Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes' by Crosby, Stills and Nash was released in 1969. Crosby, Stills and Nash occasionally teamed up with another person; who was he?

Answer: Neil Young

What a great song! Crosby, Stills and Nash performed this song about Judy Collins, a former girlfriend of Stephen Stills.

Neil Young joined forces with Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and David Crosby on a fairly regular basis - most notably for the 'Deja Vu' album, released in 1970, which includes another of my favourites, 'Teach Your Children'

Useless information: All four members of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice.
2. Pink Floyd released an album in 1973 which contained another of my favourite tracks, 'Breathe'. Which album was this from?

Answer: Dark Side of the Moon

'Dark Side of the Moon' was Pink Floyd's fabulous concept album. The music for 'Breathe' is credited to David Gilmour and Richard Wright, with the lyrics credited to Roger Waters.

Useless Information: 'Dark Side of the Moon' remained on the Billboard 200 chart for a staggering 741 weeks - more than any other album - and has sold more than 45 million copies world-wide.
3. The next song is Bread's 'Everything I Own' from 1972. What is the missing word from the first line? 'You sheltered me from ___, Kept me warm, kept me warm.'

Answer: Harm

David Gates and Bread were a short-lived but very successful group. Of the 14 singles they released in their eight-year career, 12 were Billboard 100 Top 40 hits (one only reached number 60 and their first single did not chart).

The members of Bread started their career in 1969, splitting up in 1974. They reformed in 1976, releasing one album before disbanding. In 1996, they came together one last time for a 25th anniversary tour.

Useless Information: The band's final 'original' album 'Lost Without Your Love', released in 1977, became their seventh consecutive Gold album as certified by the Recording Industry Association of America.
4. 'We've Only Just Begun' was a track by ... Well I'll leave you to tell me who. Released in 1970 by a brother and sister duo (first names Richard and Karen), the song reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 28 in the UK. Who released this song?

Answer: Carpenters

'We've Only Just Begun' was written by Roger Nichols and Paul Williams; Richard Carpenter heard it as a commercial for an American bank and the rest, as they say, is history.

Useless Information: The duo known usually as The Carpenters are actually just registered as 'Carpenters', without the definite article, on all of their official recordings and press releases. According to the album notes for the 'Carpenters Gold: 35th Anniversary Edition', Richard is quoted as saying "After much thought, we decided to name the act "Carpenters" (No "The"; we thought it sounded hipper without it, like Buffalo Springfield or Jefferson Airplane)".
5. The Eagles, one of the great bands of the 1970s, released a song in 1975 which contained the following lyrics: 'You can't hide your lyin' eyes And your smile is a thin disguise I thought by now you'd realize There ain't no way to hide your lyin eyes' What was the official name of this song?

Answer: Lyin' Eyes

Eagles is another band that, officially, does not have a definite article in their name. This track hit number two in the US, but only number 28 in the UK.

Useless Information: The band's album, entitled 'Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)', has been listed as the best-selling US album of all time (equal with Michael Jackson's 'Thriller'), selling at least 29 million copies in the US, according to the RIAA Top 100 Album Chart.
6. In 1972, 'A Horse With No Name' was released by a band named after a country. What was this band's name?

Answer: America

From the album 'America', this was America's first and most popular single. It was banned by a number of radio stations in the US, due to alleged drug references, but still reached number one in the US.

Useless Information: The album 'America' was originally released in 1971 without 'A Horse With No Name', which was came out in 1972. After the success of 'A Horse With No Name', the album was re-released with the track included.
7. In 1976, 'Go Your Own Way' reached number 38 in the UK Top 40 and number ten in the US. It was an early release from the album 'Rumours', which came out in 1977. What group released 'Go Your Own Way'?

Answer: Fleetwood Mac

The track 'Go Your Own Way' was written by Lindsey Buckingham about Stevie Nicks, another band member. The pair had a romantic relationship, which had just ended, and the song described their break up.

Useless Information: The album 'Rumours', from which this track was taken, was listed in 2010 as the 14th highest-selling album in the UK (by the British Phonographic Industry). It has been awarded a Diamond award by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for selling over 19 million copies in the US.
8. The Seekers had a hit in 1965 with 'I'll Never Find Another You'. This was their first UK single and reached number one in the UK charts and number four in the US. What nationality were The Seekers?

Answer: Australian

Formed in Melbourne in 1962, The Seekers were the first Australian group to become a major chart success in the UK.

Useless Information: 'I'll Never Find Another You' was the biggest-selling single in the UK for 1965.
9. The American band Lynyrd Skynyrd released 'Freebird' as a single in which year?

Answer: 1974

The track was on the band's first album '(Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd)' which was released in 1973, but was not released as a single until November 1974 when it reached number 19 in the US charts. A live version, released in 1977, reached number 38.

Useless Information: Lynyrd Skynyrd was named after a physical education teacher, Leonard Skinner, at the band's old school. Although they did not 'get-on' too well with him at the school, they eventually settled their differences and Mr. Leonard Skinner was invited to introduce the band at one of their concerts.
10. What would Jim Croce save in a bottle, if he could?

Answer: Time

The year 1973 had a posthumous number one Billboard Hot 100 hit for Jim Croce, 'Time in a Bottle'. It was another song with great lyrics.
