Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is another name for Hitler's master race 'Aryan'?

Answer: Herrenvolk

'Herrenvolk' is the term that Hitler used in German to describe his 'master race'. 'Herdenvolk', by contrast, referred to peoples who, in the eyes of Nazi ideology, needed to be led by the 'Master Race'. 'Die Rasse' simply means 'race'.
2. Which German president died in 1934?

Answer: Hindenburg

Hindenburg died in 1934. Since Hitler's appointment as Chancellor early in 1933, he had been little more than a figurehead.
3. What organization did boys have to join once they reached the age of 14?

Answer: Hitler-Jugend

Once boys reached the age of 14 they had to join the "Hitler-Jugend" (or "Hitler Youth" in English). In some respects it was rather like the boy scouts but they would 'play war' and sing songs about war. Simply, Hitler wanted to prepare them for war.

The corresponding organization for girls was somewhat oddly name the Bund deutscher Mädel. 'Mädel' is a primarily Bavarian word and roughly the same flavour as 'lass(es)' in English - 'League of German Lasses'!
4. What was the bunker called, which is located in East Prussia and was the place of a assassination attempt in 1944?

Answer: Wolfsschanze

The Wolfsschanze was located in East Prussia and many important meetings were held there. Claus von Stauffenberg and some other Germans tried to assassinate Hitler, but it failed and most of the rebels were executed without trial.
5. Who planted the bomb in Hitler's headquarters on 20th July 1944?

Answer: Claus von Stauffenberg

Claus von Stauffenberg was the man. The others listed were also involved in the plot. However, it failed.
6. What were the groups called that were used behind the lines in the Soviet Union to hunt down Jews and slaughter them?

Answer: Einsatzgruppen

The Einsatzgruppen were a separate group from the SS that Hitler used to track down any Jews in the Soviet Union and kill them on the spot. They were sometimes assisted in this by units of the regular army and also in some parts of the Soviet Union by local volunteers.
7. Who was in command of the German troops at the Battle of Stalingrad?

Answer: Paulus

Paulus was in command of the troops at Stalingrad and they were heavily defeated by the Red Army.
8. What was the name of the German armed forces (as a whole) under Hitler?

Answer: Wehrmacht

The Wehrmacht consisted of the Heer (army), the Kriegsmarine (navy) and the Luftwaffe (air force). When West Germany was allowed to create a new army in 1955 it was called the 'Bundeswehr'. (There was no German army between the defeat of the Third Reich and the formation of the Bundeswehr).
9. What was the name of Hitler's wife, who committed suicide along with Hitler in 1945?

Answer: Eva Braun

Eva Braun was Hitler's wife and she killed herself along with him in his Berlin bunker.
10. What were the two zones later called that Great Britain and the United States occupied after the war?

Answer: Bizonia

Bizonia was the name given to their zones, and when French later joined with their zone, they were merged into one and called Trizonia.
