Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We start our tour of "won't-be" weddings with this 1999 offering that reunites Richard Gere and Julia Roberts, the stars of 1990's "Pretty Woman". What film, from director Garry Marshall, also included appearances by "Pretty Woman" alums Hector Elizondo and Kathleen Marshall?

Answer: Runaway Bride

Richard Gere and Julie Roberts displayed such a wonderful on-screen chemistry in 1990's smash hit "Pretty Woman" that they were reunited nearly ten years later in 1999's "Runaway Bride". Both films were directed by Garry Marshall. In "Runaway Bride", Gere plays a world-weary journalist who writes for "USA Today" and misreports a story about a woman who seems to get engaged and then skip out on the weddings. When Gere investigates the woman played by Roberts, he falls in love with her.

Also appearing in "Runaway Bride" are the excellent character actor Hector Elizondo and director Marshall's daughter, Kathleen Marshall. Funnyman Larry Miller also a veteran of "Pretty Woman" has a cameo in "Runaway Bride".
2. Singing the hits of the 1980s at other people's weddings is a tough enough job. But when singer Robbie is left at the altar by his fiancée, he is singing "Love Stinks" instead of "White Wedding". In what 1998 offering does Adam Sandler play the lovelorn singer Robbie Hart?

Answer: The Wedding Singer

Adam Sandler, the former "Saturday Night" funnyman and star of such films as "Billy Madison" and "Happy Gilmore" plays the jilted groom in 1998's "The Wedding Singer". Sandler is Robbie Hart, a favorite entertainer for weddings in his New Jersey home, who is dumped by his longtime fiancée at the altar. Drew Barrymore is a waitress at the weddings where Robbie performs. The two become friends as Julia sets out to plan her own wedding. Robbie learns that Julia's boyfriend cheats on her and, coincidentally, that he is in love with her. In the end, with the help of 1980s rock star Billy Idol, Robbie and Julia finally realize their feelings for each other and end up in a wedding of their own.

"The Wedding Singer" is as much a paean to the music and trends of the 1980s as it is about weddings. In addition to Billy Idol and Sandler singing, the film features the musical styling's of actors Jon Lovitz and Steve Buscemi, as well a rousing performance of "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang and 85 year old "rapping grandma" Ellen Dow. Sandler and Barrymore displayed a touching onscreen chemistry that led to their starring together in 2004's "50 First Dates" and 2014's "Blended".
3. Sometimes it is the groom who bolts before the wedding. Believing that his one true love is happily married to another, Hugh Grant sets to tie himself to his safe, former girlfriend but leaves her at the altar for Andie McDowell, in what 1994 classic?

Answer: Four Weddings and a Funeral

Hugh Grant has made a career out of playing handsome but awkward characters in a slew of romantic comedic movies. For my money, his best performance was in 1994's "Four Weddings and a Funeral". Grant plays befuddled bachelor, Charles, who is always a groomsman and never a groom at his friends' weddings. During one such affair, he meets the beautiful American, Carrie, played by Andie McDowell. McDowell gives one of her most natural performances as she is allowed to use her native South Carolina accent. Carrie announces she is also getting married and invites Charles and his friends. While at Carrie's wedding Charles' friend Gareth dies of a heart attack. After a somber but stirring funeral eulogy given by Gareth's lover, played by John Hannah, Charles determines to settle down with his safe, if uninspiring, former girlfriend Henrietta.

As Charles is about to become the groom in the fourth wedding, he meets Carrie again, who is now divorced. Charles' brother, who is deaf, using sign language, urges his brother to follow his heart. Charles stops his own wedding and leaves with Carrie. The end scene is of Charles and Carrie not getting married but living happily ever after nonetheless. "Four Weddings and a Funeral" was nominated for eight BAFTA Awards, winning four awards, including a Best Actor for Grant and Best Direction for Mike Newell. The film was nominated for two Oscars, losing the Best Picture award to "Forest Gump" and Best Original Screenplay award to Quentin Tarantino and "Pulp Fiction".
4. 1967's "The Graduate" jumpstarted the career of Dustin Hoffman. As the movie nears its end, Hoffman's character, Ben, runs into the church to stop the wedding of his true love Elaine. What young actress played the part of Elaine Robinson?

Answer: Katherine Ross

Katherine Ross, then 26, played the beautiful young daughter of Anne Bancroft, then only 34 in "The Graduate". Ross had appeared in a few films with small roles before her role in "The Graduate". Ross won the Golden Globe Award for Best New Star and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Ross went on to co-star in 1969's "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and 1975's "The Stepford Wives".

