Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This one is really difficult and overly complex, some might even say it's "All (what language) to me?"

Answer: Greek

The line "it's all Greek to me" dates back to 1599 with William Shakespeare and his play, "The Tragedy of Julius Caesar". It was from a conversation between Cassius and Casca.
2. You go to a party and a stranger walks in. Before you know it, he "breaks the ice". What did he do?

Answer: Started a new conversation

"Break the ice" has a few pop culture references. Britney Spears released a song with that title in 2008 on her "Circus" CD. In the 70s, "Break The Ice" was a popular kids' game where you tried to avoid destroying the structure even though you hit cubes with a tiny hammer.
3. If you almost won the race, they may saracastically yell, "Close but no _____"

Answer: Cigar

Back in the 19th Century, it was common to give consolation prizes at the fair if you lost. Guess what was one of the most popular gift? Yes, a cigar!
4. You complained after receiving socks again for Christmas. What animal completes this phrase: "Don't look a gift ______ in the mouth"?

Answer: Horse

How do you figure out how old a horse is? You look closely at their teeth, which continue to grow (and also to be worn down from chewing) as they age. It was considered a sign of distrust to examine their teeth closely before a gift or sale.
5. Odd to be compared to a musical instrument, but if you're in great shape a friend may proclaim "you're as fit as a ______"

Answer: Fiddle

This phrase goes back to Thomas Dekker in 1603, who coined "fine as a fiddle". It progressed to "fit as a fiddle" a couple of decades later.
6. Surprise! It caught you so off-guard that what piece of clothing flew off your body in the phrase "Knock your _______ off"?

Answer: Socks

When Pepsi introduced Mountain Dew in the 1960s, "knock your socks off" was used as their campaign slogan.
7. Why could some argue that "money doesn't grow on trees" is actually a false statement?

Answer: Paper comes from trees

If money doesn't grow on trees, then why do banks have "branches"? In some countries, printed bills are made using plastics or plant fibers, and not traditional paper sources.
8. If you give it your all and take a risk, you are "swinging for the _______"?

Answer: Fences

This is an obvious baseball analogy describing the situation in which a player tries to hit a home run with a powerful swing. The record for most career home runs in Major League Baseball is tainted as the current leader, Barry Bonds, has been accused of steroid use in setting the record.
9. Is the correct meat used here? You get passed over a job promotion and say: "What am I, chopped liver"?

Answer: Yes

French pâté de foie gras sounds exotic and fancy, but it's just another recipe made up of that liver your mom made you eat growing up. One big benefit of eating liver? It's loaded with vitamin A and iron.
10. President Harry S. Truman advised us, "If you can't stand the heat" where should you get out of? No, it's not Florida.

Answer: Kitchen

There are two ways to take that popular saying. One version means, if the stress and effort isn't worth the payoff, then it's best to give it up. Another way to look at it is to consider that, if you're not up to the challenge, you should let someone take over.
