The Yellowstone River subsequently lent its name to the park that Ulysses Grant established in 1872. Yellowstone Park is an ecologically and environmentally diverse region.

It is home to the geyser Old Faithful and a supervolcano that last erupted about 3,000 years ago.
4. Home to a gridiron football team and named after a nearby geographical feature, which city is unofficially known as Titletown, USA?

Answer: Green Bay

Not far from the bay of Green Bay (itself a part of Lake Michigan) is the city of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Green Bay is the home of the Green Bay Packers, a gridiron football team whose numerous wins give Green Bay its unofficial nickname of Titletown. Fans of the Green Bay Packers are sometimes called cheeseheads, a reference to the cheese that Wisconsin is famous for.
5. Running along the eastern United States, the Blue Ridge Mountains are a part of which major mountain chain?

Answer: Appalachian Mountains

The Appalachian Mountains are a very old chain of mountains in the eastern United States. The Blue Ridge Mountains are a part of the Appalachians, and are so named for their blue appearance from a distance, a color in part contributed by the trees that grow there. The Blue Ridge Mountains run from Georgia to Pennsylvania and include the Shenandoah National Park and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The Appalachian Mountains are very colorful, and also include the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Green Mountains of Vermont, and Black Mountains of North Carolina.
6. The "purple mountain majesties" mentioned in "America the Beautiful" are a reference to which high-reaching, Colorado-visible mountain chain?

Answer: Rocky Mountains

Katharine Lee Bates wrote the lyrics to "America the Beautiful", and based the images on scenes she saw on her way to Colorado Springs, Colorado. The lyrics were published as a poem in 1895 and set to music in 1910. The purple mountain majesties that the song mentions are a reference to the Rocky Mountains that Bates saw in Colorado. From a distance, the atmosphere makes the Rocky Mountains appear purple.
7. Famous for its rocks, gold, and a couple of large monuments, the Black Hills are primarily situated in the western reaches of which state?

Answer: South Dakota

The Black Hills of South Dakota are so-named for the black rocks in the region. The area was proclaimed Native American land by treaty in 1868, and the Lakota tribe has a history with the region. George Custer's discovery of gold created a gold rush in the Black Hills in 1874. Black Hills includes Mount Rushmore and its sculpture of presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln. Black Hills also includes Thunderhead Mountain and the Crazy Horse Memorial.
8. Perhaps the most famous of its kind in the nation, the White House is the landmark residence of which important American?

Answer: President of the United States

The White House is the official residence of the President of the United States. It was designed by James Hoban and built during the end of the 18th century. Its address is 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC. John Adams was the first president to reside in the White House. The White House can be seen on the reverse of the $20 bill.

The White House has undergone several renovations during its lifetime. The most notable of these were after it was burned during the War of 1812, and during the 1940s, when it was on the verge of collapsing.
9. Spanned by a bridge, the strait that connects San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Ocean is known as what?

Answer: Golden Gate

The Golden Gate is a narrow strait that provides a small connection between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. It was given its name by John Fremont in 1846. 'Golden Gate' is normally heard in tandem with 'Bridge'. The Golden Gate bridge is a vermilion suspension bridge that was the longest of its kind when completed in 1937; though that record has been surpassed, it remains one of the world's longest bridges and an engineering marvel.
10. With all these colors, we can go painting! Which of these artsy geographical features does NOT exist?

Answer: Painted Marsh

A geographical feature described as 'painted' often (but not always) refers to stratified layers or minerals that create bands of colors. The Painted Desert is in northeast Arizona, near the Petrified Forest National Park. The Painted Hills are in northern Oregon, and are rich in fossil remains. Painted Canyon Overlook is a part of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, a park comprised of badlands in western North Dakota.
