Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Creedence Clearwater Revival were a rock band of the 1960s and '70s who had a string of hits. Which of these songs is NOT one of CCRs releases?

Answer: All Out of Love

All three tracks were on the 1970 album 'Cosmo's Factory'. The band were a bit unlucky in that they never hit the top spot on the US charts, although they hold the unenviable record of having five Number Twos. ('Proud Mary', 'Bad Moon Rising', 'Green River', 'Who'll Stop the Rain?' and 'Looking Out My Back Door'.)

'All Out of Love' was release by Australian band, Air Supply, in 1980.
2. Which of these songs is an instrumental?

Answer: Stranger On The Shore

Acker Bilk had a huge hit in 1962, playing the clarinet. It is very difficult to play one of those, and sing at the same time.

'Bridge Over Troubled Water' by Simon and Garfunkel, 'Smoke on the Water' by Deep Purple, and 'Bat Out of Hell' by Meatloaf all had lyrics.
3. 'Any Dream Will Do' was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice for one of their highly successful musicals. Which one?

Answer: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

The musical related the Biblical tale of Joseph, his brothers and their dealings with Pharaoh. It has been performed on stage many times since its London debut in 1968. 'Any Dream Will Do' was released as a single in 1990, and was a smash hit for Australian Jason Donovan and the cast.
4. The 'Waltz of the Flowers' predates all current music charts, because it premiered in St Petersburg, Russia, in 1892. Which ballet is this well-known piece from?

Answer: 'The Nutcracker', by Petr Tchaikovsky

It is the usual story- girl falls in love with a nutcracker, who mysteriously turns into a handsome prince, and they live happily ever after. I will not bore you with minor details.
5. I like novelty songs and here are four oldies. Can you tell me which four-word song was released by Allen Sherman?

Answer: Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh

'Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh' was based on a letter that Sherman had received from his son, complaining about being 'forced' to go to camp. In 1964 it won a Grammy, so it just goes to show that I am not the only person that enjoys silly songs!

The master of the novelty song, Ray Stevens, released many, including 'The Mississippi Squirrel Revival', 'Harry the Hairy Ape', 'Gitarzan', 'Along Came Jones', 'Ahab the Arab' and 'The Streak'.

'The Purple People Eater' was the best known song by Sheb Wooley.
6. What is the national anthem of Bhutan?

Answer: The Thunder Dragon Kingdom

'Peace to the Amir' is Qatar, 'God Save the Queen' belongs to Great Britain and 'Defenders of the Homeland' is Tunisia's national anthem. The Thunder Dragon, also known as Druk, features on the Bhutanese national flag.
7. Adele set all sorts of chart records in 2011, with the album '21' picking up Grammys, Best Album awards from 'Rolling Stone', 'Billboard' and a host of others. What was the single from '21' that also garnered awards from all over the globe?

Answer: Rolling in the Deep

'Rolling in the Deep' went multi-platinum in many countries, as well as winning 'Billboard' Top Single of 2011. 'Fool That I Am' and 'Many Shades of Black' were both released in 2008.

'Love is a Battlefield' was a 1983 hit for Pat Benatar.
8. 'Shut Up and Drive' was a rather suggestive song, released in 2007. Who sang it?

Answer: Rihanna

Rihanna was born in Barbados in 1988 and was an instant success when she moved to USA at age 16. Her first song, 'Pon de Replay' peaked at Number 2. Her follow-up songs, 'SOS', 'Unfaithful' and 'Umbrella' all did extremely well, too.
9. No music quiz would be complete without mentioning the Beatles. Which of these classics was first to hit the UK charts?

Answer: From Me to You

'From Me to You' was released in 1962 and was the first Number One for the Fab Four. 'A Hard Day's Night' came out in 1964, and the enigmatic 'I Am the Walrus' followed in 1967.

'Back in the USSR' was one of the many hits lifted from the 'White Album', released in 1968.
10. 'Oh, What a Night' was the subtitle of a Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons hit, released in late 1975. It recounted memories of first romance, but what date did that romance happen?

Answer: December, 1963

'December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)' hit the top spot on both sides of the Atlantic, early in 1976. Valli, with his falsetto voice, scored many Top 40 singles, with and without the Seasons.

November, 1975 was the month that the song was recorded, and September, 1945 marked the end of World War II. 'Summer of '69' was a 1984 release for Canadian artist, Bryan Adams.

Other songs of Valli's that would qualify for my quiz include 'Walk Like a Man', 'Big Girls Don't Cry', 'Ain't That a Shame', 'Big Man in Town', all from the 1960s.
