Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. She's "young and sweet, only seventeen" in this quintessential ABBA song. Who is she and what is the name of this song?

Answer: Dancing Queen

"Dancing Queen" was released as the first single from the fourth ABBA studio album, "Arrival." Released in 1976, this disco classic was a number one hit across the globe. Surprisingly, given the catalogue of music released by them, it was the only song by the band to reach number one in the United States. It is arguably the most popular and recognizable ABBA song. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015 and the song has been covered several times and performed in numerous places. There is a "Glee" version, the ABBA tribute band A-Teens released their version as a single in 2000 and the UK group Abracadabra released a version of the song in 1992. The song was used in the brilliant movie "Muriel's Wedding" and included in the musical "Mamma Mia!"

An a capella version of the song was performed in front of the king and queen of Sweden in 1993 by band member Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The band had previously performed the song in 1976 at a pre-wedding party for the monarchs.

The song is on several best of lists and in 2016 British music journalist Tim Jonze wrote a piece called "Why Abba's Dancing Queen is the best pop song ever". "It's true what's sang in the lyrics: 'With a bit of rock music
Everything is fine.'"
2. This upbeat ABBA song starts with the lyrics: "I work all night, I work all day to pay the bills I have to pay Ain't it sad?" What song is this?

Answer: Money, Money, Money

"Money, Money, Money" was released as the second single off the studio album "Arrival." It was released in 1976 and another global hit for the band, reaching number one in Australia, Belgium, France, New Zealand, Mexico and West Germany. The song was originally called "Gypsy Girl" and has very relatable lyrics about working and working but not getting ahead. The song is included in the 1977 movie "ABBA: The Movie" and in the musical "Mamma Mia!"

The song has been covered numerous times, by yet another ABBA tribute band called Abbamania, as well as by The Nolans and Donna Burke. If you're looking for ABBA tribute albums, this song is included on the albums "Abbasalutely" and "Funky ABBA."
3. Lyrics leading to the chorus of this song are "Yes I'm down and feeling blue And I don't know what to do, oh-oh" What Eurovision Song Contest entry is this?

Answer: Ring Ring

"Ring Ring" was released in 1973 as the title track from the debut studio album by ABBA. The song was written in Swedish and reached number one in Sweden. The song was translated into English with the help of Neil Sedaka and Phil Cody and when released in English, reached top ten in several countries including Denmark and Austria.

The band performed the song for the Swedish Eurovision selection competition in the hopes of representing Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest but finished in third and didn't make it. Despite not making it, they dusted themselves off and kept preparing for the future (good thing they didn't get discouraged!) There are actually multiple versions of this song - not only the English and Swedish versions, but also Spanish, German and a mix of Swedish, Spanish and German.
4. "My, my At ________, Napoleon did surrender Oh, yeah And I have met my destiny in quite a similar way" Giving us the name of this ABBA song, where did Napoleon surrender?

Answer: Waterloo

"Waterloo" is my absolute favorite ABBA song. The song was released in 1974 as the first single from their second album (also called "Waterloo"). This song is actually the first to be released under the band name ABBA. It reached number one in several countries, including Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Norway and the United Kingdom. The band sang this song for the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest and ended up winning. In 2005 the song was named the best song in the history of the competition at their fiftieth anniversary celebration.

The song is not included in moving the plot along in the musical "Mamma Mia!" but is instead performed at the end, with audience members encouraged to get up and dance along. The song is used in several movies, including "The Martian" and in one of my favorite movie scenes of all time in "Muriel's Wedding" with Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths. The pair dress up in 70's garb and lip sync and dance along to the song, complete with camera work reminiscent of ABBA videos.
5. This ABBA song and name of a musical featuring their music contains these lyrics: "I've been angry and sad about things that you do I can't count all the times that I've told you we're through" Which song is this?

Answer: Mamma Mia

The song "Mamma Mia" is the opening track and sixth single from the third ABBA studio album. The song was released in 1975 and reached number one in Australia, Ireland, the United Kingdom, West Germany and Switzerland. The history behind the release of this song is pretty interesting. It wasn't originally going to be released as a single and was offered to the band Brotherhood of Man who didn't want to record it. A promotional clip for the song was being played in Australia and was proving to be pretty popular so the Australian record company for ABBA, RCA, asked for it to be released as a single. Polar Music, ABBA's Swedish record label refused however ABBA manager and co-founder of Polar Music, Stig Anderson, agreed and the song stayed at the top of the Australian charts for ten weeks.