"The Graduate" was based on the 1963 book by Charles Webb. Hoffman, although 28 years old at the time, brilliantly plays the confused, disaffected 21-year-old recent college "graduate" who is seduced by an older woman played by Anne Bancroft. Ross, playing Elaine Robinson, falls for Hoffman's Ben only to become repulsed when she learns of her mother's affair with him. Later, Elaine is set to marry a man who her mother says is "better" than Ben. In response, Ben (Hoffman) launches a desperate attempt to stop the wedding and reclaim his true love. Despite the anger on her mother's face, Elaine gleefully abandons her wedding and runs off with Ben.

Candace Bergen and Natalie Wood were among the slew of talented actresses that were considered for the role of Elaine Robinson. Such diverse stars as Jean Moreau, Doris Day, Patricia Neal and Patty Duke were rumored to have been considered for the role of Mrs. Robinson.
5. I think we can all agree that hiring a male escort as your date at your sister's wedding, to make the man who dumped you at the altar jealous, is a bad idea. However, it is a wonderful premise for a comedy movie. What star of television's "Will & Grace" plays the jilted bride who hires "The Wedding Date"?

Answer: Debra Messing

Debra Messing is perhaps best known for her role as the interior designer Grace Adler on the American television program "Will and Grace". Messing was nominated four times and won the 2003 Emmy award for Outstanding Actress in Comedy Series for "Will & Grace". In 2005 Messing and her "Will and Grace" co-star Megan Mullally were recipients of The Lucy Award an honor (named for Lucille Ball) presented by the Women in Film organization for outstanding contributions in television and movies, by women.

In a rare movie appearance Messing starred in 2005's "The Wedding Date". Messing played Kat Ellis whose younger sister, Amy (Amy Adams), is getting married. The Best Man is Kat's former fiancé named Jeff. So to make Jeff jealous Kat hires a hot male escort played by Dylan McDermott to be her date. In the course of the pre-wedding festivities' we learn Jeff canceled his wedding to Kat after a tryst with Amy. Amy's intended learns of the former affair and threatens to refuse to go down the aisle. However, it is Nick, the male escort, who saves the day and the wedding. In the course of the action, Kat and Nick realize that the "fake" date is real and fall in love.
6. Picking up a hitchhiker when you are on a race to deliver bootleg beer seems like a bad idea. But when the hitchhiker is Sally Field wearing a wedding dress you stop. In what 1977 comedy do we find runaway bride Field join a notorious trucking daredevil in a race across the south of the US?

Answer: Smokey and the Bandit

"Smokey and the Bandit" is a classic comedy starring Burt Reynolds as a truck driver up for anything. Reynolds pairs with country western singer Jerry Reed to win a bet by delivering a truckload of bootleg beer across the US south in under 48 hours. Reynolds is the rabbit who drives his custom Trans Am at breakneck speed to draw off any Smokies, slang for police officers and allow Reed to drive the truck as fast as he can. While driving through Texas, Reynolds finds Sally Field hitchhiking in her wedding dress. In a twist of fate, Fields has skipped out on her wedding to the son of a local country sheriff who has vowed to stop the same Bandit.

"Smokey and the Bandit" featured the wonderful Jackie Gleason as the dogged Sheriff Buford T Justice, Paul McCormack, and singer/songwriter Paul Williams. The movie was directed by former stuntman Hal Needham and marked his directorial debut. "Smokey and the Bandit" grossed over $127,000,000 and was the second highest grossing movie for 1977, trailing only "Star Wars". The movie spawned two sequels and helped double the sales of the Pontiac Trans Am between 1977 and 1979.
7. The potential for polygamy is always a good comedy premise. Patrick "McDreamy" Dempsey plays the perfect groom who is left standing at the altar in front of the cream of New York's high society, when his bride decides to go back to her first husband. What is this 2002 movie, with a US state name in the title?

Answer: Sweet Home Alabama

In 2002's "Sweet Home Alabama", Reese Witherspoon plays Melanie, who leaves her sheltered Southern life with blue collar husband Jake (Josh Lucas) and reinvents herself as a New York fashion designer. In New York, she meets and falls in love with the wealthy and up and coming son of the Mayor of New York. When Andrew (Patrick Dempsey) asks Melanie to marry him, against his powerful mother's wishes (Candice Bergen), we learn Melanie is already married. Melanie returns home to her good ol' boy Alabama husband to beg him to sign the divorce papers he has sat on for seven years.

