Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Luca is the titular character and main protagonist of the movie "Luca". The equivalent of what job does he do for his family?

Answer: Shepherd

Luca Paguro starts off as a quiet and timid sea monster who has only heard horror stories of the 'land monsters' on the surface from his parents. Luca, who starts off as a sort-of underwater shepherd for his family's goatfish, dreams about going up, and it becomes a reality when he meets another sea monster called Alberto. Alberto actually lives on the surface and, through their friendship, Alberto opens Luca's eyes to what the world is like.

Luca is voiced by Jacob Tremblay, a Canadian actor. He already had much experience as a voice actor as he voiced the main character of the children's show "Pete the Cat". At the time of the film's release, Jacob was only 14 years old.
2. Alberto Scorfano becomes Luca's first friend. Where does Alberto call home?

Answer: A lighthouse on an island

Alberto is an outgoing and adventurous young sea monster who lives alone on the Isola del Mare in an abandoned lighthouse. He enjoys terrorizing fishermen who come too close to the island and collecting the things they drop into the sea. He meets Luca and they strike up an unlikely friendship, but this allows Alberto to open up about how hurt he is feeling that his father abandoned him. Alberto gets jealous of Luca's friendship with Giulia but finally realizes that friendships are strong and Luca has room for more than one.

Alberto is voiced by Jack Dylan Grazer, an American actor. He played the main character in the television shows "Me, Myself & I" as well as "We Are Who We Are". At the time of the film's release, Grazer was 17 years old.

Scorfano, in Italian, means scorpionfish.
3. Giulia Marcovaldo befriends both Luca and Alberto. What do they call themselves, especially when facing Ercole?

Answer: The Underdogs

Giulia Marcovaldo is an outgoing and headstrong character who is somewhat of an outsider in the town of Portorosso. She spends most of the year in Genova (Genoa) with her mother but comes to the town to spend the summer with her father, Massimo, and also to compete in the Portorosso Cup. When meeting Alberto and Luca, the three form a group which they call 'the Underdogs.' She comes off a bit weird, but, her need to win the Portorosso Cup is to show that weird is okay and that you don't have to follow the crowd. Giulia has no filters, saying whatever comes to mind, and this makes her a great friend to the shy Luca.

Emma Berman is the voice of Giulia. She is an American actress whose other role before the movie was a minor character in one episode of "Go! Go! Cory Carson". She was only 12 years old when the movie was released.
4. Massimo Marcovaldo is Giulia's father and a good cook. How does he make his living?

Answer: Fisherman

Massimo is a stoic and powerful-looking character with a huge heart. He works very hard to make a living as a fisherman and he loves his daughter very much. His job is that much more difficult because he was born with only one arm. However, he uses his one good arm very deftly, able to wield all sorts of knives and tools in order to prepare good food and catch fish.

Massimo is voiced by Marco Barricelli, an American actor who started his career on stage. He has had a number of roles as a voice actor for video games as well as a few roles in television shows.

The surname, Marcovaldo, refers to a 1963 book by Italo Calvino subtitled "The Seasons in the City". Calvino was an anti-fascist journalist who fought against Mussolini in World War II.

One last thing, the resemblance between Massimo and his cat, Machiavelli, is quite striking!
5. Ercole Visconti is the main antagonist in the movie "Luca". He competes against Luca, Alberto and Giulia in the Portorosso Cup. How many times in a row has he won the race?

Answer: Five

Ercole is the main antagonist of the movie. He is very egotistical, self-centered, and interested in being better than everyone else. He takes pride in his material possessions, his Vespa, his sweater, his sandwiches, and he is always looking to get more. He is a bully who intimidates all of the kids in the town, and especially his two sidekicks, Ciccio and Guido. He has won the Portorosso Cup five times in a row, and is seeking to win a record sixth time, even though he may actually be too old to enter into the race.

Ercole is voiced by Saverio Raimondo, an Italian actor, who also voices Ercole in the Italian version of the film. He has had a few roles in Italian television, but this is his first Hollywood billing.