The song is also the name of the "Mamma Mia!" musical and film based on the music of ABBA and is included in the Australian movie "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert." Cher has an ABBA cover album called "Dancing Queen" and includes this song on that album.
6. "One of these days Gonna tell him I dream of him every night One of these days Gonna show him I care" These are lyrics from which ABBA song from their album "Arrival"?

Answer: When I Kissed the Teacher

"When I Kissed the Teacher" is the opening track on the 1976 album "Arrival." The song didn't chart too high, reaching top fifty in a number of countries including Ireland and the UK. It was included on the compilation album "More Gold: More Hits." It is also included as a song on the 2018 movie musical "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" which is a sequel to the 2008 movie "Mamma Mia!".

There are so so many ABBA cover bands and tribute albums and this song was included in the 1997 "ExtrABBAganza!" album by the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus.
7. "You'll think you're in paradise And one day you'll find out he wears a disguise" This song is a warning about a playboy. What song is it?

Answer: Angeleyes

"Angeleyes" (also known as "Angel Eyes") is a song from the 1979 sixth studio album by the band, called "Voulez-Vous." In a rare move by the band, the song was released as a double single in the United Kingdom along with the song "Voulez-Vous" and reached number three there.

Interestingly, on the popular British TV show "Juke Box Jury" where a group of jurors rate a song a hit or miss, this song was rated a miss. The jurors who mis-read the popularity of this song were Alan Freeman, Johnny Rotten, Joan Collins and Elaine Paige.

This great song was not successful in the United States at all, only reaching number sixty-four on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is rightly included in a number of ABBA compilation albums including "More ABBA Gold: More ABBA Hits."
8. Popularly listened to annually, what ABBA song contains the lines "May we all have a vision now and then Of a world where every neighbour is a friend"?

Answer: Happy New Year

The song "Happy New Year" had a limited release in December 1980. A song from the album "Super Trouper" with lyrics sung mainly by Agnetha Fältskog, the song is particularly popular in Vietnam. It had a working title of "Daddy Don't Get Drunk on Christmas" and there is a Spanish-language version of the song in addition to the English language version.

The song was re-released in 1999 for the new millennium and has charted in Europe every year from 2007 to 2022 around the New Year. The ABBA tribute band the A-Teens released a cover version of the song in 1999 and changed one of the lyrics from "in the end of eighty-nine" to "in the end of ninety-nine", again to celebrate the new millennium.
9. Which ABBA song has these lines: "I'd heard about you before I wanted to know some more And now I know what they mean, you're a love machine Oh, you make me dizzy"

Answer: Honey, Honey

The song "Honey, Honey" was released in 1974 as the second single from the album "Waterloo." The song was recorded in Swedish as well as English and was the last official recording for the group in Swedish. The song was released in several countries but not the United Kingdom.

It reached top ten in Austria, Canada, Switzerland and Germany. In the UK, a band called Sweet Dreams recorded and released the song in 1974 and hit the top ten with it. The song has also been covered by English singer Tina Charles, Swedish country band Nashville Train and Pakistani sisters Salma and Sabina Agha.

The song is also included on the tribute albums "Abbasalutely", "Spelar ABBA", and "ABBA: A Tribute - The 25th Anniversary Celebration" by former ABBA engineer Michael B. Tretow.
10. This ABBA song starts with the lines "If you change your mind I'm the first in line" What song from "ABBA: The Album" is this?

Answer: Take a Chance On Me

"Take a Chance On Me" was released in 1978 as the second single from the studio album "ABBA: The Album." The two female singers Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad share the vocals on this song. The song reached number one in Austria, Ireland, Belgium and the United Kingdom and reached number three in the United States.

This song was the seventh number one single in the United Kingdom and the last song of theirs to reach number one in the 1970s in the UK. With this song, the band became the act with the most number one singles on the charts in the UK during the 1970s.

In 1992 English pop group Erasure released an EP called "Abba-esque" and included a cover of this song on that record.
