Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "In my life, there's been heartache and pain. I don't know if I can face it again. Can't stop now, I've travelled so far to change this lonely life" are the words that lead into the chorus of what 1980s power ballad?

Answer: "I Want to Know What Love Is" by Foreigner

From the 1984 album "Agent Provocateur", "I Want to Know What Love Is" was a number one single in both the US and the UK in early 1985. It was voted number 476 on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time". Foreigner's other big hit was 1981's "Waiting for a Girl Like You".
2. "No one knows what it's like to be hated, to be fated, to telling only lies. But my dreams they aren't as empty as my conscience seems to be" are words that belong to what song?

Answer: "Behind Blue Eyes" - The Who

"Behind Blue Eyes" was originally written by Pete Townshend for his "Lifehouse" project (a sci-fi album intended as a follow-up to "Tommy"). The song appeared instead on 1971's "Who's Next", a traditional rock album. The song has been covered many times, including a fairly hideous 2003 version recorded by Limp Bizkit for the movie "Gothika".
3. "I think of all the education that I missed, but then my homework was never quite like this! I got it bad, so bad..." is the chorus to which of these songs?

Answer: "Hot for Teacher" by Van Halen

The song comes from the 1984 album, called "1984" and is most recognizable for the long drum intro, as well as Eddie Van Halen's guitar solo. The music video was nearly banned due to the sexually suggestive and inappropriate lyrics, as well as the fact that the video featured a young female teacher stripping.
4. "People always told me, be careful what you do and don't go around breaking young girls' hearts. And Mama always told me, be careful who you love and be careful what you do 'cause the lie becomes the truth" are lyrics in which pop tune?

Answer: "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson

"Billie Jean" was a single released from the wildly popular "Thriller"(1983) album. The lyrics refer to a woman who claimed that Jackson was the father of her child. The song was number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, as well as the American R&B chart.

The music video for "Billie Jean" featured many of Michael Jackson's famous characteristics: a black fedora, black jacket and single white-sequined glove, as well as the performance of the 'moonwalk'.
5. "Maybe I'm a girl and maybe I'm a lonely girl who's in the middle of something that she doesn't really understand. Maybe I'm a girl and maybe you're the only man who could ever help me. Baby won't you help me understand?" are lyrics to what cover song?

Answer: "Maybe I'm Amazed" by Jem

Jem, a singer-songwriter from Wales, covered the Paul McCartney song in 2004, and had it featured in the hit TV series "The O.C.". The song was originally written by McCartney in 1969 for his wife Linda, whom he credited with helping him through the difficult time of the Beatles' break-up. It first appeared on the 1970 album "McCartney".
6. "Don't the hours grow shorter as the days go by. Never get to stop and open our eyes. One minute you're waiting for the sky to fall, and next you're dazzled by the beauty of it all" are the opening lines of which song?

Answer: "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" by Barenaked Ladies

"Lovers in a Dangerous Time" is another cover song; the original version was done by Bruce Cockburn in 1984. The Barenaked Ladies recorded it for the Cockburn tribute album "Kick At the Darkness" in 1991. It became BNL's first Top-40 hit, reaching number 16 on Canadian charts in February 1992.
7. "'It's a cold day for September' was all I thought to say when I saw you on the street the other day. I knew something changed between us, all the talk we made was small. But what do you say to someone when they've heard you say it all?" are lyrics that belong to which of these tunes?

Answer: "How Did We Get From Saying 'I Love You'" by Great Big Sea

Great Big Sea is a folk-rock band from Newfoundland, Canada. "How Did We Get From Saying 'I Love You' (to 'I'll See You Around Some Day')" was a 1998 single from the album "Play". It reached number 23 on Canadian charts.
8. "Dear Lou, We learned so much. I realize we won't be able to talk for some time, and I understand that as I do you. The long distance thing was the hardest and we did as well as we could. We were together during a very tumultuous time in our lives. I will always have your back and be curious about you, about your career, your whereabouts" is my favourite verse in which song?

Answer: "Unsent" by Alanis Morissette

All the verses of the songs are 'letters' that Alanis has written to former lovers. The letter to Lou is the last verse of the song. Other letters were intended for Matthew, Jonathon, Terrance and Marcus. It is said that the original version of the song included more letters, with the boys' real names (including Matthews, instead of Matthew, meaning Dave Matthews, Alanis' former boyfriend). "Unsent" is off of the 1998 album "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" and did not perform as well on the charts as her previous singles had.
9. "I don't ever want to feel like I did that day. Take me to the place I love, take me all away" is the chorus to which of these songs?

Answer: "Under the Bridge" by Red Hot Chili Peppers

Released a single in 1992 from the album "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", "Under the Bridge" was a different sound than previous RHCP songs. It was written by front man Anthony Kiedis when he was feeling low. He had been struggling with sobriety, and the lyrics that speak of drug abuse reflect this.

This song is also said to be partly about Kiedis' continued feelings of sadness over former band mate Hillel Slovak, who had died of a drug overdose just a couple years earlier.
10. "On a long and lonesome highway, east of Omaha, you can listen to the engine moaning out its one line song. You can think about a woman, or the girl you knew the night before, but your thoughts will soon be wandering the way they always do" are lyrics that belong to which song?

Answer: "Turn the Page" by Bob Seger

Bob Seger first released the song in 1973, from the "Back in '72" album. The song was written in a hotel room in Wisconsin, and the lyrics are about the highs and lows of a musician's life on the road. The most well-known cover version of the song is Metallica's 1998 version, from their album "Garage, Inc".

The music video for Metallica's version takes a different message from the lyrics; it is about a prostitute trying to support herself and her child.
