Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My favourite liqueur is Baileys Irish Cream. Its ingredients include cream, cocoa, and which Irish alcohol?

Answer: Whiskey

Baileys Irish Cream was invented in the 1970s and is the number one brand of cream liqueurs, selling in nearly every country. The whiskey used is Irish, as is the cream: around 40,000 cows in Ireland are dedicated solely to producing cream for Baileys. With cocoa and vanilla as the other secret ingredients, I like to think of it as chocolate milk for grown ups.

2. One of my favorite drinks is non-alcoholic. I chose it because it originated in my hometown. If I tell you I was born in Atlanta, GA, can you guess it?

Answer: Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola was developed in the 1880s by Dr. John Pemberton. Its name sprang from the fact that it contained coca leaf and kola fruits for flavor. Dr. Pemberton's partner thought that using a 'C' for 'kola' would look better than a 'k'. While it originally contained cocaine leaves, that ingredient was later swapped out.

3. A chai latte is made from a mixture of tea and spices, but my favorite order is a 'dirty' chai. What makes it dirty?

Answer: a shot of espresso

This drink originated in India, but its popularity has spread far and wide. Made with black tea and spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and ginger, the recipe varies. In many coffee stores the drink is served as a latte, which is served with steamed milk.

4. My wife's favourite tipple is a Snakebite. What is that?

Answer: 50/50 mix of lager and cider

Some people like to add a small tot of blackcurrant and it is then called a "Snakebite & Black" or a "Purple Nasty". In the USA sometimes stout is used instead of lager. Some public houses in the U.K. refuse to serve this drink. One famous person who was refused this drink was former US President Bill Clinton in 2001, at the Old Bell Tavern in Harrogate North Yorkshire.

5. While James Bond likes his martinis "shaken, not stirred", all I really want is a dirty martini, sometimes even filthy. But, what makes a martini dirty?

Answer: Splash of olive brine/juice

The "dirty" name was given because when a splash (or more) of olive juice is added, the clear vodka or gin takes on a cloudy appearance. The more olive juice added, the dirtier it becomes. The result is a slightly salty delight.

While some give credit for the creation to a New York bartender, John O'Connor, in the early 1900s, Russians have older records of various brines, from pickle juice to capers, among other things, being added to vodka going back much further in history. They were popularized in the US by FDR in WWII through a variety of stories, one involving Stalin, Churchill and a hangover in Yalta, another with his demands for olives to be smashed before being added to his drink.

Regardless, dirty martinis, like revenge, are best served ice cold. And, as a result, I often have old jars of olives with no juice littering my refrigerator.

6. I like greyhounds! The dog breed, too, but we're talking drinks! Just what goes into a Greyhound?

Answer: vodka and grapefruit juice

The vodka Greyhound was first made in 1945 as an alternative for the screwdriver (which is vodka and orange juice). The Greyhound cocktail was first made with gin in 1930, but I prefer the vodka! If you salt the rim of the glass it is served in, it is called a Salty Dog.

7. Take a shot glass, fill two thirds with Kahlua coffee liqueur, float a layer of Baileys Irish Cream on top, and what cocktail have you just made?

Answer: Baby Guinness

I would have called it an Irish coffee but I guess that name was already taken. Tia Maria is sometimes used instead of Kahlua. The trick to floating the Baileys on top is to pour it on slowly over the back of a cold spoon. This is also the trick to floating the cream on top of an Irish coffee. If you then float Grand Marnier over the Baby Guinness you get what's called a B-52.

8. When I was in the Air Force, my friends and I enjoyed red beers. What do you put into the beer to make it red?

Answer: tomato juice

This drink can also be called a Red Eye or a Bloody Beer, but we just called them red beers.

9. One of my favourite tipples is Perry, but what is it made from?

Answer: pears

Perry is basically made the same as apple cider, but with pears. More recently it has been described as pear cider, but organizations like CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) do not accept this.

10. Need something cool, refreshing, AND pretty? The Tequila Sunrise became especially popular in the 1970s, thanks in large part to the Eagles. Tequila is the liquor involved. Through what orange liquid does the red grenadine "rise"?

Answer: Orange juice

In making a Tequila Sunrise, the tequila and orange juice are poured over ice in a collins or a highball glass. Then the grenadine is guided carefully down the side of the glass so that it reaches the bottom without mixing with the other ingredients, thus creating the appearance of "rising". Some entertaining variations are the Russian Sunrise - use vodka instead of tequila, Southern Sunrise - use Southern Comfort instead of tequila, Florida Sunrise - use equal measures of pineapple and orange juice and the Astronaut Sunrise - use Tang instead of orange juice.
