Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Greek myth, what was the creature which had the body of a lion with the head of an eagle?

Answer: Gryphon

A Gryphon is a combination of the king of the jungle (lion) and king of the sky (eagle). You can see why the Greeks looked up to these guys, and made statues of them to ornament so many of their buildings.
2. In Egyptian myth, what has the head of a man and body of a lion?

Answer: Sphinx

The Greeks also had legends of Sphinxes, which were malevolent winged lions with the heads of human women. Although the Great Sphinx of Giza is the most famous of the Egyptian depictions of these creatures, there are many statues of them throughout Egypt and the rest of the world.
3. A creature often called the "Chinese unicorn" is usually depicted as a scaled tiger surrounded by flames and with a dragon's head. What is this creature?

Answer: Ki-Lin

Though the Ki-Lin (also called Qilin or Chi-Lin) is depicted many different ways, it usually looks like a combination of tiger and dragon. A Ki-Lin is a symbol of luck and fortune.
4. A creature of Persian origin, this monster has the head of a man with many rows of sharp teeth, a lion's body and a scorpion's tail.

Answer: Manticore

The beast's name means "man-eater" and many early historians hoped to prove that such a monster really existed. Luckily, they don't... the man-eating cats which we've already got are vicious enough.
5. Sometimes called "asuras", these monsters from Hindu belief are poisonous shape-changers who dabble in magic, and are ruled over by Ravana.

Answer: Raksasha

Raksashas take on many forms and many roles in Hindu legends. Every so often, there's even a good and helpful one... but most often not. Ravana, King of the Raksashas, had ten heads and a massive body, with a murderous disposition.
6. What was the half-man, half-bull monster in Greek myth who awaited the condemned at the center of the Labyrinth?

Answer: Minotaur

Despite being the child of royalty (his parents were Queen Pasiphae and the Cretan Bull), the Minotaur had a pretty bad life and was eventually killed by Theseus after spending a long time trapped in the Labyrinth, killing whoever was sent inside.
7. A Japanese lake dwelling monster, this creature is the size of a human child, with reptilian skin and a bald head.

Answer: Kappa

Kappa are goblin-like monsters which make mischief in the human world. They often look like turtles which have a few human-like features, such as hands and walking upright.
8. A creature appearing in the myths of many lands, this fiery bird was supposed to be able to be reborn after death.

Answer: Phoenix

The phoenix is a symbol of rebirth and resilience, one of the more commonly used ancient symbols in the modern world. It was said to be reborn out of the ashes of its own body.
9. This Scottish monster appears to be a horse, but is actually aquatic and murderous.

Answer: Kelpie

The Kelpie appears as a beautiful horse to lure poor unfortunates to the water, so that it may drown and eat them.
10. A massive bird, said to be able to swallow elephants, which was famous for battling Sinbad the Sailor.

Answer: Roc

The Roc probably most famously appears in "1,001 Nights", as a massive bird which held a grudge against all humanity for one of its eggs being broken.
11. A multi-headed Greek monster, this beast had the body and head of a lion, the head of a goat, and a tail which was a snake.

Answer: Chimera

The term is often now used for a combination of different elements all jumbled together, but the ancient Chimera was a weird looking creature which resembled a lion with a goat and a snake growing out of it.
12. Irish legend holds that these creatures were seals which could shed off their skin and walk around in human form.

Answer: Selkie

Supposedly, a Selkie can be prevented from returning to the sea if you find and hide its skin while it walks about in human form. There are legends of men marrying Selkie brides, as long as they can keep the skin hidden.
13. Native American legend held that the beating of this creature's massive wings created thunder.

Answer: Thunderbird

A legend shared by many tribes, the Thunderbird (or Thunderbirds, depending on the legend) created thunder as it flew. Depictions of the Thunderbird usually present it as having horn-like protrusions on its head.
14. In Scandinavian legend, these creatures lived in caves and subterranean dwellings. They were the enemies of humanity, but would turn to stone if they were caught in the sunlight. What were they?

Answer: Trolls

Trolls were also associated with the giants of Norse legend, the Jotun. As such, they were frightened by thunder and lightning, which the Trolls associated with their old enemy Thor the god of thunder.
15. Appearing in different forms depending on the culture which depicts them, these reptilian creatures nearly always have serpentine bodies and scales. Many of them breathe fire.