In classic rom/com fashion, Jake does everything to avoid signing the divorce papers. When he does, and Melanie gets set to marry the prince-like Andrew, she realizes that her true love is still in her "sweet home" of Alabama. Despite a likable cast and the use of the Lynyrd Skynyrd classic "Sweet Home Alabama" as a theme song, the movie was both poorly received by critics and audiences alike. Interestingly, "Sweet Home Alabama" was the first movie to be filmed in New York after the 9/11 attacks.
8. Patrick Dempsey gets the girl when he realizes that he loves his best friend just as she is about to get married to another man. In what 2008 movie does Michelle Monaghan unceremoniously dump her groom at the wedding ceremony to marry Dempsey instead?

Answer: Made of Honor

While Patrick Dempsey plays the left at the altar groom in 2002's "Sweet Home Alabama", he is the wedding breaker in 2008's "Made of Honor". Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan play college best friends. When Hannah (Monaghan) comes back from a trip to Scotland engaged, she asks Tom (Dempsey) to be her maid of honor. Dempsey accepts even though he has now realized that his life of emotionless relationships is unfulfilling and that he really wants to settle down with Hannah. Hannah initially rebuffs him but when Dempsey's Tom rides into the wedding on a horse (he falls off in the chapel) Hannah realizes she loves him as well.

"Made of Honor" earned over 100 million in worldwide box office, despite receiving poor reviews. The film marked the last screen performance of revered film director/producer and occasional actor Sydney Pollack, who died shortly after the film's opening. Kevin McKidd, who plays the jilted groom Colin in "Made of Honor", joined the cast of "Grey's Anatomy" in its fifth season to star alongside Patrick Dempsey where both actors played intense doctors.
9. With a title like "Bride Wars", you expect there to be some wedding drama. Two best friends plan their weddings for the same day and turn into bridezillas to one-up each other. However in the end, one of the bride's decides to call off her wedding at the last second. What Academy Award winning actress plays the feisty Emma in "Bride Wars"?

Answer: Anne Hathaway

Academy Award winning actress Anne Hathaway started her career in the short-lived 1999 American television series "Get Real". One of her co-stars also making his debut was "Social Network" star Jesse Eisenberg. 2001's "The Princess Diaries" established Hathaway as an up and coming movie star and roles in 2004's "Ella Enchanted and 2006's "The Devil Wears Prada" cemented her A List status. Hathaway won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Fantine in 2012's "Les Misérables".

"Bride Wars" is polarizing film with a large cult following, a successful international box office and some of the worst critical ratings of any romantic comedy. The film stars Kate Hudson and Hathaway as best friends who both decide to get married on the same day, in the same hotel, using the same wedding planner. The two would-be friends then set about to sabotage the other's wedding. Horrified family and friends can only watch as Hudson and Hathaway turn into the worst bridezilla monsters. During the course of the events, Hathaway's Emma realizes she no longer loves her intended groom Fletcher (Chris Pratt) and calls off her wedding as she is walking down the aisle.
10. We end our tour of "unbridled" movies with 2001's "The Wedding Planner", where Brigette Wilson-Sampras learns the lesson that you never hire Jennifer Lopez to plan your wedding. Who plays the handsome groom who dumps his bride to run off with wedding planner Lopez?

Answer: Matthew McConaughey

Matthew McConaughey is the 2014 Oscar winner for his portrayal of an AIDS patient going to desperate measures to obtain life saving drugs in "The Dallas Buyers Club". McConaughey, however, is equally well known as a romantic comedy heartthrob with a penchant for removing his shirt on screen. McConaughey earned a loyal following of fans from appearances in "Magic Mike", "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" and "Sahara" to name but a few of his leading roles.

The plot of "The Wedding Planner" is rather complicated. Jennifer Lopez is the best wedding planner in San Francisco. She agrees to plan the wedding of the gorgeous Fran (Brigette Wilson-Sampras) and then is almost killed in the street when her shoe heel is stuck in a manhole cover. Lopez is saved by a Good Samaritan and the two later share a kiss. Lopez's character Mary then learns that the Good Samaritan is Steve (McConaughey), the fiancé of her new client. Over time Steve and Mary (Lopez) begin to feel an attraction. Despite misgivings, Mary accepts a proposal from a childhood friend named Massimo to placate her father. However, as the weddings draw close Fran and Steve decide they are better friends and no longer in love. Mary's father halts his daughter's wedding when he realizes she is only doing this for him and in the end Steve and Mary are seen kissing.
