Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2003, Cate Blanchett starred in a film, based on a true story, as an Irish journalist with the surname Guerin, who was brutally murdered by drug lords for her investigations into Dublin's drug trade. Which of these is her first name? (Please note that the film's title was simply her full name.)

Answer: Veronica

Veronica Guerin was murdered in 1996 after her journalistic investigations into the drug trade in Dublin, Ireland. She had previously received various threats, directed also at her son, and was even shot in the leg, but she persevered with her work despite the risks. She was shot to death with six bullets while in her car at traffic lights.

In general, the film was not very well received; most praise went to Cate Blanchett's performance as Veronica, and she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama, and for an Empire Award for Best Actress, both of which she lost out on. A few years earlier, in 2000, the film "When The Sky Falls" was also based on Veronica Guerin's life; however, the names of real-life people were changed in the movie, something that was not done in "Veronica Guerin".
2. The title character doesn't actually appear in the 1940 film "Rebecca"; rather she is already dead by the time the events begin. Who then is the female protagonist, who remains unnamed?

Answer: The new wife of Rebecca's widower

"Rebecca" was based on the novel of the same name by English author Daphne du Maurier. Laurence Olivier starred as aristocrat Maxim de Winter, with Joan Fontaine as his second wife, who is not given a name in the novel nor the film. Maxim is still in love with his deceased first wife, Rebecca, and when he brings the second Mrs. de Winter to his home after getting married within weeks of meeting, she is disconcerted to see how much of Rebecca's presence remains. One of the housekeepers, Mrs. Danvers, refuses to accept the new Mrs. de Winter, and soon new evidence comes to light questioning Rebecca's apparent suicide.

"Rebecca" was nominated for an astonishing 11 Academy Awards, including Best Actor and Best Actress, and won two, which were Best Picture and Best Cinematography for a black-and-white film.
3. A house cleaner, Vera Drake, eponymous character of the 2004 movie, was sentenced to prison time for carrying out which illegal activity, without her family's knowledge?

Answer: Backstreet abortions

Vera Drake is a family-oriented women, whose family is poor but devoted to each other. She works as a house cleaner to make ends meet, but, performing many acts of kindness in general, she views the illegal abortions she performs as a charitable act, and therefore does not charge her clients. Unsurprisingly, because illegal abortions performed by untrained individuals can be extremely dangerous and often fatal, one of Vera's clients almost dies from the procedure, and Vera is arrested for what she has done. Her son finds her actions unforgivable, and none of her employers will now provide a reference for her, despite her hard work at her job. Rather than the expected minimum sentence, Vera is sentenced to two and a half years in prison, the increased sentence hopefully acting as a deterrent to others.

Vera was played by Imelda Staunton, who won several awards for her performance, and was nominated for an Academy Award.
4. "Hanna" (2011) tells the story of a young girl who has been trained by her father since her infancy to murder the woman pursuing him. Which Irish-American actress played Hanna?

Answer: Saoirse Ronan

Hanna's father, Erik, is an ex-CIA operative, who has knowledge of a secret that cannot be publicized, and so goes into hiding in Finland with the then two-year-old Hanna. Marissa Wiegler works for the CIA and wants Erik dead, thus he trains Hanna as an assassin to kill Wiegler when the time comes. As she has been brought up in the Arctic wilderness, she has no knowledge of modern culture, nor even electricity. The film takes place when Hanna is 15 and 16 years old.

The film was a success, and Saoirse Ronan, who was 17 years old in 2011, was nominated for a Young Artist Award for Best Leading Young Actress in a feature film.
5. This 1967 movie starred Julie Andrews as a young girl whose goal is to work as a stenographer for a rich businessman and then to marry him. Also starring James Fox and Mary Tyler Moore, this film is called "Thoroughly Modern ____". Complete the title.

Answer: Millie

Despite falling in love with another man, Millie Dillmount continues her quest to find a wealthy boss and marry him. When she is hired by Trevor Graydon, she attempts to seduce him, but he rejects her advances, and instead falls in love with her friend, Miss Dorothy. Miss Dorothy finds herself the intended victim of trafficking to Beijing by the woman who runs the hotel she is staying in!

"Thoroughly Modern Millie" won an Academy Award for Best Original Score, and Carol Channing, who played an eccentric woman whom Millie, Miss Dorothy and Jimmy met, won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress.
6. "Elizabeth" was a 1998 film based on the life of Queen Elizabeth I of England. Naturally, movies based on the past take historical liberties in order to fit the plot. Which of these facts is incorrect and was shown in the film?

Answer: Elizabeth and her friend Katherine "Kat" Ashley were around the same age.

The film shows the earlier years of Elizabeth's reign, and the following synopsis is based on the film rather than history, although much of the film is accurate. Elizabeth takes the throne after the death of Mary I, her half-sister, and although courted by suitors, she finds no husband, and instead begins an affair with her childhood sweetheart, Robert Dudley, who was Earl of Leicester. She throws him out when she discovers that he is married, and becomes very tough and ruthless following this. She has to deal with many problems during her reign, such as her cousin, Mary, Queen of Scots (who is Catholic while Elizabeth is Protestant), conspiring against her.