The name 'Ercole' is the Italian name for the Roman hero Hercules. The two characters are at polar opposites to each other, though Ercole probably wishes that he was Hercules.
6. Luca's mother is called Daniela. She and Luca have an interesting way to say "I love you." How do they do it?

Answer: Looking each other in the eye

Daniela Paguro is an overbearing and protective mother, but that is just because she loves Luca very much. By the end of the movie she realizes that if you love someone, you have to give them the space to make their own decisions. She is able to find it in her heart to let Luca go off on his own to school. When she and Luca say "I love you" to each other, they look each other in the eye so that the other knows that they really mean it.

Daniela's voice is done by Maya Rudolph, an American comedienne and actress. This is not her first Disney film that she is doing voice acting for; previously, she was the voice of Aunt Cass in "Big Hero 6".
7. Lorenzo Paguro is Luca's father. What hobby does he have, one that he is quite emphatic about?

Answer: Raising show crabs

Lorenzo Paguro is an absent-minded father and husband. He is often distracted by things, like raising his champion crabs that compete in crab shows (though the Branzino family is usually the winner of the show). Despite his shortcomings, Lorenzo loves both Daniela as well as Luca very much and he is willing to do what it takes to keep them safe and happy.

Jim Gaffigan is the voice of Lorenzo. Gaffigan is a comedian and actor that hails from Illinois, USA. Aside from his stand up comedy shows, Gaffigan has appeared in numerous television shows and movies, and previously for Disney on the television show "Star vs. the Forces of Evil".

The last name, Paguro, means 'hermit crab' in Italian.
8. Uncle Ugo is Lorenzo's brother who lives in the deep part of the sea. What is his preferred food?

Answer: Dead whale carcass

Uncle Ugo is an amusing minor character. He is Lorenzo's brother who lives in the deep part of the sea, which is why he resembles an anglerfish and he is mostly transparent. He also has a breathing problem when he is close to the surface that can be remedied by punching him in the heart (there is too much oxygen for him near the top). As a deep-dweller, he says his favourite food is whale carcass which Ugo claims just falls into your mouth.

Late in the movie, a poster with Ugo's likeness appears on a wall in Portorosso with the caption "Attacco Del Mostro Marino". Translated from Italian, this means 'Attack of the Sea Monster'.

Uncle Ugo is voiced by the amusing Sacha Baron Cohen, a British actor known for his characters Borat and Ali G, amongst others. As for voice acting, you've probably heard his voice as King Julien in the "Madagascar" movies. As you can see, Cohen's characters are all wacky or crazy, something that explains Uncle Ugo's behaviour.
9. How does Luca's grandmother sleep?

Answer: With her eyes open

Grandma Paguro is Daniela Paguro's mother and Luca's grandmother. She is an easygoing character with an adventurous spirit. When Luca first asks where boats come from, Grandma Paguro admits that she goes to the surface and even into the town of Portorosso (where she plays cards with the locals). When Luca first starts hanging out with Alberto and going to the surface, Grandma Paguro figures it out but doesn't tell Daniela. She also provides a bit of reason, like when she helps her daughter let Luca go off to school by saying "he knows how to find the good ones."

Sandy Martin, an American actress, does the voice for Grandma Paguro. Apart from her well-known role in "Napoleon Dynamite," she has done a few minor voice roles for Disney in the past.
10. Ciccio and Guido are Ercole's two goons. What does Ercole make them do to one another when they make a mistake?

Answer: Slap each other in the face

Ciccio and Guido act as two minor characters who start of as Ercole's henchmen, doing whatever he bids them to do. This includes Ciccio throwing himself under Ercole's Vespa so that it won't get scratched, providing Ercole with very large sandwiches, and providing Ercole with harpoons so that Ercole will be the one to spear a sea monster. Throughout the movie, Ercole abuses them, calling them names and making them slap one another. However, at the end of the movie, when Ercole tells the two "Ah, idioti! Be useful for once in your pathetic lives," they realize that they can break free from Ercole and toss him into the fountain in the town square.

Ciccio and Guido are voices by Peter Sohn and Lorenzo Crisci, respectively. Peter Sohn is a longtime employee of Pixar Studios, having directed "The Good Dinosaur" and being the inspiration for the character of Russell in the movie "Up".