The film was a success, winning multiple awards, including an Academy Award for Best Makeup, and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) for Cate Blanchett, who played Elizabeth.

Regarding the answer options: Kat Ashley was approximate 30 years older than Elizabeth, yet the women were shown in the film to be around the same age. The other three facts are historically correct; Dudley's wife (incidentally, she was called Amy, not Isabel) died after breaking her neck in a fall, rather than being poisoned by one of Elizabeth's dresses as shown in the film. The film shows Elizabeth discovering Dudley's marriage and throwing him out, when in reality it was a very open arrangement and all at court had knowledge of it. Finally, while the film shows Mary of Guise being poisoned by Elizabeth's adviser, in real life she died of edema nine years previously to the setting of the scene.
7. "S1m0ne" (2002) is the story of a film director who creates a computer-generated woman to star in his movie when the real actress drops out. However, the entertainment world then becomes intrigued about her, and demands a live appearance. Which actor played the director dragged into a series of events that changes his life?

Answer: Al Pacino

Al Pacino played director Viktor Taransky, who creates his virtual actress and names her Simone, based on the name of the program that made her, "Simulation One". The media and viewers do not realize that she is not a real actress, and soon everyone wants to know more about her. Viktor tries to dampen the media obsession by claiming she is a recluse, and then tries to ruin her career by attributing a tasteless film about zoophilia to her, but this all backfires and makes her even more famous. Eventually he "kills" Simone by erasing her and burying the hardware at sea, but ends up charged with her murder!

"S1m0ne" was reasonably successful, receiving mixed criticism. The actress who played the title character (or perhaps "character"!), Rachel Roberts, was uncredited for the role in the theatrical version of the film; instead the credits read "Introducing Simone as herself"!

Al Pacino, born in 1940, is more famous for playing gangsters, with roles in movies including "The Godfather" (1972), "Scarface" (1983), and "Carlito's Way" (1993). He has been nominated for numerous Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards, and he won the Best Actor Oscar for "Scent of a Woman" (1992).
8. In the 2012 version of "Anna Karenina", directed by Joe Wright, the eponymous character marries her lover and lives happily with him.

Answer: False

Unfortunately, the film ends much the same way as Leo Tolstoy's 1877 novel. Anna, although married to a man many years her senior, falls in love with the young Count Vronsky. She manages to temporarily convince her husband that the stories about the couple are merely gossip; however, eventually he realizes the truth and she confesses to him. They split, but after Anna nearly dies delivering Vronsky's child, they live together again, Karenin having sent Vronsky away, much to Anna's misery. Thus she leaves to be with Vronsky again, but the two have a difficult relationship, and eventually Anna commits suicide by throwing herself under a train.

The movie was not as well as received as was anticipated, and even won a dubious award from the Alliance of Women Film Journalists for being a "Movie You Wanted To Love But Just Couldn't"!
9. Julie Walters starred as a working-class girl looking to improve herself by studying literature at the Open University in the film "Educating Rita" (1983). Which actor starred as her alcoholic professor?

Answer: Michael Caine

In spite of her limited education, Rita is very enthusiastic about her study, which brings inspiration to the disillusioned professor, Frank, played by Michael Caine. She believes that educated people enjoy better lives than the uneducated, but as she gets to know Frank, she begins to realize that it is not as simple as that.

Based on a play by Willy Russell, "Educating Rita" was praised by critics, and won Best Film, Best Actor, and Best Actress at the British Academy Film Awards. It was Julie Walters's debut in film, and she also played the role of Rita in the stage play.

Michael Caine was born in 1933, and is a very famous figure in British cinema. Remarkably, he is the only person other than Jack Nicholson to have been nominated for an Academy Award in every decade from the 1960s to the 2000s! He is known for his distinctive London accent, and has starred in movies such as "The Italian Job" (1969) and "Batman Begins" (2005).
10. In 1997, Jennifer Lopez starred as the title character in "Selena", which was based on the life of singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, who was sadly murdered at only 23. In real life and also the movie, which of these people committed the horrifying crime?

Answer: The president of her fan club

"Selena" was the breakthrough role for Jennifer Lopez, and was her third film. She was subjected to much criticism from Selena's fans and the Latino community, who objected to the actress having Puerto Rican parents rather than Mexican. However, after seeing her performance, the response was largely positive from both viewers and critics. The film won four ALMA (American Latino Media Arts) Awards, and was nominated for several others, including a Golden Globe and a Grammy.

Selena and her siblings joined her father's band, and while they did not enjoy much success with their music, Selena was noticed and released five studio albums and a live album. Her fan club was managed by Yolanda Saldívar; however, Saldívar apparently had disliked Selena before, and only approached her about creating a fan club when she was rejected by another Tejano artist. She became manager of Selena's boutiques, and was discovered to be embezzling money from the singer. When Selena confronted her, Saldívar shot her in the shoulder as she turned her back on her, severing an artery and leading to Selena's death from blood loss.
